Hey Zoli,

I'm not sure you want to see what some of us look like, it might be pretty
scary :-)

Hello Jay,

It would be interesting to put up a sub-page on the 070 PODX site with a
photo of every 070 member... what do you say to this idea?

Photos can be sent via email in an accepted dimension/resolution.

Hi Zoli,
Sounds like a neat idea. Maybe with a little write up by each member to go
with their photo. I think it would be doable. Any comments from the rest of
the gang?

What a coincidence.
This is the first year that XYL Tina and I are going to the outer banks
for
our vacation during the month of August. Guess I'll have to take a little
more equipment along. And I thought the high point of the vacation was
gonna
be learning to hang glide...

I will put up another post when I get more info on USI or IOTA, etc.

Thanks for the info Jay.

APE Announcement

Steve W3HF

Once again, our family will be heading to North Carolina for an
August vacation on the beach, and I will bring my PSK station with
us. Last year's operation was marginal--I only had 20m available,
and I had to miss three or four days out of the week due to a
business trip. I hope that this year turns out better. Expedition details
follow.

Destination:

Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina
Carteret County
IOTA NA-112 (Bogue Banks Island)
Grid Square FM14
(There is a US Islands designation I can look up if anyone needs it.)

Dates:

10-17 August 2002 (but probably VERY late UTC on the 10th, if at
all)

Bands:

20-10m (including WARC, I hope) using a multiband dipole. 40m is
a possibility if I can get a longwire strung up.

Rig:

Yaesu FT-817 (yes, still QRP even on a trip)

Members:

W3HF and eight-year-old harmonic Matthew. (Matthew may be a
guest operator at times. If he is on the air for a QSO, please
welcome him.)

Contact Info:

W3HF CBA or w3hf@arrl.net

Note that I probably won't have internet access while on the trip.
There is a phone at the beach house--if anyone really wants it, I can
provide it in advance.

QSL Route:

via W3HF (direct, bureau, or eQSL)

Special Note:

I will send a special QSL to the 070 member who contacts me on the
most bands during this trip.

If there are any other questions, please contact me.

Steve

Hi Demetre,

as far as I know, Tunisia doesn't belong to the CEPT-Countries, but
everybody who wants can work from the clubstation, 3V8BB, even those who
don't have a license.

But for an eventual guest-license you should apply at:

Ministere des Transports et Communications
3 bis rue d'Angleterre
Tunis

Don't think you'll get one, never heard or saw any other call on the bands
just, the club-stations operated by hams from Germany and Italy.

070 Club APE Award

N3DQU@...

PODXS 070 CLUB AUGUST PSK31 EXPEDITION (APE) AWARD
09 June 2002

Purpose - To encourage PSK31 operations in the field and to research and
gain practical experience in the portable capabilities of the PSK31 mode, the
PODXS 070 Club offers to the members the August PSK31 Expedition (APE) Award.
The APE Award is offered to any 070 Club member who during the month of
August, 2002 organizes, sets up and operates a portable PSK31 expedition
which meets the requirements listed below.

APE AWARD REQUIREMENTS

Applicant Requirements
1. The applicant for the APE Award must be a member of the PODXS 070
Club and have a current license to operate on the HF amateur bands at the
time the portable expedition takes place.

Site Requirements
1. An APE Award portable expedition site must be at least 20 statute
miles (32 km) from the home QTH of the primary applicant or any members of
the expedition party.
2. The applicant is responsible for obtaining permission to legally
operate a portable expedition from the owner(s) of the site or legal
authorities holding jurisdiction over the site. The applicant shall also be
responsible for any and all costs incurred in the operation of the portable
expedition.

Expedition Requirements
1. The applicant is required to personally take part in the portable
expedition. This includes the transport, set-up, operation, break-down and
return of all equipment to its place of origin.
2. The applicant is free to include any other personnel he wishes to
take part in the expedition, either licensed or unlicensed. The applicant
may, for example, wish to combine a portable expedition with a family
vacation and include those family members who help as members of the
expeditionary party.
3. All communications-related equipment must be transported to the
portable site by the members of the expeditionary party, including radios,
computers, cabling, antennas, antenna supports and power sources. The use of
any pre-existing AMATEUR radio equipment at the portable site is strictly
prohibited.
4. Requirement number three (3) above does not preclude the use of
other man-made or natural structures already existing at the portable site,
including shelter, antenna supports and native power grids.
5. The use of rental equipment for use in the portable expedition is
permitted, provided that said rental equipment is NOT procurred within 20
statute miles (32 km) of the portable site and is returned to its place of
rental at the end of the operation. Items may also be purchased at the
portable site for use by the expeditioniary party, provided that major items
such as radio equipment, power sources, etc. are taken away at the conclusion
of the operation and not left at the site.

070 Club requirements
1. The applicant must announce his/her intentions to operate a portable
PSK31 expedition to the 070 Club membership at least two weeks in advance of
the operation. This announcement must contain the particulars of the portable
expedition, including location, IOTA, USI or other award-related information,
expected start of on-the-air activity, bands to be worked, names of other
members of the expedition, contact information, QSL routes and any other
information deemed pertinent. This announcement may be made by the applicant
via the 070 Club Reflector or by a direct communication (either written or
electronic) to the manager of the APE Award program (see #4 below), who will
then pass on the information to the rest of the 070 Club membership.
2. To be a valid portable expedition for the APE Award, the operation
must:
a. Take place anytime during the month of August (UTC).
b. Make at least 20 two-way PSK31 contacts on the HF amateur bands
(160 thru 6m, WARC bands included) from the portable site. Contacts while
inroute to or from the portable site can not be counted towards this
requirement.
3. Upon completion of the expedition, the applicant must provide in a
timely manner a log of stations worked and a short, informal written
narrative of the expedition, to be submitted to the APE Award Manager. The
narrative should include a site description, equipment used, number and names
of personel participating in the expedition party and any unusual or
noteworthy incidents that occurred during the expedition. (Maybe some
pictures for the website too!).
4.. To apply for the APE Award, send a written request with the required
information (see #3 above) either by regular mail or email (preferred) to the
APE Award Manager, < n3dqu@aol.com >:
Jay Budzowski
109 S. Northview Ave.
New Castle, PA 16102 USA
5. Upon review of the log and written narrative by the APE Award
Manager, the applicant and all members of the expedition party whether
licensed or not, shall receive an APE Award certificate for their
participation. In addition, all 070 Club members whose call appears in the
expedition log shall receive an official 070 Club Attaboy.
6. All applications are subject to the approval of the APE Award
Manager. Applications determined to be inconsistant with the spirit of this
award or the philosophy of the Penn-Ohio DX Society (PODXS) and the 070 Club
may be rejected. The Penn-Ohio DX Society (PODXS) and the 070 Club reserves
the right to modify and/or waive certain requirements for this award as
deemed necessary.

There have been other calls active from Tunisia, so it must be
possible. I worked 3V8DJ in March of last year, an Italian
DXpedition to AF-083. They even worked PSK!

I thought of maybe working a little PSK from there.
Anyone know if a special permit is required to operate from this
country ?

Mysteries of the 070 Club Explained!

N3DQU@...

Every so often we hear from an 070 Club member who wonders why he got his
certificate in the mail but not his endorsements, or visa versa. For those
newcomers to the 070 Club and those members who have often wondered but were
afraid to ask, here is a brief description of the 070 Club organization and
what happens with your applications.

The 070 Club is a PSK awards program sponsored by the Penn-Ohio DX
Society, a very small (4 regular members, 4 honorary members as of this date)
HF-oriented club located in western Pennsylvania and more commonly known by
its
initials PODXS (properly pronounced PO-DIX), not to be confused with the
Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin, a very fine weekly DX newsletter published by Tedd
Mirgliotta, KB8NW.

The 070 Club itself is run by two guys, both named Jay. For convenience
sake and to avoid any confusion, they will be referred to by their callsigns
KA3X and N3DQU.

KA3X is the manager of the 070 Club and holds certificate #001. He is the
Top Banana and takes care of the new members, issues 070 Club member numbers,
member certificates, Ragchewers certificates and QSO upgrade spots (e.g. 50,
100, 150, etc). KA3X's email address is < JHudak3rd@aol.com >.

N3DQU holds certificate #010 and takes care of the 070 Club website and
all of the information placed therein. He also takes care of the 070 Club
reflector, issues the endorsements (e.g. Aloha, Lower 48, Hot Dog!, etc.) and
often spends his
off hours thinking up new ones just to keep you guys busy! N3DQU is also the
chief contest manager and takes care of such things as the PSKFest (with much
appreciated help from N6YIH/7) and the Three-Day Weekend (TDW), which is
coming up this June btw. N3DQU's email address is < n3dqu@aol.com >.

If they are lucky, KA3X and N3DQU may see each other once a month. There
is no central database and no meetings to conduct 070 Club business. Almost
all correspondence regarding the 070 Club is passed between the two via the
internet, and each mails out the respective items that they are responsible
for to the members. For example, if a member puts in for an upgrade to the
300 QSO level and also applies for an Aloha endorsement, then the 300 spot
will be mailed out by KA3X and the Aloha endorsement will be mailed out by
N3DQU.

For best results, please send your applications and requests to the person
responsible for that particular item. If you send a QSO upgrade to N3DQU for
example, your request has to be forwarded to KA3X and may result in a delay.
By the same token, if you send an endorsement request to KA3X, then he must
forward the information to N3DQU, once again possibly resulting in a delay.

So you can see that it is quite possible to receive your upgrades,
certificates, and endorsements all at different times, even though you had
applied for them at the same time. Also, please note that when there are many
endorsements to be sent out for 070 Club member participation in a PSK event
like the PSKFest, TDW or TARA Rumble, then the turnaround time for
certificates and endorsements will also be longer until things get caught up.

There are also two new programs sponsored by the 070 Club that are worth
mentioning here. The first is called the "Loyal Order of the Narrow-Banded
Phaseshifters" or LONP for short and is run by 070 Club member K8IJ. The
other program is of interest to those who are into the SWL part of our hobby
and is run by another 070 Club member, KF4FHS. Information on both of these
awards along with all the 070 Club information can be found up on the 070
Club website at < http://hometown.aol.com/n3dqu/podxs070.htm >.

The 070 Club is open to all amateurs interested in the PSK31 mode who are
licensed to operate on the HF bands. Operation of this awards program is made
possible thru the support of the Penn-Ohio DX Society and 070 Club members.
Thank you for your participation and enthusiasm! 73 de Jay N3DQU.
