Yep, it was an ambush!!

I was petty sure that it was your very first CQ. You were strong and bright here in NE Indiana. Hard to miss.

So...I pounced on you!

I will probably be headed back to FL on Oct. 11th. I might miss you that day if you are still travelling. What is your overall schedule?

Tnx fer the new Grid EM03. Will be looking for you tomorrow in DM83.

Hi Stan,

You must have been waiting for me to start transmitting. As soon as my transmission stopped you were right there. Good copy all the way.

Hi Jim,

Unfortunately we buzzed by on our way to Lubbock and appreciate the offer.  We come up to the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge mostly once a year.  Will have to schedule and eyeball on our next visit.  Heading for Albuquerque tomorrow.

Well, how about that? Thanks for the pic and the additional information.  Probably in part due to the fact that I am not a county hunter/mobile guy, I was unaware of the existence of such a device.

I am a bit amazed that it handles the wind stress over time, even with the guying.

Thanks again es 73

Tom remember we are talking about a mobile installation. I use a 54 inch Hustler mast on top of my van and a machined adapter that allows six resonators to be mounted horizontally. There is a commercial adapter marketed but I don't remember the source.

So things look like this:

You can just see the guy lines at the bottom of the photo. With that much wind resistance at Interstate speeds the mast needs to be securely guyed.

Hope that helps.

Peter,

I have a Hustler 6BTV vertical with resonators.  I'm at a loss trying to envision horizontal mounting of a resonator on a vertical antenna.  Clue me in.  Or maybe a picture?

Mobile Operation--a couple of comments

Peter, NN9K #2629

Mobile operation and setup can be challenging for SSB, CW and Digital operation. K0BG has an excellent site that is a good reference and good reading. Now days correctly providing power to a radio can be challenging if you have one of the newer generation of automobiles but K0BG keeps his site up to date as much as possible.

And as we know antenna choice and placement is another part of the equation that can make or break mobile performance. I've transmitted from over 1500 counties, bent masts and lost antennas to tree limbs in the process. So think carefully about your installation.

I'm partial to Hustler masts and resonators and mount my resonators horizontally to keep the overall system height under 12 feet but I still have had to remove the masts and resonators to get under some low bridges. I don't go thru many fast food drive thrus! And yes the resonators work nicely mounted in a horizontal position. With the current propagation downturn I only mount resonators for 17, 20, 30 and 40-meters. An 80-meter resonator can be added if I am going to be running early morning or late at night.

As you may have guessed I'm a county hunter, CW only but MARAC, the Mobile Amateur Radio Awards Club does offer awards for digital county hunters. Check their web site for all the nitty-gritty information.

So if you decide to go mobile, have fun and drive safely.

Ok, tomorrow we are going thru EM03 in TX. We are currently in EM13 in Sherman, TX and will be heading West on US82 in the morning. So will probably be calling CQ probably around 10:00 am CDT or 11:00 am EDT. Will be up around 14.072 actual frequency plus or minus.
