Re: 070 Sprints...

Bernie,

The problem I have with the concept of "local time" is that suppose I work a
station on the East Coast before the contest starts. Counts for him, but
not me. Then, when the contest starts for me I have to work that station
again if it is to count for me. That station may be busy working others, or
may not want to work me since I am already in the log. Kind of defeats the
purpose that way. Basically I might have to end up working a station twice
to get the contact to count for both of us!!

Even if awards are given by time zone I am afraid I don't see the logic.

Rick

Subject: [070] Just what we NEED a Contest

I would like to know if anyone would like to do a 1 hour Sprint every
month?

Here is what I have in mind.

1 hour (different start time each month)
1 band (different each month)
Different week night each month (i.e. 2nd Monday, 2nd Tuesday...)

Every QSO counts as 1 point. THAT’S ALL THE SCORING!
Just report the total points/QSO's. SEND NO LOGS!

The winner would be posted on the Web Page as King of the Hill for the
month. NO AWARDS...

Sample Schedule:
June 6 meters everyone starts at 0000z Monday night
July 10 meters everyone starts at 0100z Tuesday night
Aug 15 meters start 0200Z Wednesday night
Sep 20 meters start 0300z Thursday night
Oct 40 Meters start 0000z Monday night
Nov 80 meters start 0100z Tuesday night
Dec 160 meters start 0200z Wednesday night
Jan 80 meters start 0300z Thursday night
Feb 40 meters start 0000z Monday night
Mar 20 meters start 0100z Tuesday night
Apr 15 meters start 0200z Wednesday night
May 10 meters Start 0300z Thursday night

Well what you think??
If you like the idea should we change the start time?
I left out the weekends as all the other events are on the weekends.

This is just something to do and will help me get the LONP, 88 and some of
the other awards.
We will have a good time and place to look for other members and EVERY QSO
counts even the non-070 members.

Well ?? I would like to hear FOR and AGAINST and any comments.

Thanks
SteveD

Hello Jack,

We had a discussion about this in the 40 meter Sprint, and I will
repost an excerp from an email that Jay N3DQU sent on this subject. I
hope
this will help to explain why that Local times are used.

73, Bernie / KF4FHS

We HFer's are so used to
using GMT for everything, that it seems almost sacreligious to base
an HF
contest on local time, but here is my reasoning on the subject, see
if it
seems logical to you.
If we start the 40m sprint at say 0000z, then for those on the east
coast
this would be great time, 2000 to 0200 local. The long skip would be
opening
up on 40m and we would not have to lose much sleep in the bargain.
East Coasters
would probably have a pretty good time in the sprint.
But look at them poor guys over in Europe...starting at 0000z is like
0100
local time in Germany. Doesnt really strike me as fair that Erika &
Co. has
to spend a sleepless night staying up to play in the sprint. The band
would
start to go south for them halfway thru the contest as the sun
started to
come up in the east and the f layers died out. Not a fun time for our
members
across the pond and Erika would look like heck come the morning!
Now let's take a look at the guys on the left coast. For them,
starting at
0000z is 1700 local time or thereabouts, hardly a peak time on 40m.
They
might manage a few good hops towards the end of the sprint, but for
most of
the contest the props will be short for them. I really dont think the
left
coasters will have much fun either and N6YIH will start boo-hooing
again abt
how they are always getting shortchanged out in their part of the
world :o)
So that is my rationale for basing the sprint start time on local
time. We
made the sprint 6 hours long to try and overlap the propagation
across a
greater distance, so there is a good chance of working Europe fm the
east
coast and Hawaii from the west. Also, you do not have to log in local
time,
just work the contest starting at 2000 local time and log in zulu as
usual.
Because of the short time, a sprint is pretty tough to make it fair
for
everybody. I think basing the start time on local time is the best
way of
achieving this...Jay N3DQU

concerned about each time zone starting/stopping in PSK contests at
similar
local times. In the case of the 80 meter sprint coming up this
September,
I understand that the number of states worked are multipliers times
the
number of QSO's.
States are a bit closer on the east coast than they are out

I feel that gives us NW hams 3 hours to work as many east
coast states
as we can and it gives the east coast hams 7 hours to do the same
because of
shorter paths to other states. I am not sure why the start time
is "local"
in each time zone. During the 40 meter sprint many stations could
have

070 Sprints and the Rolling Start from Jay N3DQU

Member feedback is always welcome with regards to 070 Club programs,
because without member participation, there wouldn't be an 070 Club. We might
not always use your suggestions or ideas but they won't go unnoticed either.
And while you don't get any bonus points for asking questions or making
comments, we won't penalize ya either hi! So here is pretty much the thinking
behind the 070 Club Sprints. Keep in mind that we are not big-time contesters
looking to maximize scores or Q-rates. Our only goal is to try and make the
events fair and equitable for everyone.

When the idea of hosting a single-band sprint first came up, the hardest
part was trying to figure out how to level the playing field with a contest
window that is only a few hours wide. The physics of ionospheric propagation
being what they are, if one were for example, to organize a four hour,
single-band sprint and chose a single contest window based on UTC for the
entire world, then chances are that perhaps only 6 of the 24 time zones would
be blessed with decent propagation for any given band while the rest would be
plain out of luck. It doesn't matter which four hours you pick either, there
just doesn't seem to be a good universal starting point when it comes to a
single-band, sprint-type contest. So that is why when KF4FHS and I worked out
the rules for the single-band sprints, we decided to go with the "rolling
start" rather than a single UTC start time. With a rolling start, everyone
gets to work the bands when they are pretty much at their best and no one
gets shortchanged, propagation-wise. We also decided to widen the contest
window to 6 hours in an effort to get the signals across the big ponds and
hopefully add to the SPC count.
Now 'tis true that Europe and the East Coast enjoys a higher population
concentration and the SPC's are alot closer to each other than say the
Northwest of US and points west, so the scores will naturally be higher in
those time zones, but don't forget that in the low band sprints, you are not
competing worldwide, but within your own time zone. 'Tis also true that
getting Top Dog for the Left Coaster may be harder than for someone in Europe
or the East Coast, but not an impossible feat and a very worthwhile goal in
itself.
So that is the reasoning behind the 070 Sprints and the rolling start. We
have had only one sprint so far, that being the 40m Firecracker Sprint held
in July, so the jury is still out as to whether the rolling start is better
than a single, universal start time. But we did have very good participation
with 29 entries from seven different time zones, not bad for a contest that
was conceived, fleshed-out in a matter of hours and announced only two days
before the event was to take place! We are pretty flexible however and willl
rearrange the furniture as needed. The 80m Sprint will be held September 20
and if the 40m Sprint is any indication, it will be a good one! 73 de Jay

Hi y'all,

We got back from the APE just fine. And we had a great time.

But then I had to run off on bidness again. This time to NY and DC. We
took off tonight right over the pentagon and it was a real strange feeling

I'm home for a few days and will catch up on email, APE logs and print the

Thanks, Jay. Lots of good information on that link, especially if you want to keep a low profile with antennas.

Hi All,

The 070 Club website is now firmly established at <
http://www.podxs.com/html/070_club.html >. Steve N6YIH has done a
remarkable
job of learning the ins and outs of html while moving the webpages over to
the podxs.com server, my hat's off to him! The 070 webpages in particular
have grown quite a bit in the past few months, so it was no easy job to
make
the transition. As of now, Webmeister N6YIH is directly responsible for
all
of the PODXS/070 webstuff except for the following pages:
Alpha List - N3DQU
Member Standings - N3DQU
Sprint pages - KF4FHS
SWL pages - KF4FHS
LONP - K8IJ
Any questions, queries, comments or complaints regarding data posted on
the PODXS/070 website, please send an email to the person(s) responsible
as
listed above. My thanks to all who have helped to make the 070 Club the
greatest PSK organization on the planet! 73 de Jay N3DQU.

Well, I THINK I am sending out the last of the USA cards tomorrow.
If anyone doesn't receive the card within the next week or so, please
contact me and I'll send another one. I lost some log file updates last
night (which showed which cards went out yesterday), so I may
have made some mistakes.

Some of the DX cards are also going out tomorrow. I'll post another
message later when the last of those go out.

Note that these QSLs are the ones that are going direct to all 070
members I contacted. All other DX will go via bureau, and other
domestic will be sent upon request.

73,
Steve
