And remember, WALC-NA doesn't require contacts with members. So even a non-member PSK QSO with an AK station would count.

Stan,

As a newcomer (PODXS # 2653), I found Endorsement Daze enjoyable.

I spent only a total of 5.5 hours on the air, but had 16 contacts (11 with PODXS 070 members) and managed to raise my LONP count from 11 to 20. Long way to go to make LONP, but that's OK.

I appreciated the "no contest" philosophy. On several occasions, I did an extended rag-chew with PSK-31 operators who were unaware of PODXS 070 or what the club does. So we got some "free press" on the air, just by virtue of the fact that there were multiple QSOs visible on the waterfalll and we were willing to stop and talk rather than get a signal report and move on. Member recruitment may be one of the most important benefits of Endorsement Daze.

Re: Endorsement Daze – FEEDBACK REQUEST

Stephen Melachrinos

Stan -

Here are some comments:

1. I think it was a good idea. It's good to get people on the air and using PSK31.
2. Propagation may be poor, but that's mitigated to some extent by getting lots of folks on the air at the same time. Some band is usually open at some time to somewhere, and if there isn't someone there, we tend to think the band is completely closed.
3. With propagation so poor, and band openings so limited, it's often tough to deal with time zone issues, the kinds of things that Barry and Tom are talking about wrt the Firecracker Sprint this weekend.
4. It was a little strange having the event run for 24 hours, when it was only sporadically "attended." (It seemed to me like there were fewer folks on than during our contests.) Maybe that will get better the next time.
5. The non-contest format (and opportunity to ragchew) should make it more attractive for members who don't like to contest.
6. I only wish there were more folks on the air. That can be mitigated by having more Daze events.

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate your taking the time to do that. I, too, think the events like this will be helpful for everyone.

So sorry you could not make a single contact during the Endorsement Daze - LONP event. Sad conditions, for sure.

I looked at your QRZ page. You have a very good setup there and an interesting back-story. From the 070 site I see you are almost halfway to that LONP Endorsement. Don't give up.

This is a great hobby and the 070 folks are among the best. Good luck and good DX

I think it is a great idea to have events like this, and I did turn on my station to participate. Unfortunately, between the storms here and the very poor propagation conditions I was unable to make a single contact. This has happened frequently for me lately. Once we get past the solar minimum, events like this might be better attended.

GO APE THIS AUGUST !

stan W9SMR

Summer is officially here!

Now it is time to start planning on GOING APE!

For our newer members, APE stands for August PSK31 Expedition - sort of a 070 version of Field Day.  But much more relaxed.  The rules are pretty simple - basically go at least 20 miles from home and go portable.  You can find the complete details by clicking this APE Rules.  Check it out!

And no, you don't need a battery or generator.  You can use commercial power if it is available.  You just cannot use preexisting amateur radio equipment or antennas at the site. But, you don't have to "rough it."  You can operate from an air conditioned cabin at the lake if you want.  Although there are some who insist on being out on a pontoon boat!

Talk it up to your friends from Field Day and your local Radio Club.  Convince them to join you in going APE!  You can go alone or you can have as many operators as you want.  Each operator may use their own call sign.  You can go APE for one day or the entire month of August.

To qualify for the 070 APE Award, you need only 20 two-way QSO’s.

Be sure to post your plans here on the list at least 2 weeks prior to your operation.

Or you can send your plans to the APE Award Manager. Bryon, W7RIV -  APE Award Manager

Start planning!  August is coming up real fast!

Stan, et al:

Had this event been a couple years earlier, it would have seen greater participation with better propagation. At bottom of sunspot cycle we can’t really expect much and being summer months greatly reduces chances of making contacts.  Many are out enjoying summer activities and playing radio is further thing from their minds.

Perhaps moving events like this to a month like October would produce better results. Winter months seem to have better conditions for making contacts.   This week 20m has seen 1 or 2 contacts on waterfall here in Northern Illinois (about 10 miles from WI state line).

Pickings are slim at best here in my area.  Am sure those members in PNW are suffering as well.

Just my 2 cents worth …

Re: GET READY FOR SOME FIREWORKS - 40M FIRECRACKER SPRINT

Rick - N7WE

Here in central Florida (the lightning capital of the US) our summer blessing is almost daily, and sometimes several times a day, T-storms.  The issue for summer contesting is not what time the band opens, it is when to tip the vertical back up so you can get on air.  Sometimes the cells just line up and freight train through, one after the other.  I think my record was up and down 5 times in one 24 hour period.  Continuous 6 hour block?  Good luck with that!  But you grow where you are planted.

Do you guys in the PNW get 40m openings to Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan?  It's been years since I could work Japan or Hawaii on 40m and I still have never worked Alaska on 40m from this QTH.

FT8 on 17 Meters

Jim K5SP

A few weeks ago, I posted to the NTX section director the following:

When is the ARRL going to do something with the developer of the software for FT8, and now FT4? His hardcoded frequencies for 17 meters and 30 meters infringe upon the PSK portion of the bands. PSK31 has used 10.140 and 18.100 for years but now 17 meters is unusable due to the takeover of the bandwidth with FT8. No one listens to complaints about this, and the ARRL is supposed to be the protector of the bands!

Here is his response:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns and frustration with new digital mode software, such as WSJT-X, hard coding frequencies that have been traditionally used by other digital modes. 17 Meters is a narrow band of frequencies which increases the potential of conflicts with different modes.

As you know, the US Frequency allocation chart (http://www.arrl.org/frequency-allocations) shows:

17 Meters
General, Advanced, Amateur Extra classes:

18.068-18.110 MHz: CW, RTTY/Data
18.110-18.168 MHz: CW, Phone, Image

In the past, conflicts between digital modes were only an occasional issue. But, today with the popularity of FT8, conflicts between modes has become a problem on most bands, including 17 Meters.

When Professor Joe Taylor, K1JT and his team released FT4 "hard-coded" for 14.054 MHz, several fellow CW OPS called me asking what the ARRL do now? However, the ARRL is not at fault because it is not a regulatory agency.

The ARRL suggests and pushes for frequency allocations and bandwidth, lobbying on behalf of our fellow Hams. The ARRL does not call the authors of Software.

As a fellow ham, I did contact K1JT when FT4 suddenly clobbered 14.054. Often we get more results with a calm approach, which is not easy to do when someone steps on a frequency we have been using for years with a lot of other fellow amateurs using our favorite mode.

The bottom line with a new Mode software tool is that there is no perfect frequency, regardless of what frequency they choose, it will probably conflict with another mode.

The FT4 team spent a lot of time attempting to find a balance in the Frequencies they chose. However, it is up to us, to determine if the frequency they placed in their software is appropriate. While WSJT-X configuration has pre-defined frequencies; we have control over what frequency we use. Currently, in WSJT-X, FT4 is configured for 14.080 and FT8 for 14.074.

This past ARRL Field Day serves as a great example of the popularity of the FT8. Is FT8 my favorite Mode, no, but I do use it and the new FT4, occasionally.

Generally, our Band Plans are based on "gentlemen's agreements.". For example the Slow Scan TV window 14.230 plus or minus 3. However, there is no rule saying a Phone Op can NOT use 14.227 - 14.233. However, if you have a long conversation using those frequencies, you will be interrupted and asked to move. SSTV users protect the frequencies, even if they are not active on it. And anyone that has been on the bands very long gains an understanding that those frequencies are for SSTV.

At HamCom, several ARRL members approach me about several issues, including one concerning frequency allocation on Friday. The issues were discussed during the working breakfast with ARRL President Rick Roderick, CEO Howard Michell, West Gulf Director John Stratton, and all attending Section Managers on Saturday Morning. Notes were taken when I stressed the need for legal boundaries, not just gentleman's agreements on frequency allocations. I am confident a change is coming.

So where does that leave you with PSK-31... The lonely voice does not move most groups to action but bear with me, please...

For example, several fellow hams came to me at HamCom asking why did the ARRL drop the Antenna "Parity act". I informed them to my knowledge the antenna and tower fight is not over, and the next morning at the meeting with ARRL leadership, I asked. Those same amateurs followed up with a first class letter to me that was waiting in my mailbox when I got home from HamCom on Monday. As I read the letter, I realized they wanted me to come to their meeting.

I called them and explained I would be at their meeting; the phone went quiet. After a moment, the members explained that they did not expect me to do that right away, but said I was welcome.

I called the West Gulf Director, who was on an airplane to Washington, DC, for a meeting.

John called me back between flights. I got the straight scoop that the Antenna and Tower fight is not over, and the ARRL is still in this fight. At the meeting, the members chewed me up, but in the end, many of the same guys, came up to me at the end and we had great fellowship. Why? Because I believe that they came to know me; that I am genuinely concerned about what is on their minds and yours.

I ask that all North Texas Section members please come straight to me in the future with questions and concerns. My contact info is on page 16 of any current QST. I hope you recognize my efforts to figure out who "Jim Innis" gives you some idea of how important it, is to me to genuinely listen to concerns of all fellow hams, especially ARRL members. That is why I ran for ARRL North Texas Section Manager and am very thankful to have the opportunity to work with you.

I will fight for you, but you and I alone cannot move mountains. Local Ham clubs are more than a place to meet and greet, or they should be!

I have not been on 18.100, in years but I will be listening occasionally now.

Your concerns and summary of my reply are being forwarded to our Division Director John Stratton. John’s contact info is on page 15 of QST.

As an acknowledgement of your participation in the ARRL Field Day on June 22 / 23, 2019, our PODXS 070 Club offers a
Field Day Participation Sticker.

Since our Awards Progress Checker has no means to check your log for Field Day participation, in order to receive your Endorsement Sticker it will be necessary for you to send an email directly to me (robinstan@...) by Sunday, June 30.  Please use 2019 Field Day in the subject line.  Send me the email even if you have already posted on the reflector that you participated!

The body of your email needs only your call.  Please DO NOT send or attach your log.  This is on the honor system.  If you say you participated, you participated! - even if you were in a support role (setup/tear-down, KP duty, etc. and never actual got on air.)  I will forward the complete list to those that take care of such things and your sticker will be included in our next mailing!

Send your email to: robinstan@...
