Well, the knee surgery went well and only took 35 minutes!!

now the recovery process.  So far, it has been okay but painful. two of the
procedures I’m supposed got lift my leg and so far I have been unable to do so
but today I was able to raise it about an inch or two so some progress made
today.  I am supposed to start outpatient therapy on Tuesday so I’m not
looking forward to that but we will see.

Rick - N7WE

Don-
What a fantastic group of links!  Now I have some reading and thinking to do about my antenna project for 6m.  Good time to be planning and building even if you are up north and still having winter.  Looks like 6m antennas are small enough for a basement or garage build while waiting for the wx to improve.  Here in Florida, there are no basements and garage wx is only when it is below 90F - predicted for this week.  Last week we hit 90F!  Maybe some other antenna limited 070 members will jump in and build something and get on 6m this spring and summer.  I sure hope so.

Talking about 6m, I set up the DX eMail Alert that Stan - W9SMR - posted about.  (See his message #55830)  I've already got an email this morning alerting me to a possible sporatic E opening from my location, including a suggested beam heading, with a link to the DXMap that plots the stations in QSOs - like PSK Reporter.  Not sure what modes they were using - but great info.  Maybe if a bunch of PSKers were using that eMail Alert system we could get some PSK action going this season. Of course I've got to get something up for an antenna first - hi hi.

Anyway a great big "THANK YOU!" from me (and I'm sure many others) for posting this!  Now back to those links.....

Rick N7WE,

One good thing about 6 meter antennas (or VHF/UHF antennas) they are small and easy to home-brew (that or you find many cheap used VHF/UHF antennas at HamFests because they are small, easy to haul, and many folks buy but find VHF/UHF activity too low to keep their interest...that is if they don't know where or what on the bands).

Anyway....you have a very nice place there so on a 15ft pole and a few materials you might have laying around the house (or cheap at local home improvement store) for a few bucks you would able to put together another halo or small 2 element 6 meter yagi quite easily.  I have used some of the below methods for 17m and 30m yagis...paint the 6 meter antenna black and pole then it tends to go unnoticed (and even at 15 to 20 ft for a 6m antenna will work quite well....have had with or without rotor as hand turning only takes a few minutes).

See if any of the below links might help on a homebrew at a fraction of the cost or cheap.

https://w3dhj.net/6mhalo.html

Good luck with your antenna project and on the 6 meter band (also I know you know the above mentioned as a seasoned Ham but throwing it out if others may want to get on the 6m band cheap...as we know when the 6m band is open it doesn't take much!).

Thanks to all who replied to my posting about 6m this coming season.  Here's hoping there will be enough of us give it a go to make PSK31 active on the band again.   I believe the default freq for FT8 is 50.313 so hopefully they will stay somewhat with the published band plan and won't shift down that far and encroach on 50.290.  I'm saving pennies for a yagi for the back yard but will have to keep it below the roof line to avoid HOA difficulties.  Sure wouldn't want to put what I've already got at risk!  Thanks again to everyone and hope to work you on 6m!

Re: Wondering about 6m PSK31 this coming season

Don_KB9UMT

Hi Rick N7WE and all,

I'm not sure if anyone remembers WA5UFH Tip in TX (very much into VHF/UHF weaksignal) but he retired from Ham Radio a few years ago but back around 1999 to maybe 2004 he made a very strong attempt to push for PSK use on 6 meters thus the PSK mark at 50.290 USB (which is the mark most use today for those that want to try).  I tried to GOOGLE Tips old website with DOS (Digital On Six) members which I was a part of but the site is no longer:
https://www.dxzone.com/dx23546/digital-on-six.html#

Also my friend Ev W2EV use to use PSK mode for PropNet but not sure they do much on 6 meters anymore:
http://propnet.org/index.shtml

Anyway we use to have fun on 6 meter PSK but not sure unless you get a lot that will give it a go how much fun it will be......reason being once DOS stopped it was very hard for just a few of us that kept parked on 50,290 USB PSK to actually stay there when the band was open.  In other words when 6 is open it is fast and everyone wants to work as many as possible while open so everyone goes to where the activity is which for the most part is the voice/SSB/CW for quick contacts so you might be sitting on 50.290 alone and no one coming up that high to work you but I found it always fun to keep trying (don't waste my time these days but would try again if I knew others would).

What I found out on 6 meters PSK is: When the 6 meter band is weak or the start or ending of closing the PSK was of course there when the voice/SSB section was not good enough signals/audio to carry on but PSK did just like the CW ops carried on.....UNLESS multipath then no matter how strong decode was hit/miss.  I also found testing with Tip and a few others that PSK can work MS or a 'PING' but it has to be a good rock or longer trail/ping to do so (several of those over the years but very very rare since no one used PSK much on 6 meters and for sure not for MS).

Wish you the best of luck but the hard part is sitting parked at 50.290 USB on PSK if you know the band is wide open and you know there is loads of activity on the 6 meter band but no one replies to your PSK CQ.....GL
