Re: 160m

SWR is 13 !!!!   That's bad and will cause overheating of finals.  SWR should be 2.1:1 at the most.  Mine typically stays around 1.5 or less.  Hope you're just reading your meter wrong.

Can we try this evening ???

Jerry, if you want to try 160m, text me on my phone 571-225-6180 a time/place. Worth a shot. My SWR at 1807 is actually less than 13 -- which is my normal levels on my random horizontal loop thing.
I'm calling cq now for what it is worth.

KG5OIB is John Hendry.

Congrats John!  (BTW are you related to David Hendry, who taught electronics at NCTC for years, before his passing?)

Be on the lookout for David, VE7BGD, 070 #1881, of Delta, BC who needs only these 3 dates in March to complete his 366 Award:

March 19, 20, and 21

Of our 2,829 members, only 45 have OFFICIALLY achieved 366.

However, according to uploads made since the first of the year, 2021, the following have logged the necessary QSO’s to qualify for the 366 Award:

F8BFU, K4ARE, K5KHK, KC4OBB, KE0GHU, WB8YXF, WM4B, KG5OIB

Needing only a single date for 366 are: M5PLY (Feb. 19), R6KEE (Dec. 15) and SA7BXU (Oct. 30)

Congrats to all on your persistence in pursuing and achieving this cherisher award.

If you see VE7BGD on the air, be sure to give him a call and make his DAY. I am sure there are many more who need March dates, also. Even if you have worked a fellow member before, please answer that CQ. Let’s make 366 happen for as many as you can.

To see what dates you need, upload your full log and check the "Online Endorsement Checker". In the "In Progress" section, click on "Target" for the 360 category and a list of needed dates will show. If you have a problem seeing that, please just let me know.

160m

Jerry N9AVY

After all the antenna troubles I've had this Winter, think luck has changed.  Was messing around with tuning up on 80m and it was a snap; so I went to 1807 and tried to tune up there and it worked like magic !   Called CQ  a couple times, but no takers.

Pretty good week so far worked some DX on 20m, a new LONP or 2 and a bunch of stateside stations. Even good old LoTW is mysteriously working from N3FJP.  Wow !  Guess I'm ready for St. Pat's contest  !!!

BTW, heard an HS (Thailand)  station on 20m PSK this morning, he had decent signal, but think he had lots of QRM cause he never answered.

St. Paddy's Day - Deja Vu...All over again

Ahem!...Who says the West Coast can't win a contest?
Back in the day, our very good & active member, and friend, Karen, W4KRN, 070-215, was the "High Sheriff" of the St. Paddy's Day Operating Event/Contest.
Along with her generous donation of time & just being a good natured fellow 070 member, she volunteered to custom make an award for the Top Dawg.
Ha!...The West Coast can't win a contest??
I'm going to give it my best shot again this year.
On this day in 2011, the "Observed SFI" was 101.1.
At the moment it's 75.
E'nuf said about the "big gray cloud" called propagation.
Looking for everybody in the Operating Event/Contest.

Thank you for the heads up...
It was on my calendar, but I am surprised the event does not show on https://www.contestcalendar.com/weeklycont.php  ??

I plan on being on QRP NR3I S&P although I had no luck with QRP the previous contest.

Never heard of BOTA .   However, heard many years ago about working from all the rest areas along the Interstates... not sure if that ever got off the ground.

Rechecking log

Jerry N9AVY

Spent some time going thru logs from 2019 & 2020 which resulted in picking up another LONP and another Grid (LA) confirmed. Guess it pays to check the log a bit more thoroughly.

Right now 20m and other bands are kind of crummy. Worked a station in ID and another in MA during snowstorm here.  While chatting with ID station my SWR was bouncing all over from 1:1 up to almost 2:1... wonder if something is loose up on tower ???  Haven't been up there in years, but have always been suspicious of balun in ceramic case. Will just have to live with it I guess,,,

So where's this Cycle 25 everyone is crowing about ???   Traffic on reflector has been light lately...hope it picks up with St. Pat's contest.

Discone active in Tucson this Wednesday

Mike W4BZM

Per a QSO with AE7W tonight, some of the hams in Tucson will activate the discone antenna at the Titan Missile Museum this Wednesday.  They intend to use call sign WB7RCW on 14.235 MHz, starting at 1000 MST/PDT, which if my math is correct works out to 1700 UTC.  If you've never worked that huge antenna before, try it.  The signal quality is amazing!

The Ø7Ø Club St Patrick’s Day Contest is just 1 week away -

Saturday, March 20 - 0000 UTC – 2359 UTC

This is a 1 day, 24 Hour event – Friday evening and Saturday in US.

Work as many stations as possible in the allotted time using PSK31 mode only.

Work each station once per band. (Same station, same band, is a dupe!)

Open to all licensed radio amateurs. Using 160M thru 6M (No WARC Bands).

4 Power Categories:

QRP < 5 W
Low < 25 W
Medium < 50 W
High < 100 W (See Rules)

Exchange:
Call sign, state/province/country (SPC). eg: “W9SMR  FL”

Call“CQ 070 St Pat’s Contest”

BONUS POINTS: Spell “Erin Go Bragh” using the first letter in the call suffix. See Contest Rules for details.

For Rules and detailsClick Here:  Rules-St Pat's Contest

All entry logs
must be received within 1 week after the event ends. A Special Upload Link will be available on the PODXS 070 Webpage when the contest starts.

With 6 bands to choose from, you can optimize your luck with propagation. It is helpful to post your intentions to QSY on the Reflector. Also, be sure to use PSKReporter and to Spot calls seen. Go ahead and Self-Spot! Let folks know you are listening. CALL CQ!!

With the added challenge of spelling “Erin Go Bragh”, your progress on the Work The World (WTW) Endorsement is enhanced. And new members will make great strides on the LONP!!

Let’s see if you are one of the Lucky Irish. Go for that Pot ‘O Gold!
