Spots!!! - KB3RAN/4 Dave is continuing his portable ops on 20m this morning and KD0NMD Dudley is also on from NE.  Dudley is EN21 if you haven't filled that grid.  Both with strong signals into central Florida.  Dudley said I was weak, but things should improve to the west as the sun does its trick on the ionosphere.

Wow!

This morning QRZ is reporting a SFI of 94 and a K of 0!!!!  It has been a long time since we've seen those kind of numbers.  Definitely a day to get on the bands and have some fun!  Hope to see you on the waterfall.

Re: QRP sticker #endorsements

Dave -

That looked perfect to me, so I just uploaded it for you (with your callsign) to see how the checker reacted.

And it worked. It's showing the QRP sticker as an endorsement to apply for, probably just like you saw. (I left that step for you to do.)

I can't explain what happened yesterday, but there was at least one other member whose upload was messed up yesterday. (That was Milt N6MG--he tried again late last night and it's still not right.)

We'll see if this one sticks around longer today. And I can't promise that the endorsement processing will work, but at least the log-checking part still seems to be intact for this one.

Steve

Re: Just worked our newest member

Very unusual indeed. I checked my log again, and it's there.
I'll chalk it up as experience.
And, if you say the qso isn't in YOUR log, then I'll sure remove it from my log.
Ignore the LotW request for confirmation.
Now, I get to look forward to our 1st qso all over again!
Will you be operating in the 070 Club's Three Day Weekend Contest next weekend?...
June 4th, 00:00 Z to June 6th, 23:59 Z? 72 hours!
If so, see ya there.
Milt.

Howdy guys,

Hate to be the topic of controversy.  I don't have QSOs with either KB3RAN or N6MG.  I've tried to pour through all my logfiles in case I've made a mistake.  FLDIGI saves a text .log file of text that's captured, not sure if it's a signal I've selected or not, in which case, I see KB3RAN in a QSO with CO7HH around 5/21 2214Z.  That's the only reference to him I can find.  I have no QSO in any mode on LOTW either.  Can you guys double check?

To the best of my recollection, the first exchange was Jerry, N9AVY, and right after was John, KC3FL.  I've yet to decide the best way to keep track, but I had deliberately made just an empty 070.adif log file the other day in the meantime.

In the "good old days" that was acceptable, but the FCC has grown into just one more big government bureaucracy as evident by their now requiring every ham to have an email address (dumb because I have a friend who moved to TN recent who has no internet service at home and has to drive 40 minute to public library for internet !)  and let's not forget the now required FRN number one has to get before taking an Amateur exam ! My friend can't even get decent cell service has has to go to end of long driveway down by highway to get a marginal signal...  great technology ... back to 2 tin cans and a piece of string !

On another note... just read ARRL Letter and they have now started a BOTA  (Boats On The Air) to go along with POTA & SOTA.    Wonder how long it will be before the is an OHTA (Outhouses On The Air)   Emoji

There are no 4-character suffixes in current FCC-issued amateur radio licenses. (I think there may be some in other countries.) But that doesn't mean that there haven't been 4-character suffixes issued for US amateur radio operators in the past.

One of my favorite stories in amateur radio callsign history was driven by the fact that the Federal Radio Commission (the predecessor of the FCC) decided to issue special callsigns for "permanently portable" stations. (Up until that time, you had to specifically request in advance and receive permission to operate portable.) For a few years, the format of these calls were suffixes that started with two letters Zs, e.g., W3ZZA. Obviously, though, that would allow the issuance of only 26 callsigns in each of the nine then-existing districts. So when they reached ZZZ, they started with ZZAA, then ZZAB, etc. Eventually the FRC (or perhaps the FCC, which took over in 1934) started issuing "regular" callsigns for the permanently portable stations, and the ZZ calls disappeared a few years later when they expired.

I can document hundreds of these callsigns in my callbooks from that era. But just for fun, I bought a 1932 QSL card for W8ZZAP:

Dave -

You uploaded to the 070 awards checker, right? http://hamclubs.info/070-checker/  ?

There's no sign of your file there. The only upload shown for today was N7WE at 17:11 EDT (2111z).

A few of us were talking about this and aren't sure what's going on. Rick N7WE did his upload as a test after he didn't see your file.

Two suggestions:

1. Try uploading again, just to see if it was a temporary glitch. And take special note of any messages it displays.

2. Send me (directly) the ADIF file, assuming it's not your entire log. I'd like to look at the QRP entry.

Sorry for the delay in responding. We've had to poll the group to recall how this one was done. The specific wording that's in the listing harkens back to the early years of the club, when all endorsements were processed manually. Obviously there's no way to upload a brag file to the endorsement checker.

We believe that when the checker was written, it implemented a rule that looked for the ADIF tag TX_PWR, which is defined as "the logging station's power in watts (>0)." If the checker finds a QSO that has TX_PWR included with a value between 0 and 5, the checker "awards" the QRP bumper sticker. We just don't know if that portion of the checker is still working.

So give it a try and let us know how it works. If this turns out to be another situation where the checker is not working, we'll figure out another way.

Coming 1 Week -TDW 2021-Three Day Weekend Contest

TDW – Three Day Weekend Contest - TDW – Just 1 Week Away

Three Day Weekend will run:

0000 UTC Friday, June 4 - to 2359 UTC Sunday, June 6 – (72 Hours)

This PODXS 070 Contest includes all bands from 160M to 6M (no WARC Bands).

The contest is open to all amateurs. Welcome all Newcomers and invite them to join us.

Be sure to review the rules at: TDW Rules

There will be 8 Bonus Stations spread across the continent, so everybody should have plenty to pick from. Bonus Stations count as 100 points.

2020 TDW Top Dawg Tom, KD6TR, will be a Bonus Station. He will be joined by another PNW target, Barry, VA7GEM. The 8 bonus stations straddle the US with 2,571 miles separating VA7GEM and KC3FL. And N5SLY and KE5PYF are cozied up just 64 miles apart.

Here is the complete list of 2021 Bonus Stations.

A popular contest like the TDW is an optimal opportunity to make great progress on your endorsements. Several members are oh, so close to LONP success.  Matthew, KT5WB sits at 98 QSOs; Darl, NA8W is at 90; and Jim, W0JSL is at 90 poised to grab their LONP. Keep your eyes open for new Grids.

Don’t forget to check for Sporadic-E propagation on 6M. It is the season for that! Post your QSY intentions on the Reflector and be sure to spot anything seen (and yourself) on PSKReporter.

Logs will be due 1 week after the contest closes.

So check the rules, arrange your schedule to participate as much as you can, relax and enjoy the PODXS 070 TDW Contest.

 Stan
