Scottish endorsement clarification

N3DQU@...

Keeping in mind G4UCJ's explanation of the UK licensing structure, here is
a clarification of what you need for the Scottish endorsement:
Five QSO's required:
1. GM0KWW
2. GMx (any suffix)
3. MM0CBL
4. MMx (where x= 0, 1,2,4 or 5)
5. MM3
You do not have to work one each of MMx, just one of your choice.
According to George MM0CBL, they no longer issue GM prefixes, so now you
should be hearing a lot more MM's out there. The MM3 prefix is for the new
entry level classs called the "Foundation License" and they are only limited
to 10w out I think. According to Sean, an M1 license is good only for 50 MHz
and above, unless it is a specially issued contest call. Is that correct?

Re: New endorsements up

DL2AYL@...

Jay,

<<GM0KWW, GM, MM0CBL, MM (0,1,2,4 or 5), MM3 (i.e. You must work GM0KWW and
MM0CBL in addition to working another GM and MM).>>

How is that meant, we can't work MM1 or GM1, I'm not so sure about the
numbers 2 and 4 but I never saw any MM1 or GM1 on HF-bands.

Just a reminder that we have a new award program called "August PSK
Expedition" or APE for short. The purpose of this award is to learn abt the
portable capabilities of PSK31 by getting those members who are
portably-inclined out in the field during the month of August. In the
process, expedition members earn a nice piece of wallpaper and 070 members
who show up in the log get an attaboy. Info on the APE program can be found

Ernest Mills <emills@...>

Hi Joe,
I must thank you very much for the explanation of this insidious virus.
The was you described it is indeed exactly the way it happened. Although
everybody involved has been very good there were one or two who felt I
probably did not download the latest defs or that I had disabled Norton
myself but I know I had not :)
It also shut down some of the windows utilities as well. For instance I
decided at one point to delete Norton since I could not get in to it, but
the Add/Delete Program Files would not open. I also got the feeling that
the original virus I got transmuted itself after disabling Norton etc as
there were three different "carriers" (the subject line was different in
each case) but each carried the same various.
Anyway, thanks also for your tip on Zone Alarm. I will certainly look
into that.

keep in touch Joe, 73 Ernie

Ernie,
Glad your getting this all working again and no need to apologize.
The virus that you caught is particularly nasty because it does disable,
not
only, Norton but also most other antivirus programs, that are on the
market,
before it goes to work and it makes it difficult to re-installed your AV
programs. I recently had a customer who had the same virus attack them and
we had to install another AV program and rename the AV executable just to
get the virus off the server and the servers are still not 100% but the
virus is gone, as far as we can tell. Now, I don't normally go out of my
way
to recommend too many things, unless asked, but I think this may help some
people and I need to do something to try to cut down on some of these
attacks that have been growing in number over that couple of months. The
one
thing that saved me from getting that virus is a program called Zone Alarm
Pro from Zone labs. WWW.zoneloabs.com. It has a feature that renames
potentially dangerous attachments so that they can't easily be run. In the
last week alone, it has saved my system at least 20-25 times. Just last
Wednesday I woke up to 7 attacks overnight between 11pm and 6 am. All
attachments were renamed by Zone Alarm before they ever made it to the
Norton AV level.

GL and glad your back online,

Although completely out of my hands, I must apologies to any and all 070
members who might have recently received a particularly nasty virus that
came via my computer and then used my email address book and mailed out to
everybody in it. It has taken me 3 days so far to get back to a normal,
clean system. Yes! in the end I had to reformat the system drive and am
even
now still rebuilding my programs and files. I will not be entering ANY
address' in my address book for quite some time until I feel this bug has
run its course. For those who asked, and there were many, yes I did have
Norton 2003 running at the time and I did have it set to check all
incoming
and outgoing mail but the first thing this bug appeared to do was to
disable
Norton and also a few important windows utility files then it mutated into
3
carriers all containing the same virus. I got a lot of helpful email off
you guys and gals and I must also thank you for your understanding. I did
not get any irate em!
ail off any of ya! I, know, I know, that can be rectified easily. hi hi

(do
I have your tel number?) to inform you all that I spent a day at the ARRL

W1AW in PSK mode. That was a great experience and I WILL be doing it
again.
I was on 15 meters with not much activity when the W1AW operator spotted
me.
5 minutes later the electromagnetic flux I was throwing out to the world
was
second to none. It is great working a pile up. I will brush up on working
PSK split next time :) As soon as I get photos developed I'll post em! on

Re: Apologies

Richard B Drake

Ernie,

At my location Norton 2002 trapped and quarantined every instance
of that virus. I think I had 13 copies of it in my Quarantine
folder. That particular virus was only discovered on Jun 17, and
Symantec distributed the "Live Update" definitions for it on June
19. So, my guess is that either you didn't "Live Update" or you
were very unlucky and actually contracted it sometime before June
19. That was a close call so since then I have been manually
downloading the "Intelligent Updater" version of the definitions
which Symantec posts on its Website daily. "Live Updates" are only
distributed weekly usually on Wednesdays.

Re: FD Success stories??

Hey Jay and All,

I used a TS-430s that I powered with a deepcycle marine battery and used a
pent. 120 laptop with a garden tractor battery. I was really surprised that
the laptop drained the tractor battery as much as it did, even with all the
power saving stuff turned on, I don't think it would have went much farther.

I flung a 40 meter dipole up in the trees, and no Jay, I didn't use an
htx-202 for a counter weight, you're the only feller that I know who would
confess to that :-)

Our contesting, to say the least was very laid back, the xyl got hooked on
PSK and is now waiting on the next test session so she can upgrade to
General, and we got the two friends we stayed with hooked on Ham radio in
general and now they are both syudying for their Tech license, so I guess
you could say it was a success.

With APE coming just over the horizon, would like to hear what kind of
power setup the battery heads used last weekend, both for the rig and the
laptop...Jay N3DQU.
