Steve Ford wrote an article about that a few months ago in QST, pretty interesting.  60 meters seems to open more now also.

I can’t believe I missed the opportunity to run an APE for this. It never occurred to me with all the preparations for the eclipse. :-(

Maybe for the 2024 one…

Mike,

We won't mark a "black spot" against you for it, even though we were "left in the dark" about it.

Glad that you had a great experience. It definitely got dimmer here in CT but nothing like what you and others experienced. It must have been truly awesome.

I busied my self with making contacts for the HamSci project but did step out to observe the "not so totality" here.

Did you ever wonder how the moon just happened to be the correct size to make this all possible?
What a plan!

We observed the solar eclipse at the Vineyard Mountain Swim Club in Corvallis, OR.

As totality approached, there was a noticeable drop in the temperature.  The breeze picked up, which we were told was typical for evening time.  It was the equivalent of sunset, but not total darkness.

Totality was an amazing experience.  For 1 minute 49 seconds we could observe the eclipsed sun and the sun's corona without our eclipse glasses.   It was an incredible and amazing sight.

As the moon moved from in front the sun, we could see shimmering shadows of the sun's corona cast on the concrete surrounding the pool.   I didn't expect that at all.  What an experience - Wow!!

It was pretty amazing. I got some pretty good pictures and met some great
people. I even remembered to actually look up at totality in between taking
all the pictures with the telescope. :-)

The strangest thing for me was the lighting. Very hard to describe what it
looked like. The closest comparison I can make is the orangeish tint from
street lamps or looking through blu-blocker glasses.

2017 KC9UR Pontoon Portable APE

v32hoosier@...

Yahoo decided to bury the announcement I posted yesterday into an old thread from years past, so I'm re-posting it:

The KC9UR Pontoon Portable APE has been spotted thrashing about northeast Indiana preparing to get on the air this Friday afternoon, Aug 25th, and continuing through Sunday morning, Aug 27th.  Stan (W9SMR) and I are looking forward to our 5th consecutive APE from beautiful Round Lake, and to reconnecting with hunters of years past as well as working as many new PSKers as possible (last year's contact total exceeded 200).  As in previous years, we're offering a custom QSL card and also a nice certificate to the persistent hunters who work us on three or more bands.  We will be operating two stations on 80 thru 6 meters, propagation permitting.  We'll post updates to this forum when we get on the air.

Happy hunting!
Stan (W9SMR) and Bob (KC9UR)
