Is Grid FM28 a hard one to get?

Hi, I'm not familiar with that part of the country but I could finish 3 states by getting that grid. Is this one that is active? Looks like I missed it during last year's APE. 73, Dave AK7DB

Some grids are rarer than others, but it depends on which part of U.S. you live in as well propagation/band conditions. For us in the Midwest East coast grids are pretty easy, but stuff in Western half is much more difficult. Of course, working those grids all depends on when they are on the air and if your schedule meets that of the grid you're seeking. Pretty much a crap shot. One rare one for me is EM91 is GA, I have a friend who lives on Jekyl Is. (GA) and I've asked him to get on the air so I can get his grid, but he's retired and seems to busy to get on the air, hi !, hi ! Also, have another local ham who summers in EN65, but he doesn't operate PSK31. Many grids have little or no psk31 activity; so we have to rely on good people like N7WE & W7RIV among others to activate rare grids. So, it's mostly a case of catch as catch can. Jerry n9avy

Here in NV many of the grids have more bighorn sheep and coyotes then people so they're tough to get. I just wondered if FM28 was in an area that was not well populated (or only accessible at low tide).
Most of the fun of ham radio for me is "casting out the CQ line" and seeing what you can catch. Dave AK7DB

Yup, kinda figured that many grids out West have more critters than people. Some are probably government land which is probably posted "no trespassing" (Area 51). Some is also in mountains or deserts which often has little or no population. Guess I'm like you in that I call CQ and am always surprised at whoever answers... just like fishing ! When I work someone for the second time, it's like meeting up with an old friend. Jerry n9avy

I agree about unpopulated grids. Also need to factor in the Black Holes of which there appear to be a few. In fact, at least one award program (www.gapawards.com) has a special category for "wet" grids that don't contain any land.

P.S. For those that don't recognize GAPA, it's the renamed awards that were formerly known as TARA's grid and prefix awards (which actually, even longer ago, started out as PODXS and 070 awards).

Barry - Thanks for reminding me--I forgot about that. I'm still looking for hole 13 because my one QSO with that area (the wet grid BE05) was prior to the GOLF starting date.
