Daryl:

Glad to hear your feeling on opening up contests to non-members... i feel the same way now that I had time to digest all the responses.  PODXS certainly doesn't want to drive members away and not alienates a ham more than telling him he doesn't have a number so he can't play with us.

If you liked the 50 contacts; then you'll like the `100 070 numbers for LONP and when you're really hooked you  can go after the 24/7 , the WTW and others which will make you crazy nuts on PSK !

. Contests are great and I like the fact that some are "sprints" which last about 6 hours; I can't do that 48 hour contest stuff these days.

Have fun !

I joined the club right after the last pskfest.  I was very new to psk at the time, & pskfest is how I got the majority of my first 50 psk QSOs.  I don't have the greatest antenna setup, but I still didn't have much trouble getting those 50.  I like the 50 requirement to join.  The 50 goal helped me improve my operating skills, I found it a reasonable goal to convince me that I like operating psk and I will continue to operate psk, partly because of having achieved the 50 goal, but also because of the club and this community.  I also like the idea of opening up the contest(s) to all, and take no issue with the point schemes already described.  I believe opening up the contest(s) would help to keep this mode more active - the more the merrier.  On a related note - I began my digital experiences on JT65, then FT8, and without those modes I am certain I would not have earned WAS, and would not have as many DX contacts.  But some things about JT65 & FT8 that very quickly left me wanting... just my humble opinion... I would feel a lot better about earning WAS on psk than FT8, I know I'm going to have to work harder and longer for that, and my psk contacts are always more memorable & meaningful than any of my FT/JT QSOs.  I have also noticed FT8 traffic expanding beyond ".074" at times.  I was a bit peeved when I first saw FT8 traffic moving into the JT65 zone, but I got downright annoyed when I saw FT8 traces showing up in .070 (both 20m & 40m).  Lastly, psk allows for a real on-air conversation, something FT8/JT65/JT9 lack.  I still work FT8 if I only have a few spare moments to operate or I need a "QSO fix."  But I'm finding my real interest is more in the psk mode, and now that I'm learning how to work the mode & I've found this community, I wish I had more time to spend on-air.  73 to all...

Aw c'mon Jerry.  You know that we rely on those spread sheets to inform us of alien arrivals on this planet.  Without them solar storms would be the least of our worries.

Re: Icom 7300 help needed

Ray Clements

John

I have a 7600. The 7300 setup will be similar.

Your computer will treat your ICOM radio USB connection as a combination of a com port (used for rig control) and a sound card (playback and recording). I am assuming you have a PC, but a Mac or Linux computer will be similar.

If you have not already done so, you will need to go into the Control Panel/Device Manager settings and find out the proper serial port settings for for the radio (COM port number, bit rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits). For my 7600, the com port shows up as a Silicon labs USB to UART Bridge. You will need to write down the COM port settings and then enter them into your digital mode software so your computer will communicate properly with the radio. Your software should be able to change bands, change frequency, change mode, etc. and read back the radio settings.

Then you will have to go into Control Panel/Sound and set you the sound card in your radio. Initially, it will show up under Playback as USB audio codec speakers and under Recording as USB audio codec microphone. To minimize confusion, I suggest you rename them to ICOM Input for the computer playback and ICOM Output for the computer recording. That will eliminate confusion when choosing between sound cards in the future. Proper naming is absolutely necessary if you have multiple USB sound cards as I do.

You have to set the ICOM audio as either the Default or Default Communication device. I suggest the latter as computer alarms (beeps, buzzes, music, etc.) go out over the default sound device and you do not want that going out over the radio; the FCC frowns on that type of transmission.
You will also need to set the playback and recording levels as appropriate to send and receive good audio signals. If you set the playback level too high, you are likely to get splattering of your signal on the air; that will get you irate comments from some 070 members. Too low a signal and nobody will hear you. Watch the ALC level on your radio. Likewise, a recording level that is set too high (or too low) will mess up your waterfall and ability to decode signals. Start at 50% and the adjust up or down as needed.

If you need any "hands-on" assistance with these settings, please send me an email direct rather than tying up the reflector.

I also suggest you try to find another 070 club member in the Greater DFW area who can get on the air and help you adjust your settings. I know there are a number of 070 folks that would be love to help with PSK31. Some might even be able to help with FT8.

Help!   Is anyone using an Icom 7300.   I just got one, and I've followed all the steps to make sure that I'm correctly on the digital modes, but I'm not making any contacts on PSK31 and that damned FT-8.    In checking pskreporter, I see a lot of FT-8 reports, but I've yet to make a contact... and I have zero PSK31 contacts.

I've searched the web, looked at all of the videos with settings, checked my audio on the internal scope, and I have no clue.   Any advice, screen shots, etc would be most helpful.

Thanks,

I'm not in front of the the 7300 but like all ICOM radios to get audio from the USB port you have to go into Menu -> Connectors and change the audio settings to USB from Mic.   BTW when you go back to SSB don't forget to change the same settings back or you will be shouting into a dead mic   (voice of experience).
