Re: The APES are Coming!

I say this because I, in fact, got the allowance for my APE in 2014 for the BSA Airfest.

http://www.podxs070.com/ape-august-psk31-expedition/ape-tall-tales-2014

It was only 13 miles from my home QTH, but it’s pretty obvious the spirit of the APE was met, and item #6 of the Requirements covers the bases for the allowance anyway.

6. All applications are subject to the aproval (or not) of the APE Award Manager. Applications determined inconsistent with the spirit of this award or the philosphy of the Penn-Ohio DX Society (PODXS) Ø7Ø Club may be rejected. The Penn-Ohio DX Society (PODXS) and the Ø7Ø Club reserve the right to waive certain requirements for this award as is deemed necessary.

I am looking forward to having contacts with all the members that are going to setup a APE station. I realize that the time, effort and expense to setup a APE station requires a big commitment. I would like to thank all those stations going APE this year.

I believe most members realized from the 1st time the KC9UR APE station went on the air that it more than met the distance requirements.

If a station did require special allowances I myself would definitely be in favor of granting the allowance for the simple reason the station requesting is already going the effort. To the majority of us I believe the spirit of the club is to fun and enjoy the hobby and not to get nick-picky.

All members benefit from the efforts of the few that go to the time and trouble of setting up a APE station. The majority of us do not go APE and to those that do I say again "THANK YOU".

PS to Stan and Bob I already have a frame ready for certificate #7.

If you go to a Downtown Park, be sure it is at least 20 miles away.

It’s that time again. The APES have warned us…they are coming!!

The 2019 APE list is short this year, but here are the stalwart members planning to assault the bushes and waterways to provide you with a unique opportunity:

August 9 – 11---- KC9UR (with W9SMR)   Bob/Stan

Location:  Clear Lake, IN  EN71nr  Overlooking the traditional Pontoon Boat

Bands: 80M to 6M with a variety of homemade portable antennas

Notes: This is the 7th Annual Pontoon Portable APE. Work them on 3 or more bands and       earn the coveted APE Hunter Certificate.                Can Jeff, W3WMU continue his 6 year success?

August 10 - 16---- K5KHK  Karl

            Location: Adirondack Mountains, NY  FN23

            Bands: 20M and 40M

Notes: Uncertain if internet will be available, but will attempt to post operating times.

August  21 – 25----KB3RAN  Dave

Location: Camden, ME, FN54 and wherever the winds blow

Bands: 20M with NVIS Dipole strung up into the rigging.

Notes: Operating from the Schooner Lewis R French – Windjammer. This is the oldest commercial sailing vessel in the US,
            launched in 1871
.

            For more info:  https://schoonerfrench.com

Make sure to contact all these APEs. They do it just for you!!

If you have been thinking of doing an APE this year, even if it is just a few hours in a downtown park, please send Byron, W7RIV a note

Bad Signal

Jerry,
I understand you're position, however I hope you, and all PODXS members,
if I have a signal 3 acres wide, you would
let me know either 'on the air' or by shooting me an e-mail.
I assure you there will be no indifference or threats.

The last thing I want to do is interfere with folks, or tarnish my LONP.

Jerry,

You could always try looking up call signs for the offenders in QRZ.com and sending them a private, polite e-mail to advise them of the problem.  I know I appreciate it if someone tells me my signal is causing problems.  You can’t see your own signal.

I also try to give an honest RSQ rather than a courtesy 599.  That third digit describes visible pairs, and if it’s less than a 9, you can work with the other station to try to correct the problem - less transmit power, less audio gain, whatever.
