Re: Daylight Savings Time and Smoke Alarms

All my smoke alarms have 10-year lithium batteries installed. However, they still need to be tested periodically. The lithium batteries are more expensive, but you won't have to change batteries as often, so they are a good value. It is important that you record the date of installation so you do not go beyond the 10 years.

Also do not forget to test your carbon monoxide alarms as well and replace batteries as needed. As we go into the winter months with doors and windows sealed and furnaces and fireplaces in use, the chances of CO poisoning increases. CO detectors are required in or just outside every bedroom. Combination fire/CO alarms are available. Be sure you have a CO detector in the laundry room as well if you use a gas-fired dryer as blocked or restricted exhaust pipe can cause exhaust to back up into the room.

Stay safe my friends.

Daylight Savings time ends tonight at 2 AM local for most of the United States.  Remember that your local offset to UTC also changes!

Fire Marshals and Public Safety Officials recommend that you use this date to change the batteries and test all of your smoke alarms - particularly if you have "hard wired" smoke alarms as required in new construction since 1989.  They will test fine with the power on, but a Flat Backup Battery = Worthless!  They also report that while on the average 7 people die in a house fire every day, the risk of dying in a house fire is cut in half in homes with functioning fire alarms.

Re: ADIF Upload Problems

Jerry N9AVY

Karl:

Seriously,  there could be one of a couple problems.  You may not have uploaded properly to checker. I’ve had this happen a couple times over the years. Once you’ve uploaded your logs and you see you call at top of list, you have to wait a bit before you click on refresh.  If you click on “refresh “  too soon, your call sign will not turn BLUE.  That is a clear indication you might have done the click too soon.   Have patience and give it another 15-20 minutes before clicking “refresh” again.  Go get a snack and a beer while waiting, hi hi !!

There are also times when you and one or more others may be uploading at same time and that could cause a problem.  Or the checker may be having issues; however, I’ve never seen that happen except when it affects everyone.

When I upload a file, I usually put “n9avy110118.adi “ it shows that it’s me and the date of current upload because sometimes I’m forgetful and lazy.

Good luck and I sure you’ll get some other answers.

I had the exact same problems a few weeks ago – maybe it was a few months, no report information, no numbers changing and everything showing zeros.  I was sure it was me but I just went back and tried the same ADIF file I had used the last time it failed, and this time it worked perfectly, all my numbers are correct and it shows the report  Information.  I've made no changes, even using the original ADIF file.  Go figure?

I'm using HRD software.

For the last few days, I am having problems with uploading ADIF files to the Checker. I can upload, but besides getting the correct number of records on the actual upload page, there does not seem to be any data extracted. When I click on my call sign, all categories show zero. Not even the information about the ADIF producer is shown anymore.

When I first tried to debug this, I noticed that I had a number of errors that were reported behind the "rpt" link, I tried to resolve all these and that still did not make any difference. Even cutting the file down to just a few entries that definitely used to work, and I am still not getting anything.

I am using RUMLogNG on a Mac for my logging, and that software has not changed since my last successful upload.

Is anybody else running into these problems?

Thanks and 73,

I moved from Digipan to Fldigi a few years ago.  I'm happy with the autologging with Fldigi.  It works well for me and my Yaesu 450AT and SignaLink USB.

Hi John,
My answer is, whichever one you are confidant in helping Elmer your friend.
I have used Digipan forever, Hamscope and DM780 as well.
I really liked the older version of Digipan.... sorry it's gone and out of date.

But when it comes to operating different flavors, logging and ease of operating I have become a fan of FLDigi.
I recently did a demonstration to new Hams of various modes and also CW, including logging and uploading.
I used FLDigi for most, except for FT8.

Again, use what you can explain. When we do "31 Flavors" again, I think FLDigi would be best. Just click and shoot :)

I fee your pain, Barry.  However it seems like they finally got all the hiccups out with the new build.

I’ve tried other software and always come back to the HRD suite.

The only thing missing is a Cabrillo file generator. I am still trying to find an

Re: Helping a friend

Rick - N7WE

Jerry-
I vote for Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) and Simon's last free version (5.24.38) is still available at a number of web sites.  Google "old free version of Ham Radio Deluxe".  It includes DM780, and while it does not have all the bells and whistles of the current paid version, it STILL is a great program.  Log book, rig control (not available with just a Signalink - need something like microHam USB), virtually all the digital modes except the WSJT-X stuff, alarms - audio through your computer sound card (070 member and LONP download files are available on hamclubs.info).  Logbook has ADIF converter that works FB for 070 Progress Checker uploads.

After HRD changed some players and got things straightened out a couple of years ago, I went ahead and bought the new version (which during the "troubles" I swore I'd never do).  IMHO it is well worth the one time fee. Support is included for the first year, but don't bother with the "annual support subscription." Once you have it up and running, I have found no need for support.  And the updates, bug fixes, etc are free to licensees.  There are a TON of users out there and an internet plea for help generally answers any problem without needing their technical support.

So my vote is get the old version, use it for a while, and if you like it upgrade to the paid version.  My 2 cents.  Hope you get him up and going in short order.  Look forward to working him - 070 #437 definitely qualifies as an Old Time 070er!

I run the FT 817D and FT 450D here on ALL digital modes,
both use the same SignalLink I/O cable and patch headder.
My PSK 31 software is DigiPan 2004, before DigiPan was G3PLX. Yes tried ALL the others, $$ and free on win XP thru win 10, always came back to DigiPan. Only drawback .. lousy logger .. history lQQkup is great but field and format just awful, N1MM+ solved all my problems.  N1MM+ is also the best thing that ever happened to Field Day.

Hi Matt,

Thank you very much for the honor.  We really did not do anything special except try to be available when we passed thru a rare grid.  Kathy and I both had a lot of fun working 070 grid hunters and other 070 members in our travels.  We are sorry that propagation did not workout for some of the other members looking for those grids.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the awarding of the PSK Traveller Certificate and Rollo Dog Tag to Dick – KC3EF – for his activation of many rare and wanted grids while operating as KC3EF/M during his trips throughout the United States.  He has made a memorable contribution to the 070 Club and its members through his efforts and it is fitting that he be recognized in this manner. Thank You Dick!

And special thanks to Kathy his XYL, who drove many, many miles while Dick was at the keyboard.  She contributed greatly to this effort through her very willing help and support. Thank You Kathy!
