Miles per Watt
John Kirby
MPW...E MilesPerWatt/Endorsement Along with this most recent topic.../qrp /log /amp /ant /pwr /etc I hear the cry for a PODXS endorsement "MPW" Surely with as much log checking capability this group already have.... Something like "my six place grid square versus your six place grid" with respect to "my power versus your power" WOULD COULD produce a number related to ?fer long per fort night squared? OR (Miles Per Watt)... HI HI John N3AAZ # 1337 |

That's a really interesting one to have a leader board for! Unfortunately, i can't provide a report right now .. The checker only loads certain fields form the ADIF logs into the database. Currently I have GRIDSQUARE (worked) and RX_PWR and TX_PWR loading into the checker database... But not the DISTANCE, LAT, or LON fields; and not the MY_GRIDSQUARE, MY_LAT, or MY_LON fields; Need a combination of those to get distance. So bottom line is that currently I cannot query the checker database for distance. I'll need to update it to read in some more fields; but that will only apply to uploads going forward (so still won't be able to query past logs). Not sure of a timeframe -- should be quick once i get to it -- that's the tricky part ;) .. Maybe i'll do an automatic leader board like 24x7/365 or LONP, so we can see what the "best" (wrt MPW) QSO's are. --david KJ4IZW On Sat, Feb 27, 2016 at 8:32 AM, n3aaz_qrp_1@... I am not to sure TX PWR and RX PWR would work as I can never be totally sure what my RX PWR really is. I can give you my TX PWR as well as DISTANCE which should make the calculation relatively easier. RX_PWR would be useful to note 2x QRP; but otherwise you're right that it's not part of MPW calculation .. And maybe it should be KPW, not MPW, to use the "real" unit system :) [side note: ADIF's field is kilometers by definition] --david KJ4IZW On Sat, Feb 27, 2016 at 3:40 PM, boat.anchor@... Either stick to SI units (km/w) or if you want American Customary units, by all means go with mile/horsepower. Or perhaps furlong/horsepower? Personally I’d go with km/w since both of those are what’s in the ADIF spec, but I confess that furlong/horsepower has a certain quaint eccentricity I admire. -p KG7STV

We use furlong/horsepower at W6NAG …

Yeah, ask NASA how mixing measurement systems went! I prefer during
QSO's outside of the US using kilometers.

I spent 3yrs in outback Australia and never did get used to seeing outboard engines rated in Watts. That's not funny! Though if you want to count that way, my QSOs with Duncan ZL3JT using my Small Wonders Lab PSK20 (at 3 watts) and the attic dipole would run at over 482 MILLION cm/W. Steve, Hear Hear! Jerry. I have four contacts with my Aussie friends using a Small Wonder Labs transceiver on 20m running 1.5W into a BB7V up 25 ft.(yep the very same radio that I use for everything else) Oh yeah, two of those contacts were confirmed long path. Do the math for me. How many cm's is that? I just smoked my calculator! Still doin QRP on PSK. Git along there little doggies! The Small Wonder Labs xceiver sounds so interesting and yet is apparently no longer available. Are there currently available alternatives?

Paul, Unfortunately not unless you are able to snag one on the usual ham sites, hamfest or Ebay. They are rarer than hens teeth to find now. I think that there would be a great market for it if someone would pick up the line. I know I would be in. For me there is nothing like the feeling of being able to communicate worldwide with something that you built. Joe KA1PPV #1482 On Monday, February 29, 2016 12:51 PM, "Paul Butzi kg7stv@... About the time that the Small Wonders PSK Series went out of production, I had email exchanges with Dave Benson as I was mightly interested in these kits. That back and forth is now nicely summarized with his webpage at smallwonderlabs.qrpradio.org "Are you interested in taking over the PSK-Series?" I think Dave made the right decision...the PSK Series time was past.
What was and is a fabulous product has become (like many other ham items - The IMD Meter by kk7uq for example) the victim of the march of technology and parts obsolesence. If you can find one (or even better - a complete but unassembeld kit!) buy it. I do see them for sale very occasionally on the ham classified sites but have never managed to snag one. A tip of the hat to Dave Benson K1SWL and the "Small Wonders" that came out of his lab! Rick - N7WE - #1602 |
