PSK Survey Redux

Steve W3HF

Last week I sent out a survey to the 070 mailing list, asking for
your help in assessing how the 070 club is doing, what you like and
dislike, your operating practices, etc. As of this date, about 27% of
you have responded. To that 27% I say thanks. To the other 73% of
you, I ask that you take a few minutes and submit a response. This
survey is one of the ways the 070 "brain trust" (Jay*3 + Tom) decides
what to do in the future, and is an easy way to make your preferences
know to them.

I am repeating the survey below. If you have already submitted a
response, nothing else is needed--just delete this message. If you
have not yet responded, I hope that you will.

Steve

As some of you may remember, last year Jay 'DQU sent out a
survey to the 070 club. Well it's time to update the results, and I
have the honor of being your survey-taker this time.

Please send your response to me at w3hf@arrl.net And just in
case Yahoo obliterates that email address, it's w3hf(at)arrl.net.

I would suggest that you FORWARD this message to me at the
above address, and embed your answers right after the question.
Or you can send a message with answers coded to the question
numbers.

If any of you read these message on the Yahoo web server, by
logging in to the 070 group, you can click the Reply link near the
top of the message, and then change the address in the pull-down
window to mine.

Thanks for your help.

73,
Steve

Re: [PSK-TARA] RST or RS?

"Luděk Salač <ludek.salac@...>

R 5 100% copy
4 80 % copy
3 60 % copy
2 only call copy

S ---- no valid ( IC746 - S9, FT840 - S7, Home TRX - S???? )

T 9 - FB WIDHT ( 40 Hz for PSK31 )

7 - only harmonic signal, no spliter

3 - 500 Hz width signal, big spliter

Re: [PSK-TARA] RST or RS?

AA8QQJMauch@...

Ludek,
I was thinking something like this.

For "R" (Readability):
5= 100% copy
4 = 75% copy
3 = 50% copy
2 = 25% copy
1 = can see trace but can't copy it

For "S" (Signal strength):

5 = Very Strong sig
4 = Strong sig
3 = Medium sig
2 = Weak sig
1 = Very Weak sig

For "Q" (Quality);

9 = Perfect signal
8 = 1 or 2 sideband pairs
7 = 3 to 5 sideband pairs
6 = 6 to 9 sideband pairs
5 = wiping out the PSK subband
4 = power supply hum on rails, with or without keying
3 = drift upward in freq.
2 = drift downward in freq.
1 = Totally distorted (your signal's so ugly you better buy a new rig)

All problems seen on the air, all numbers used, but not gonna satisfy
everyone. hi.

Re: Does psk31FEC count towards the TARA contest??

Bernie <kf4fhs@...>

Hey Again Craig,

PSK31F sounds like an impressive mode for marginal conditions, but it seems
like most people use either Digipan or MixW and I don't believe that either
program offer PSK31F as an option, and as Steve pointed out, since everyone
in most contests are geared toward BPSK, it would be hard to find anyone to
warble with.
Sounds like a fun mode to play with, though.

Hello Bernie and the Gang. BPSK31FEC or psk31F..would be very
effective for longhauls and such. Your a bad Condxs resulting from
Solar flares etc. I have tested it alot very effective even copied a
friend in Texas abt 1100miles away 98% copy with no antenna at all.
PSK31FEC labeled as FEC in the Hamscope program. Sure not many
people will understand if your in Qpsk or Bpsk31FEC. but, it would be
a good way or going when condxs are not so grt. Specailly on the long
hauls were the phaseing is being destroyed which happens alot on BPSK.
Andalso running PSK10 or PSK63F would be nice to use but probably
illegal in contests. But ,Shouldsuch people as TARA and such consider
making PSK63F legal way much faster and abt as effective. So many
other modes better than PSK but, no one uses them. What abot Even PSK
hell. And some QRPp station are talking to each other across the pond
with like 40mw on 30m. on some Slo Mo modes,
Ok , C-ya in Contesto

KF4HOU asked:

it legally a PSK31 mode with a added FEC on it
I would think the official ruling would have to come from the TARA
authorities. What say you guys (Ed, Bill, Ernie)?

My guess would be that it is legal, as the basic modulation is
PSK31. But it might not be very effective in a contesting
environment, as there are very few stations using it. Most stations
expect to receive "regular" PSK31. If you are calling CQ in QPSK,
or PSK31FEC, very few stations would understand you.

It would be like running a SSB contest in Swahili. You might have
lots of signal power, but if no one can understand you, you will
not
complete many QSOs.

TARA's Digital Boss Goes CRAZY!!

ny2u@...

Greetings Fellow PSK'ers:

Can somebody PLEASE explain to me or shead some light on what has gone on with TARA's Digital Contest Manager - Ed, KC2HNC, and ALL these TARA Clocks? If my counting is right I see that TARA is now ready to award "7" of its very cool looking TARA Wall Clocks. Plus, he's got all those certificates too! I can't imagine what he'll try next! Is there any other club that would like to take Ed off our hands, before he bankrupts our club?  Take a look at the new list of prizes below and you tell me if he isn't going insane.

* Most
6 Meters contacts will receive a TARA Clock.
(Not open to Teams !)

* First Place SWL will receive a TARA Clock.

* First Place
Novice will receive a TARA Clock.

The "NEW" KC2HNC Tara Chairman Challenge

* 1st Station to work all US States wins a TARA Clock.

* 1st Station to work all VE areas, VE0-VE9,VO1,VO2,VY0-VY2.
wins a TARA Clock.

* 1st Station to work all JA areas (0-9) wins a TARA Clock.

* 1st Station to work all VK areas (0-9) wins a TARA Clock.

HF0POL endorsement proposal

Hi Jay,

Since January 2002, HF0POL has been very active in PSK mode
from a semi-rare location (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica,
IOTA AN-010). Perhaps you could design a 070 club
endorsement for contacting HF0POL on two different bands.
