Re: IOTA & the Outer Banks

DL2AYL@...

Hi Jay and the islands chasers,

The NC island groups are listed as follows:

NA067 - North carolina State East include: Harkers, Hatteras, Ocracoke,
Portsmouth and
islands N and E of Cape Lookout

NA112 - North Carolina State West group include: Bald Head, Masonboro,
Smith, Sunset Beach
and islands west of Cape Lookout.

So it doesn't name Nags Head, it could be one of the smaller islands N, E
or W of Cape Lookout,
but if you say it isn't an island maybe it was never included.
The rules say, the island must be separated from the mainland at low tide
at least by a minimum of
200 meters of sea, measured at the narrowest point.

Dick Thompson <wb0dul@...>

Jay,

You might want to check out www.buddipole.com and also, go to QRZ.COM and look up W3FF, Budd. Then click on his web site and there are instructions on constructing a Buddipole antenna.

It looks to be extremely portable and many back packers are using them. They can be configured to a "V" or "L" or rotatable dipole.

Subject: [070] Portable ops: demis, loops, tips & tricks

Hi All,

(Steve, I was looking for you in FL, too. )

I think this is what the APE was designed for, discussing portable operation.

I tried my old reliable field built vert, but it only scored me the 30 m QSO.
All the rest were on a 20 m demi-quad. I've used demi-quads a lot in the
past, running QRP and working VK's, JA's, & KH6's with them answering my
CQ's.

For the uninitiated, a demi-quad is just a single band, full wave vert loop,
usually mounted vertically, a' la a Quad. When I build a demi in the field,
the only two things I worry about is the length, and making sure one side is
semi flat, usually the side I feed. If I can get a full quarter wave side
flat, great! If not, no sweat. At times I have corner feed them. I've had
this configuration work with as little as an eight wave flat side across the
top, suspended by PVC pipe, and every thing else just drooped as it may. It
seems that as long as it's relatively clear of ground (or grounded
structures), it works. I make the feed point spreader from PVC pipe. PVC is
excellent at HF, easy to cut with a Leatherman type saw or portable hacksaw,
and it's cheap, too. I connect the loop wires to the end of the coax with
alligator clips, and no matching network. It's not necessary. Get the
length right and it'll match up very close. These loops just love to work.

This time out, I didn't get a single answer to my CQ's, even running 65 watts
on PSK! I had to call the stations that I did work several times to get a
QSO and I only got to finish three of them. The other two busted before
completion, none resulting in rag chews. All this makes me pretty sure Steve
did something to upset the prop gods of the Outer Banks. Thanks Steve, hi.

As with every trip I go on with ham radio, I learned a few lessons. Isn't
that what portable operation is all about? Here are a few things I'll be
trying in the future.

1). Pre-cut all my loops and wind them on the spools that the wire came on.
Bend and mark the half way point on the loop and start winding from there.
Should be ready to use the following time. Maybe even attach the plastic
spool at the center point so it doesn't get lost next time. (I dropped one
of them off the top balcony this trip.)

2). I have always made my loops from Radio Shack solid hookup wire. Next
time out I'm going use stranded. It should make it easier to rewind onto the
spools.

3). If I make the feed point spacer from a piece of small diameter PVC pipe,
it should stow away into the hole in the center of the hook up wire spool.
Good for storage and no tangles next time out.

Does anyone else use loops or have any hints, kinks, or tips? I'd like to
hear them.

73,
Jay - AA8QQ

IOTA & the Outer Banks

AA8QQJMauch@...

Hi All,
I have a question about the IOTA program. Maybe some of the IOTA chasers
could explain this to me?

I was under the understanding that Nags Head was the first "island" of the NC
barrier islands. On my APE, I drove from the peninsula to Nags Head. I
noticed something that I thought strange. The water that separates Nags Head
from the peninsula seems to have disappeared. There is nothing but dry land
there. No bridge, no sand bar, nada, save for a water hazard in the
Putt-Putt course on the west side of the road. So how does Nags Head qualify
as an "island"? Don't the Brits know about it? Or is this some sort of
Honorary island on the air?, once an island, always an island? What if it
goes the other way and the island disappears under the water? Do they still
call it an "Island on the air"? Or was I misinformed about the whole thing?

73,
Jay - AA8QQ

Re: Portable ops: demis, loops, tips & tricks

Ken Carpenter <w5kec@...>

Hi Jay, and the rest of the 070 gang,

I've used the same setup (full wave vert quad) here for over two years, strung up between two Ozark trees.
I've had excellent results with it, now 99 countries worked on PSK31.

Strung up in a North x South configuration, so it is firing East x West on 20 meters, fed by 450 ladder line into the center of the bottom leg. Making it horizontally polarized. No tuner needed on 20 and 10 meters.
Cut it 71' - 5" total length, gives 17' -10.25" per side.

My only problem is the lines going through the trees get worn by the branches. I even use a pulley and weight system to help eliminate the wind strain.
I'm open for any suggestions on what kind of rope or line to use.

Notes of interest:

3X - DJ6TF, DJ7UC, DK1BT, DL4WK, DL7UFR, DL7BO and DL7DF will operate
as 3XY7C from Guinea from 30 October (evening local time) through
13 November (noon local time). The group plans to operate on
160-6 metres CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31 (they will also make an
attempt in SSTV) with four transceivers, two or three amplifers
and a wide range of antennas. QSL via DL7DF either direct or
through the DARC bureau. The pilot for the DXpedition will be
Bernd, DF3CB (bernd@df3cb.com). Logs will be available during the
DXpedition at http://www.qsl.net/dl7df/3x [TNX 425DXN]

C5 - THE GAMBIA. Juha, OH9MM, is going to celebrate his 30th birthday
(November 28th) with a special Multi/Multi operation (Multi/Single
also considered) from Gambia. The main focus is to operate the
contest, but there will also be some activity before and after the
contest (November 20th through December 1st). Activity will be on
CW/SSB/RTTY/PSK31 on 160-6 meters. Operation site will be near
Banjul and the callsign will be C53M. Juha reports that he has now
10 people to go with him (some not hams). However, he still needs
a couple of CW operators to join them. Juha states The Gambia is
very easy to get to and cheap access, at least for Scandinavian
operators (others are also OK!). If interested, contact him at:
oh9mm@sral.fi [TNX OPDX]

I - Special event station IO6ARI will be activated by ARI Senigallia
on 10-80 metres SSB, CW, RTTY and PSK31 on 5-15 September.
[TNX 425DXN]

IOTA AS-041.Look for JI5USJ/4 and JI5RPT/4 to be active from Oki Island
starting around 1200z on September 20th until around 0000z on
September 24th. Activity will be on 160-10 meters SSB, CW, RTTY
and PSK31. QSL direct to home callsigns or JARL QSL bureau.

LIGHTHOUSE/LIGHTSHIP ACTIVITY...
Michael, VE3WMB (ARLHS # 428), will be activating five lighthouses
on the Island of Grand Manan N.B. during the week of September 1-
6th. Operation will be on or about 14071 kHz as VE3WMB/VE9. PLEASE
NOTE: This will be a 20m PSK31 (QRP) only operation. The list of
lighthouses to be activated are :
Gannet Rock (ARLHS# CAN 192)
Swallowtail (ARLHS # CAN 491)
Southwest Head (ARLHS# CAN 469)
Long Eddy Point (ARLHS# CAN 283)
Long Point (Whitehead Island ARLHS# CAN 644)
Also note that Grand Manan is also an IOTA entity (South New Bruns-
wick Group NA-014), so contacts will also count toward IOTA Awards.
This will be a very casual operation, and the hours may be a bit
sporadic as this is not the primary activity of the trip. Michael
hopes to operate daily from about 11:00-13:00 EST (1500-1700z)
activating a different Lighthouse each day, then perhaps again a
bit later 20:00-21:00 EST (0000-0100z) activating Gannet Rock (He
has a clear view of the light from his cottage). QSL to VE3WMB for
a special card (Callbook/QRZ.com address), via the bureau, or
direct [#10 SASE ($0.65 Canadian Stamp for U.S. addresses) or #10
SAE with 1 IRC appreciated]. [TNX OPDX]
