TDW 2021 in the books

GA - Bob - K4VBM

Boy that was a lot of fun - three whole days of PSKing.  Making contacts with all those familiar calls, especially my 24 x 7 partners, and some new member numbers for my LONP (still need to figure out how  to claim them all hi hi), as well as ALL the 0000 folks.  Even had a nice ragchew with a 0000 contact  who asked for some feedback on his signal, and turns out we have a lot in common (same age, similar work background, etc.).  I see some of them have already joined our group, and hopefully more to come.  Special thanks so much to the organizers, and also to those Bonus stations that were literally all over the bands.  You guys really helped with all the fun.  So nice to see everyone, and the bands full of PSK signals!  All I can say is WOW!  And the propagation gods even looked down with some favor on us.

I uploaded my .ADI, and this is what it told me:

CALL:K4VBM
POWER:High Power 100 watts
EMAIL:ptcorners@...
070 Number:2727

Qs:168 MEMBERS:86 BONUS:1700 Total:16148
Probably my best effort in any 070 contest so far!
Already looking forward to the next one!

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen.

The annual Three Day Weekend (TDW) event has concluded for 2021.  This years contest was one of the best I can recall since I became a member many moons ago.

First, I would like to thank our Bonus Stations; VA7GEM, KE5PYF, KD6TR, KC3FL, N6MG, KB3RAN, N5SLY, and N9AVY, for doing a fantastic job and devoting so many hours on the air to ensure everyone had every opportunity to grab the bonus points.  It did not seem to matter what band you went to, there was a bonus station on the band making contacts.  Your efforts greatly enhanced this years contest, and I applaud each and every one of you for your dedication to the club.

For me, this was the most satisfying contest that I have participated in, due to the enormous number of members/nonmembers participating over the weekend, I personally set a new record for contest contacts and points (well, except maybe for a contest many years ago that had some dubious point awards in order that Harvey, K5PAX, could rack up over a million points.

I applaud the membership for their participation and patience in ensuring that both members and nonmembers could get you in the log.  At times conditions were rough, but many hung in there to ensure the proper exchanges were made.  Bravo Zulu to each and every one of you. (thats an old Navy term).

As I have often stated, lack of propagation is due to lack of operation!  The club, the finest PSK club in the world, demonstrated over this weekend that even 15 and 10 meters can be used, all it takes is putting signals on the air.  It did not matter what band you went to, during the appropriate time for maximum operating for the band, there were PSK signals across the waterfall.  It was beautiful to see all the traces, even though conditions on my end prevented contacts.

Again, thank you my fellow members for a fantastic contest, and continue to operate, try all bands, you never know when you will grab that rare one!  Also, who has more fun than a 070 Club member?

Our next contest is the Firecracker Sprint in July. While I would like to see everyone on the air, I will not be able to participate this year (family vacation plans, and xyl says I cannot take my radio gear!).

Quote from a conversation between Steve and I regarding this issue:

Rules of the contest say that "member" is defined as "member at the start of the contest." If someone is a non-member "at the start of the contest", they are considered a non-member for the contest duration and give out 0000 for the whole contest regardless of whether they join during the contest.

That really only affects the contest scoring, though. Since 070 doesn't require a formal exchange of member numbers during a QSO (like 10-10), all the QSOs on or after the day of membership count for LONP for both parties. So "giving out a number" is irrelevant. Members get credit for any QSO after membership, even contest QSOs where the only exchange is SPC

So, based on this, since their membership was not approved prior to start of contest, they count as 0000 for contest purposes.  They will count as LONP for contacts made after their date of membership.

Hello everyone -

I discovered the TDW via the contestcalendar.com website and, because I really enjoyed working PSK31 around 15 years ago, I wanted to give it a try. I've been disappointed in the lack of PSK31 ops recently, but I was very pleased to discover a group that was still actively involved in the mode, and further to encounter some very friendly and courteous operators during the weekend.

Although reception is continuously poor at my QTH, I managed to make 38 contacts, which enabled me to apply for membership in this great organization. I was very impressed with the dedication of ops who continued to CQ right up to the last minute on Sunday, especially Barry VA7GEM who was my first contact of the weekend.

Anyway I wanted to thank everyone who went into the logbook during the contest and also to thank Jim K5SP for dealing with membership apps so quickly. I'm very happy to be a member and hope to meet you all on the air.

check for member numbers >2786, the checker will not recognize those numbers due to malfunction in software that cannot be fixed.

Re: TDW all over

It was a looooooooooong sprint but always fun.  Nice to see the DX pop up in the late afternoon and early evening.  I uploaded to the endorsement checker and was surprised with my new 308 Qs I didn't get any new LONP.  When I uploaded, Lee, N5SLY uploaded at the exact same time and he showed an error, guess we doubled.  Was strange seeing two stations uploading at the same time.  Decided to upload the same file again and came up with 12 new LONP so was a successful weekend for me.

It was a great weekend!!!    I think I finished with 94 contacts, definitely a record for me, including 19 on 10 meter!    I finally got enough 10-10 numbers to join that group too.
Like others, I had contacts from 10-80 meters.   I tried 6, but no luck there.

It was also great to see so many 0000's along the way.
Thanks to all the bonus stations (I think I got every one at least once).
