Corvallis, OR - the predicted 'carmegedeon' for central Oregon did not occur.

The solar eclipse at totality was just amazing!

Off now for a few days on the McKenzie River before returning to San Jose ...

Well I chose to travel 6 hours from Waterford WI to Waterloo, IL to experience the Great American eclipse and it was awesome..Dont miss the next one in 2024...But the ride home took a little longer, about 11 hours to return home as the freeways were gridlocked from St Louis to Bloomington.
What a mess. At any rate..missed the 8/21 QSO..so i'll have to wait another year.

Howdy, sports fans!

Due to many circumstances beyond John's control and my control, we haven't gotten the current mailing out yet. OK, so some of the circumstances were within my control, but not all of them. :-P

We will combine the existing, late mailing with the September mailing.  The cut-off date for stickers to be included in this mailing will be 31 August, 2017.  The mailing will commence about mid-month in September.

I'm sorry that they mailing hasn't gone out already, but things have been really hectic for the both of us.  Keep an eye on your mailbox starting mid-September.

There's other exciting things afoot - stay tuned to your email!

Oh, Great APE Thrasher !!

With the pipeline you've burned to NE Indiana lately, you should have no trouble earning a 6 Band "Bwana" Certificate this year.

I know you already have an empty frame hanging on the shack wall for your 5th Annual APE Hunter Certificate.

We'll be on the lookout for you.

Re: W5MMW/VE3 Portable Operation (APE) August 19-26

W5MMW Matt Manjos

:) Thanks! I've been surprised how well it's actually worked out being forced into QRP. I am used to operating with a buddipole from a porch in the middle of a bunch of concrete apartment buildings, so being out in the open with an OCFD strung up at about 50 feet is a huge improvement.

Worked a good number during the SEQP today. Going to try to get on the air each day this week.

On the bright side, RX is still fine on the radio and at least I'm not totally dead in the water. Just have to make a warranty case with icom once I get back.

Thanks again for the report!

Hey Matt,

So it won't go over 7 watts?  I don't see the problem.  That's about 5 db better that me.
Seriously though I know full well how frustrating it is when your equipment lets you down at a critical time.  The bright side is that I have seen your signal several times but the conditions here have been absolutely awful on 20m so I haven't gotten through yet but I will keep trying.  I would like to capture at least one APE this season.  I have seen several running around in the RF jungle but no luck yet.

Hi Steve,

No don't live in a cave but I have found myself in the "dog house" a couple of times though.

I am registered and ready to go.
Hope to see you OTA.

Hi!

There’s a Solar Eclipse tomorrow (just in case you have been living in a cave for the past few months and the only outside world contact you get is the 070 group email).

Along with the Solar Eclipse is a HamSCI project to try and characterize propagation impacts from the eclipse. They are sponsoring a Solar Eclipse QSO Party (SEQP) tomorrow from 1600 UTC until 2200 UTC and are trying to get as many hams as possible active on CW, Digital and Phone. My understanding is that based on the science they are trying to conduct, that CW and digital modes would be preferable, but SSB also would also help.

If you are around tomorrow, Monday August 21 and can put in some time, please consider participating. Doesn’t matter if you are in the path of the full eclipse, or if you are somewhere that’ll only get partially occluded (like us, 70%). IF YOU CAN'T BE AROUND, YOU CAN STILL PARTICIPATE. Pick a band (6, 10, 15, 20, 40, 80, 160), and leave your PSK31 software running, and SPOT received signals on that band. You’ll report received stations to PSKinfo and HamSCI will be looking at that data to determine propagation.

I'm planning on operating from home QTH in FN33 all day along along with my son KC1GDW (operating as multi operator running under my callsign, W1HS) and we will be operating PSK31 on all bands, as well as running WSPR and Phone.

More info about the SEQP can be found at http://www.hamsci.org/seqp-rules

And remember, if you plan on looking at the eclipse, you can do so twice (once with each remaining good eye) without appropriate solar glasses (bad idea, don’t try), or you can get a pair of ISO 12312-2 certified glasses and look at it again and again, as well as look at other things afterwards too!

Re: W5MMW/VE3 Portable Operation (APE) August 19-26

W5MMW Matt Manjos

Some bad news... it seems the finals on my almost brand new IC-7200 are toast. Only my second time taking it out since picking it up in June and it refuses to transmit above 8 or so watts :( The rig jumps from <1.1 SWR to ∞ and powers down if I tease the power past 8W. I get the same symptoms with 3 different known-working antenna setups, on multiple bands.

The silver lining is that it seems to be functional if I keep it below 7W. So it looks like I'll be working QRP for the rest of my APE plans (as long as the rig holds up).

Hoping to be on the air most of the day tomorrow (and during the SEQP). Not sure if the radio is actually sending 7W, but that's what it will be set to, going into either a buddipole or a OCFD depending on the band.

Cheers - 73

Just wanted to announce my plans to operate an August PSK Expedition while portable from Renfrew, Ontario, Canada.

I will be on the air as W5MMW/VE3 from grid FN15 starting Saturday, August 19th and running until Saturday, August 26th.

I'm planning on focusing on 20m during the day, 40m at night and occasionally 6m, but I can tune and operate on everything from 80 - 6 so I'm definitely open to a Sked if you need that grid on a particular band.

Likewise, please don't hesitate to reach out for a Sked if you'd like! I am hoping to be on the air each day for at least a few hours (mostly in the afternoon, Eastern time zone). Some operation will be done from pontoon boat! Pictures at https://qrz.com/db/W5MMW/VE3

I am also planning on being on the air running PSK during the Solar Eclipse QSO Party (August 21).

I will QSL as W5MMW/VE3 (pse include suffix) to LoTW and eQSL and will be handling Paper QSL cards from my QTH in Redwood City, CA. No SASE necessary, and I'll be printing special cards for this APE.

Thanks! 73
