Similar to APE but less restrictive – you can operate at home if you wish, but must use a portable antenna and rig away from your base station. Use of shore power is OK. I am set up with my foldable hexbeam out on the patio, and a laptop and I-7000 on the dining room table. I have only contacted one station so far, KC3FL in Florida, the whole other corner of the country from here – I am in the PNW ad it is an RF black hole. I have seen Alan, WL7CG from Alaska, but haven’t been able to contact him. Hope to get Rick, N7WE pretty soon. He is taking a break.

Managed to get an EFHW up in the backyard - only 15 feet high.  But it is working somewhat.  Made 3 contacts so far.  I'm on 20m 14.070 - 14.071 to get away from the PSK63 on the EU DX contest.  Hope to work you!  Go Daze!  Go Chimp Chase!

OK, I did get on and make a few QSO last night.  Later then I expected as company dropped by.

NOW, today (after 1200z)  I had problems getting the "working last night" W10 machine and Winwabler to work (correctly - as it was last night).  Is it the heat (87F going to 92F) ??  maybe?

I switched to my Raspberry Pi + Fldigi.  It is working, but I am seeing only PSK63 and stations working EU PSK contest.

IT IS hot, I am going to try later this afternoon.  I was only running 5 Watts, but solar...  The 12m mast with 12m wire/9:1 balun tunes well.  I tested 80m to 15m with good SWR before using the ATU.

I am trying to "iron" out the kinks with Winwabler.  I have used it before, its been a while.  Not using Raspberry Pi as I "think" Winwabler (and W10) may be better for "contests" aka FD.

Tomorrow, morning (after 1200z) I plan on being portable.

OK, if the station is outside with portable antenna, can I operate remote?  (inside - not in shack - portable wifi)

CHIMP CHASE  -  Let Us Know Your Plans

You’ve had a couple weeks to make your plans. Please let us know if you plan to go Chimp Chase portable and we will look for you!!

A Chimp qualified portable expedition site must be away from your home radio shack. You may use home power but you need to set up a temporary/portable antenna and station away from the home shack. Backyard ops and park picnic benches are encouraged for this category.

Due to heat and some homebrew antenna mis-measurements, I will only be chasing you Chimps instead of being a Chimp today on my usual antenna. With any luck, the antenna will be corrected by this evening when it's cooler, or tomorrow.

I plan to "activate" my backyard on 22 and 23 May starting around 1500Z (11am EDT) as a CHIMP. Will likely break from 1700Z to 2100Z due to temperature. Look for me on 20m primarily. Will likely poke around 40m, too.

I was on the air already from Fancy Gap Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Grid EM96pp  at 3000' elevation.  Ran a hamstick and made 8 contacts before the band went to sleep.   Thanks, Lee N5SLY for the special event station.  Contact s with Cuba, MA, IL  N9AVY,  OH, ON, TX, MN and QC.  Not a bad circle, I'd say.

I'll be back on the air tomorrow  Saturday for Endorsement Daze.  Look for me on 20 and 40 meters.  Plan to get some wire in the air tomorrow with tree hung dipoles.

See you in the morning.

I'm planning to be on this evening as N7WE/P - portable from my driveway.  Antenna will be a HamStick on a magmount on the roof of my CRV.  Rig will be the K3 powered by Bioenno BLF-1212A battery.  Operator all folded up in the back seat!  Will start at about 0000 UTC on 20m and if it has closed will move to 40m.  Will post here if and when I move.  Probably only on for an hour or so tonight.  Hope to do more Saturday afternoon EDT.  I'm a Chimp... come chase me!

CHIMP CHASE - W3HF

Steve W3HF

I am hoping to do a backyard Chimp effort, mainly as a test of the portable station. I haven't used it for a few years, and have a new laptop and SignaLink USB to wring out. This is in preparation for an opportunity to use my VQ9HF license during the summer. Station consists of a multi-band portable vertical and an FT-857.

My Chimp activities are subject to pre-emption by my duties to my wife during our neighborhood garage sale tomorrow.

TDW Bonus Stations

Jim K5SP

The selection of bonus stations has been completed, and we have a group that spans the entire US time zones.  Unfortunately, only one "DX" station volunteered.

Selected:

East Coast: KB3RAN and KC3FL.

Midwest: N5SLY, N9AVY, KE5PYF

Left Coast: N6MG, KD6TR (last year's Top Dawg)

DX: VA7GEM

Good luck to all in hunting down these volunteers for the Bonus Station Credits.

Hoping to go Chimp Chase Portable, but it is dependent on the arrival of an "in-transit" laptop battery. It will probably be Car Portable with a HamStick on a magmount - 20 or 40m.  Times TBD.  Will post here if plans come together.  But if it doesn't come together, I will be on for LONP contacts and chasing Chimps from the shack.

Psk Reporter and spotrting

Stan's message on Endorsement Daze mentions spotting stations on Psk Reporter which is a great aid to see activity on a band.  I'm not sure if other software has to be setup to spot stations, but I do know Fldigi requires it to be configured to achieve spotting.  If you are using Fldigi and haven't set it up, it's very simple to do.
Under configuration, Misc. check all boxes except the one that says "Disable spotting when signal browser(s) are not visible"  On the main screen you have to check the "Spot" box at the upper right.  After doing that, every time you start up Fldigi or change band, you will show up on the map as being on the air as a spotting station on that band.  You will also be able to download from Psk Reporter a log of all the stations you spotted during the past week.
Very important, Psk Reporter looks for the DE then a call sign two times before it spots you so use your call two times in your macros to improve your spots.
