Date

APE -- in December

Peter Baskind <pbaskind@...>

OK,

I couldn't get anything going for APE this month, but it looks like I'll
have something up for December.

I have reservations for 5 nights on Ambergris Caye (NA-73), Belize, in late
December. Operation, though, will be contingent on successfully getting a
V31 call, as Belize is not a CEPT signatory.

I would imagine I would be active on 20, 10, and 6 (if open). 6m would be
mostly voice, I assume. I don't have Belize on 6, so I would imagine a lot
of folks don't either. It's an easy single-hop E to the Southern US -- and
there may even be F2 around Christmas, if the SFI holds out.

Gotta get my paperwork to Belize City. I won't be in the City long, so I'll
have to do it by remote control. Wish me luck.

as PODXS 070 Club 80m Autumn Sprint. I think he might of been looking at it

Hi Gang-

I just worked a "mobile" warbler . . . Oleg UR4QI/m is calling CQ on 15
meters . . . he says he is in a "ZIL-131" ex-miltary vehicle! I worked
him from K3VOA here . . . just a little lunch time activity as the bands
show some sign of recovery here.

APE Announcement: August 23 - 31 BWCA canoe expedition

Don Snider

Hi All,

I'll be operating PSK31 from the Boundary Waters Canoe area in Northern
Minnesota from August 23rd through August 31st. Details will be posted
at www.n3mk.com in the next few days. Also, please see last year's PSK31
expedition posted at the web site.

Location: Boundary Waters Canoe Area starting in Ensign Lake
Operators: I'll be the sole operator

Equipment: FT-817, Warbler, Fujitsu Lifebook P, Emtech ZM-2 tuner,
ladder line fed Delta loop in the trees. Solar power provided by
Unisolar USF-11 solar panel. Batteries: Still working that out.

Bands: My primary operation will be on 20M but I may move around
depending on condx. All bands are possible.

All members of Expedition: Don Snider Sr., Don Snider, Jr., Mary Snider,
Ed Snider, Greg Snider, Bob Bulley, Michelle Bulley.

I'll probably be fishing by day and operating at night so please keep an
eye out for me in the evening hours on 20 meters. I'll also try some
early morning operation if conditions are good. I'll bring the warbler
with me for those who would like to try and make some warbler to warbler
contacts.

Conditions for PSK31 in the BWCA are pretty rugged. Last year rough
portages and water took a toll on my equipment. I lost a hard drive, had
problems charging batteries, and even lost my only pair of glasses in a
lake. Still I managed 17 contacts and hope to make many more this year!

Jim's GAZETTE
Newsletter #127
5 August 2002

Please feel free to forward this newsletter to any and all interested
parties, or to reproduce it in
any publication. All we ask is that you give credit where it is due.

Short Notes: TARA reminds us that Myanmar XY7V will be on in the digital
modes from August 5 through the 22nd. QSL via DL8KBJ. TARA also announced
the first ever 80 meter PSK31 sprint. The Autumn Sprint will run 20 September
2002. Rules at www.angelfire.com/folk/leonards/80mrules.html. Questions
to kf4fhs@ywave.com

Tom KC2GAT, uncovered a US Government site that is looking for hams that wish
to belong to a national disaster communications network. Take a look at
www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/ptech/07/10/sans.ham.radio.idg/. You never know!

Contesting software for PSK? Joe G3ZCZ/VK5WU answered the query without
delay. It's all in Lanlink for Windows at (you guessed it)
www.chariot.net.au/~g3zcz. Thanks for the input, Joe. Looks interesting, as
does the loggimg program you will find at http://pages.cthome.net/n1mm/, a
contribution from Jan WB6VRN. Check them out.

Remember the AIRMAIL mention? Steve K4CJX writes that it is a free package
for use with Winlink2000 (and other maritime com systems). Download it
from www.airmail2000.com. 'It's not rocket science,' says Steve, though he
admits that it is somewhat more complicated than most free software found on
the Internet. But, then, it does so much it's worth the effort. Hi!

Dean W5PJR Emailed the good news about the rains in New Mexico. Since he
lives in Cibolla Forest the threat of fire was never far from his mind until
the monsoon arrived. I can't say I blame him! Anyway, the real purpose of the
note was to chide me about how hard it was to find a spot on the GAZETTE
website where he could click up an Email form aimed at the editor of said
publication. I took the hint and redesigned the first page so that the very
first
thing you see is an EMAIL THE EDITOR menu bar. Click it and you are ready to
fire away. Please do! And, thanks to Dean for the suggestion.

Dean, like many others, noted with appreciation the rapid delivery of his P5
QSL card. They seem to be arriving before 'the ink is dry in the log.' He also
updated his DXCC country count on the GAZETTE. Everybody else joined in, or
so it seemed. While there have been no significant changes in their
ranking, most have moved up a notch or two in total count. The top10 now
covers the 335 to 329 range and the participants (in rank order) are N3UN
Marion, W5ZPA Mike, W2JGR Jules, W5PJR Dean, WX5L Randy, W2UP Barry, WB4UBD
Jim, AA5AU Don, OH2LU Tapani and W4EP Ed. That's pretty
lofty company! Remember, in the GAZETTE world, a country worked is a country
earned. We don't delete deleted countries!

Chen (what'shiscall?-oh yes) W7AY and Goetz DJ3IW engaged in a spirited and
most informative discussion about directional antennas, one-way
propagation, back-of-the-beam signal and reception strength, etc., etc. I
enjoyed reading about these subjects and felt I learned a bit more about a
complicated subject. Then Frank ZL2BR chimed in, the lessons forgotten amidst
the laughter.

In a word, Frank said 'nonsense!' 'I'm always off the back of everyone's
beam. Just check where ZL is on a great circle map from your QTH. And,
distances! W6/7 are easy to work from ZL and they are 11000 KM's from here.
W2 and Europe are 18000!!

So, he announced a new contest-the ZL2BR sweepstakes. 'I will call CQ and
everyone calls me. If you work me on 4 bands I will send a certificate. And if
you work me long and short path on 15 and 20, I will send you a certificate
with a picture of my cats on the reverse side.'

And Frank concluded, 'Ham radio is a veeery serious hobby.' Sure is, my
friend!

When I first saw the '070 Club' mentioned, I thought it must be for senior
citizens like me. I qualified, at least in my mind, with seven years to
spare. Soon
it became obvious that, like many first impressions, this one was wrong,
wrong, wrong! So I went to the website, then, in search of more information
contacted Joe N3DQU. There's quite a story and, yes, anybody from anywhere
can belong, even those over 70!

The 070 Club was founded by the Penn-Ohio DX Society because a few members
(Jay included) got hooked on PSK31. They soon noticed that, except for
rag chewing, there wasn't a heck of a lot for the PSK crowd to do. 'So, we
started out as a free award program by offering stickers for working so many
PSK stations, up to 300. Soon we came up with the idea of offering
endorsements to the certificate for working the lower 48 states, WAC, joining
in the
Rumble, etc. Some of the members earned so many endorsements their
certificates looked like a traveling salesman's suitcase!'

The endorsement titles sound great. Try '30 on 30', '17 on 17' or '12 on
12', for example (whoops! My 750 Q's don't include any of those bands). Or the
'Worked All OZ', 'SV Triband', or the 'China Clipper.' I like the 'Worked
Them All,' idea, but I'm not real sure of the award's intent when it says
ALL. When
is All All? Hi!

The club continues to evolve and now offers more programs than ever, and I
suspect they aren't through yet. They have already passed the 225 member
mark with no end in sight. It's the right idea at the right time.

To join, just go to the website at
http://hometown.aol.com/n3dqu/podxs070.htm. You'll be amazed at what's going
on there. Claiming awards and anyone
of the 17 or so endorsements is as simple as sending an email message to
KA3X. His address is jhudak3rd@aol.com or Jay Hudak KA3X, 212
Beechwood Blvd, Pulaski, PA 16143. Attach your log files as a .txt file and
any requisite QSL image as a .jpg. Jay N3DQU runs the website and he can be
reached at N3DQU@aol.com.

These folks have conjured up a vehicle that fulfills what should, indeed must
be the primary mission of any ham group. It called the HAVE FUN Strategy . .
. and it obviously works! Join up now. Congratulations to all!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the hectic pace continues. We are counting the
days to our final departure for the west coast of Florida on October 3. The
house in NY is sold, the plans complete to move, destroy or distribute all
the stuff contained therein before the October 2nd closing. Even the airline
reservations are in place, and the moving van, and the place in Florida where
most of the stuff will end up. Logistics! I'm good at the game (and so is the
XYL, hi).

But there's some pain here. The radio station is closed, kaput! The coax that
used to run down from the attic is gone and enroute to some flea market
somewhere. Ruthless, that's what it is! But, at the rate with which each day
and week speed by, I'll be on the air from Florida in no time at all! Maybe
even the propagation will improve by then. Look for my booming 30 watts from
the R7000 vertical soon!

Subject: [070] AA8QQ also going APE

Hi All,
It turns out that our August Portable Excursion to the Outer Banks of NC is
not an IOTA island. The map and the IOTA judge say it is part of the
mainland. Oh well, I think I'll still go. Should be QRV from Duck (Dare
County) or Corolla (Currituck County), NC on Sat. the 17th or Sun the 18th of
August. Will be there thru the week. I'll have to work ham radio in with
all the other fun stuff like hang gliding, golfing, swimming, and eating like
a pig. Hope W3HF leaves some of the good QSO's from NC for me.

73,
Jay - AA8QQ

I'll do my best to leave a few lying around for you. :-)

FWIW, Duck Island is listed as part of NA-067. Page 63 of the 11th
edition IOTA directory. Corolla is not, however.
