As a left-coaster in these band conditions, all I could do when I read this was smile. :-)

DX lately has been east of the Mississippi for us. With a beam at 50ft.

It's gotta get better soon, right? Right?.....

Steve W3HF

You guys still have the China Clipper, VK, and WOZ ones available. They're as difficult for us easterners as the European ones are for you.

(Not a complaint, just an observation.)

And yes, I hope propagation gets better soon.

Well being a right coaster I would have to say I disagree. We have WALC
but I do not see WARC. You have Alaska, no counterpart on the right
side. Left siders have VK, WAOZ, Hawaii and China Clipper, us righties
have benelux, Hungary, Switzerland, UK and now Baltic. Most of the
others we seem to be equally accessible. The way I see it the lefties
have 1 over us righties.

Ill give you AK, HI and China.

But VK and WAOZ is not that easy from up here in the Pacific Northwest. Over the last 4 years

The DX awards for the last 3 -4 years have been pretty much EU centric. And EU is darned near impossible right now.
Hungary (HA) and Switzerland (HB)this year
EA, D, I, G, SV, UA, SP. in previous years.

ok, i'll bite (numbers are fun!) ... w/two caveats:

1) More the better!

2) "Statistics can be used to prove anything .... and 40% of people know
that" (Homer Simpson)

short answer: West coast has the "advantage" by a score of 12-8.

Long answer ...

First I looked at the callsigns, and assumed (no, it's not perfect, but
should be good enough):
those starting with a A,K,N,W were US stations
the call area is the physical call area
Taking the LONP list from 5/23 (right before TDW), with that logic I get:
151 (19%) West Coast (Areas 6,7)
493 (62%) East Coast (Areas 1,2,3,4,8,9)

That's a East-to-West ratio of 3.3:1 ... therefore if all things are even,
we'd expect, for any given award, the ratio of East-to-West to be the same.
If it's less, then West is "favored". If it's more, then East is
"favored".

==> I found that (as of 6/21), West has the advantage in 12 awards, while
East only 8.

Here are the E:W ratios per Endorsement:

EAST-Friendly:
9.5 Benelux
7.8 UK
6.0 Central-America
5.0 TRI-WARC
4.8 QCWA
4.2 88 Tri-Band
3.8 QRP
3.4 Maple Leaf
WEST-Friendly:
0.3 China Clipper
0.7 Wrk'd All Oz
1.1 VK
1.9 Aloha
1.9 WALC-NA
2.1 Alaska
2.1 Lower 48
2.7 PSK GOLF
2.8 QRP Tri-Band
2.9 K3VOA
3.0 WAC
3.2 PSK31 Achiever

I can only go by what's on the standings page:
http://www.podxs070.com/endorsement-standings
The past DX awards aren't on there anymore ..

For 2010, both HA & HB have been earned by only EB3JT, OH2-612, NO8R, which
is 1 east-coast (if you count western Michigan), and 0 west-coast, which
means there's not info info/sample-size to create a ratio to apply the
comparison to he E-W membership ratio .... Which is why they were left off.

One could argue (see caveat #2) that the DX awards are 2 per year, so that
is (for any specific year) still a score of 12-10 for West.
(also note I'm on the east coast)

ok, i'll bite (numbers are fun!) ... w/two caveats:
1) More the
better!
2) "Statistics can be used to prove anything .... and 40% of
people know
that" (Homer Simpson)

short answer: West coast
has the "advantage" by a score of 12-8.
Long answer ...

First I
looked at the callsigns, and assumed (no, it's not perfect, but
should be
good enough):
those starting with a A,K,N,W were US
stations
the call area is the physical call area
Taking the LONP
list from 5/23 (right before TDW), with that logic I get:
151 (19%)
West Coast (Areas 6,7)
493 (62%) East Coast (Areas
1,2,3,4,8,9)
That's a East-to-West ratio of 3.3:1 ... therefore if all
things are even,
we'd expect, for any given award, the ratio of East-to-West
to be the same.
If it's less, then West is "favored". If it's more,
then East is
"favored".

==> I found that (as of 6/21), West has the
advantage in 12 awards, while
East only 8.

Here are the E:W ratios per
Endorsement:
EAST-Friendly:
9.5 Benelux
7.8 UK
6.0
Central-America
5.0 TRI-WARC
4.8 QCWA
4.2 88 Tri-Band
3.8 QRP
3.4

WEST-Friendly:
0.3 China Clipper
0.7 Wrk'd All Oz
1.1
VK
1.9 Aloha
1.9 WALC-NA
2.1 Alaska
2.1 Lower 48
2.7 PSK

2.8 QRP Tri-Band
2.9 K3VOA
3.0 WAC
3.2 PSK31 Achiever

Over the last 4 years

The DX awards for the last 3
-4 years have been pretty much EU centric. And
EU is darned near
impossible right now.
Hungary (HA) and Switzerland (HB)this year

EA, D, I, G, SV, UA, SP. in previous years.

Only ones I have
even seen close was JA and PY. but have never seen 20

those two.

Well being a right coaster I would have to say
I disagree. We have WALC
but
I do not see WARC. You have
Alaska, no counterpart on the right
side. Left
siders have
VK, WAOZ, Hawaii and China Clipper, us righties
have benelux,

Hungary, Switzerland, UK and now Baltic. Most of the
others we seem
to be
equally accessible. The way I see it the lefties
have
1 over us
righties.

151 (19%) West Coast (Areas 6,7)
493 (62%) East Coast (Areas 1,2,3,4,8,9)

Only ones I have even seen close was JA and PY. but have never seen 20

Steve is absolutely correct!
Our observations are based on present as well as recent propagation conditions.
Old Timers, remember the last cycle and the one before that?
Remember 20 meters open world wide 24 hours a day? Not everyday, but often enough.
Remember 15 meters open to EU, AF & JA for at least 12 hours a day?
Remember 10 meters open to EU, AF & JA every afternoon?
Remember the long path openings on 40 meters to AF & Indian Ocean?
Remember listening to JA's ragchew with each other all night on 40 & 80 meters?
Remember the openings to UA?, UN, UR etc. on 20 meters? (I think that's where "horse racing" on CW was invented)
I've got 21 paper log books full of these contacts.
Patience is the key.
Just my $.02 contribution.

You guys still have the China Clipper, VK, and WOZ ones available. They're as difficult for us easterners as the European ones are for you.

(Not a complaint, just an observation.)

And yes, I hope propagation gets better soon.

David -

Nice analysis. But I'll "confess" that the numbers are a little more skewed than this shows, at least for this one station.

My call shows up under all of the endorsements you list. But not all of them were earned from 3-land. 070 "old-timers" may remember that I spent a considerable amount of time operating from California as W3HF/6 while on business trips. For GOLF, I'm listed separately as both W3HF (from PA) and W3HF/6 (from CA); hopefully you treated those separately and appropriately. But for all of the other endorsements (including LONP), I'm just W3HF regardless of where it was earned.

So here's my version:

All of the endorsements you list as "East-friendly" were earned completely (or predominantly) from the East coast.

China Clipper and WOZ were predominantly West coast. (I've never heard, let alone worked, either Taiwan or Philippines from PA.) I think I may qualify for VK based on East coast contacts, but I know it was initially earned from the West coast. The rest of the "West-friendly" were earned from the East coast.

Yup...But I have to add that I worked most of my endorsements from the time in GA. My time in NM and now TX have garnered very few...still waiting for Taiwan/VK1 &7 and of course the ever elusive HOLE 13

David -

Nice analysis. But I'll "confess" that the numbers are a little more skewed
than this shows, at least for this one station.

My call shows up under all of the endorsements you list. But not all of them
were earned from 3-land. 070 "old-timers" may remember that I spent a
considerable amount of time operating from California as W3HF/6 while on
business trips. For GOLF, I'm listed separately as both W3HF (from PA) and
W3HF/6 (from CA); hopefully you treated those separately and appropriately.
But for all of the other endorsements (including LONP), I'm just W3HF
regardless of where it was earned.

So here's my version:

All of the endorsements you list as "East-friendly" were earned completely
(or predominantly) from the East coast.

China Clipper and WOZ were predominantly West coast. (I've never heard, let
alone worked, either Taiwan or Philippines from PA.) I think I may qualify
for VK based on East coast contacts, but I know it was initially earned from
the West coast. The rest of the "West-friendly" were earned from the East
coast.

Endorsement archives are at <http://mysite.verizon.net/jbudzowski/070_end_arc1.htm> . Guess I could put out an OHIO DX Special endorsement for the leftcoasters, but what's the challenge in that?? Jay N3DQU

The past DX awards aren't on there anymore ..

For 2010, both HA & HB have been earned by only EB3JT, OH2-612, NO8R, which
is 1 east-coast (if you count western Michigan), and 0 west-coast, which
means there's not info info/sample-size to create a ratio to apply the
comparison to he E-W membership ratio .... Which is why they were left off.

One could argue (see caveat #2) that the DX awards are 2 per year, so that
is (for any specific year) still a score of 12-10 for West.
(also note I'm on the east coast)

ok, i'll bite (numbers are fun!) ... w/two caveats:
1) More the
better!
2) "Statistics can be used to prove anything .... and 40% of
people know
that" (Homer Simpson)

short answer: West coast
has the "advantage" by a score of 12-8.
Long answer ...

First I
looked at the callsigns, and assumed (no, it's not perfect, but
should be
good enough):
those starting with a A,K,N,W were US
stations
the call area is the physical call area
Taking the LONP
list from 5/23 (right before TDW), with that logic I get:
151 (19%)
West Coast (Areas 6,7)
493 (62%) East Coast (Areas
1,2,3,4,8,9)
That's a East-to-West ratio of 3.3:1 ... therefore if all
things are even,
we'd expect, for any given award, the ratio of East-to-West
to be the same.
If it's less, then West is "favored". If it's more,
then East is
"favored".

==> I found that (as of 6/21), West has the
advantage in 12 awards, while
East only 8.

Here are the E:W ratios per
Endorsement:
EAST-Friendly:
9.5 Benelux
7.8 UK
6.0
Central-America
5.0 TRI-WARC
4.8 QCWA
4.2 88 Tri-Band
3.8 QRP

1.9 WALC-NA
2.1 Alaska
2.1 Lower 48

The DX awards for the last 3

EA, D, I, G, SV, UA, SP. in previous years.

Well being a right coaster I would have to say
I disagree. We have WALC
but
I do not see WARC. You have
Alaska, no counterpart on the right
side. Left
siders have
VK, WAOZ, Hawaii and China Clipper, us righties
have benelux,

Hungary, Switzerland, UK and now Baltic. Most of the
others we seem
to be
equally accessible. The way I see it the lefties
have
1 over us
righties.

Remember 20 meters open world wide 24 hours a day? Not everyday, but often enough.
Visit www.qrz.com/db/ua6jd and in middle scroll box read about
propogation on 20 meters in mid-70 years.
In that years I was a young guy with big ambitions and we using very
seldom at that time 6 el YAGI .
My ex- call was UA6JAD and brother's call was UA6JWW and our radio
was ON 24 hours per day and US stations was in log each hour.
Never back that nice days!

Late to this party - I was on vacation last week.

I've only been on PSK since the end of February and have 10 ZLs and 13 VKs since then. They seem to show up most evenings at about 10pm Pacific time here in Woodinville WA.

I'm using a well hidden Butternut vertical antenna here - my brag isn't joking when it says I'm warming earthworms!

The picture is looking approximately southwest. I'm on the west side of a ridge that runs approximately north-south so the antenna seems to do well over the Pacific. I have nights where I'll see no east coast, but still the odd VK and ZL on 20m.

I need to go and run some real radials amongst the ivy and get rid of the counterpoise kit...

Orin.

Ill give you AK, HI and China.

But VK and WAOZ is not that easy from up here in the Pacific Northwest. Over the last 4 years
in these horrid band condx Ive worked maybe 10-12 VK/ZL.

The DX awards for the last 3 -4 years have been pretty much EU centric. And EU is darned near impossible right now.
Hungary (HA) and Switzerland (HB)this year
EA, D, I, G, SV, UA, SP. in previous years.

Only ones I have even seen close was JA and PY. but have never seen 20 stations from those two.
