Re: Hamstick

Dick Thompson <wb0dul@...>

I have been using hamsticks for almost a year. (Well, I have several actual "Hamsticks" and a few that are "look-alike hamsticks), and I can't say anything bad about them. I have used them as a base station antenna and as a mobile antenna attached to a quick disconnect on a mirror mount type of assembly.

I have not used them as a rotatable dipole as some folks have, but I have talked to guys and gals that were using them as dipoles and they claimed they were great.

As for the license plate mount of which you mentioned, I'm not familiar with that.

If you'd like to see how I have mine setup as a base station antenna and how I've attached the mount to a support post for an aluminum cover over my rear porch/redwood deck, you can e-mail me at my e-mail address below and give me your direct address and I'll send you a photo of how I have it attached. The antenna looks at the aluminum cover over my deck as a roof of a huge vehicle and as a result, the ground plane is great.

Dick

Greetings all,

Any of y'all had any experience with the Hamstick antenna? And any comments
about their "license plate" mount or the dipole mount?

Re: Hamstick

w1sql@...

Chas,
I use them on my truck, a Chevy suburban, and they work great. I
drilled and mounted a quick disconnect stud in to a place that goes into my
trailer hitch receiver. This works pretty good but much of the antenna is
blocked by the truck. I also have a 90 pound mag mount that I use, on the
truck, when stationary. On my boat, I have used them in a dipole mount and
that seems to work OK too, though it suffers from a lack of height as any
dipole would at 16 feet. I need to add a better ground plane in the boat,
this winter, so that I can use a single vertical. Also, keep in mind that
you can find a number of knock off versions. I have one hamstick and many
from http://www.transeltech.com/. The hamstick, that I have, requires that
you break it down by removing the whip element with an allen wrench. The
transel's use a regular open end wrench but require an allen wrench to tune
the whip. I tend to lose the tiny allen wrench but always have a ready
supply of open face wrenches when I need them and once tuned you have little
use for the allen wrench. In a nut shell it is an inexpensive way to get
simple antenna for portable or mobile work. I even made a couple of two
element beams with them. One was for 40 meters but I never got beyond
receive testing with it. Believe it or not it did show some directivity at
only 15 feet above the ground.

If you have specific questions about them, drop me an email either on the
group or direct.

GL,
Joe

PODXS Class of 2002

AA8QQJMauch@...

Hi All,

Each year the president of PODXS is blessed with the chance to hand pick a
few hams to become Honorary PODXS members. These selections are based on
their (non-monetary) contributions to the art of amateur radio. This may or
may not be associated with PODXS or the 070 Club. As this years president, I
am proud and happy to announce the Class of 2002. They are:

KF4FHS - Bernie Leonard
for his management of the Low band sprints and the 070 SWL program

and

K8IJ - Charlie Trice
for his management of the LONP Award and his sage input to the rest
of the PODXS gang.

Thanks to both of these Amateurs for their commitment and dedication to this
great hobby. They will each receive a Certificate of Membership and are
afforded all the rights of Honorary membership in the Penn-Ohio DX Society.

73 to all, and thanks again to Bernie and Chas,
Jay - AA8QQ Pres. PODXS
