Space Coast News of interest to Hams

Rick - N7WE

On Tuesday morning, SpaceX launched its third Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center here in Florida.  This was a 'first of its kind' launch with multiple sequential deployments of payloads at 4 different orbital heights!  Some of those payloads are of interest to hams.

They include the U. S. Naval Academy's PSAT 2 and BRICSAT 2 Cubesats each carrying amateur radio payloads.  Also, NASA's E-TBEx Cubesats will explore how radio signals are perturbed by disturbances in the ionosphere.  And finally NPSAT 1 from the Naval Postgraduate School will measure electron cloud densities in the ionosphere that effect long-range radio communications.  It may be a while before the public sees any new understandings from these experiments, but we can hope!  Personally, I'm hoping for maybe some more E-skip understanding!

The above was mined from https://spaceflightnow.com/2019/06/25/falcon-heavy-launches-on-military-led-rideshare-mission-boat-catches-fairing/

Re: FD Bulletin copy failure on PSK31 mode - no modulation of signal

Ray Clements

I copied the FD bulletin on both PSK31 and RTTY. I never saw a MFSK16 signal on the waterfall.

Initially, I tuned my radio to the frequency specified: 7.095 MHz for 40 meter band. However, when the signal showed up, it was at the very bottom of the waterfall. I had to tune down to 7.0935 to bring the signal to the middle of my waterfall.

Here in Northern IL, I had a clean signal and was able to copy the PSK31 signal with only one minor error. Since RTTY is not as robust as PSK31, decoding was poor; I could barely read the RTTY copy.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the comments.  The radio is an Icom 746Pro in USB data mode interfaced with a Navigator sound card.  I thought the location of the signal on the waterfall to be odd as well, but the transmission started exactly at the time that the FD Bulletin was scheduled and no other signals appeared near the ARRL assigned frequency.  I rotated the dial up and down 1 to make sure that I had not missed the real thing somehow, but saw no other signal.  It's hard to miss RTTY, PSK31 or MFSK-16 on the waterfall, so I was pretty puzzled.  As I mentioned it was just odd that 20M and 40M PSK and FT8 operation before and after the incident were normal.  I'll post when the culprit is revealed.

What looks weird to me is that what looks like an unmodulated carrier actually looks like it has definite shifts in frequency, and a second signal very slightly higher in frequency, maybe 25hz higher.  Or part of the same signal, I don’t know.

And then there’s the weird 300+ hz wide area around that signal which appears to have a different noise profile.

And then on top of all that, the strange signal is a bit more than 2100hz up on the waterfall, and if you set the VFO to the dial frequency they list, I would expect the signal to be down farther on the waterfall, down around 1000-1500hz, around the sweet spot in the SSB filters for most radios, and not way up high where a lot of radios will have the SSB filter cutting it off.

What transceiver was being used?  And what sound device?  It’s sure an interesting puzzle!

Mystery. Perhaps someone here will have a suggestion.  I run HRD DM 5 on Win 7 Pro. I tuned in Saturday & Sunday to copy the ARRL Field Day bulletin at several different times.  I had no problem copying PSK31 or FT8 transmissions.  I tuned the radio to the prescribed 7.095 or 14.095 frequency.  Each time the FD signal started on time but what was received on the waterfall was only an unmodulated carrier (See pic following).  The lack of modulation was present for all three of the modes broadcast, Baudot, PSK31, and MFSK-16.

This was the case for transmissions from both W1AW and K6KPH.  After the transmissions ended, still using HRD/DM I switched back to PSK mode at 14.070 or 7.070 and that was decoding fine.  I then switched to WSJT-X and that was working fine as well.  The successful xmit/rcv functioning <seems> to rule out the equipment and settings as the cause of no modulation.  Changing antennas made no difference.  Checked the cabling, all good.

This same frustrating situation  was repeated several times as I attempted to copy that bulletin. Fortunately another club member made a good copy. But I'd really like to figure this out.

Does anyone have an idea as to why the modulation for this signal wasn't making it to HRD/DM when everything else seemed normal?  It must be something simple that my mind is blocking...

Yea, I checked a bit earlier than you guys but not a thing on CW or PSK although
there were several SSB signals up and one with a 10-10# from AR!!

Indeed.  I have never had a problem copying the message in all three modes in past years, using the same equipment and software setup, so that is why the situation intrigued me.  I suspect the solution will present itself at some point.

No, the radio was on Data mode USB (Icom 746Pro) and worked fine for PSK when I turned the Big Knob down from 14.095 to 14.070.   Once I landed on 14.070, there were the modulated signals that I could copy.

Wasn’t that active for FD… maybe 25/30 contacts.  Heard lotsa stations , but they couldn’t hear me.  Time to add another 600 watts , hi !  Saw you once or twice , but you were in QSO and when you cleared you were either gone or QRMed.

Not real big on FD these days.  Sorry.

Worked FD Saturday after if started and shortly before if wrapped up on Sunday.

I made 35 contacts, all areas other than NY and that other state NJ???

Even got Canada.  NO DX.  But I had fun, even while hurting.

Geary, didn't they have the storms in Lawton that we had here, or were they not north of the Red River??? Had very limited operating time in between cells, and only managed 2 feeble contacts.?? Lightning kept me off the air most of the weekend, and yesterday was really bad.
