Enjoyed working some old friends and some new ones in the first leg of the contest last night.  Stayed on past 10 PM EST in hopes of picking up some west coast stations.  Other than Bob - KK6KMU - that I worked on 40m as soon as I got on (about 4:30 PM his time) the furthest west I worked was Ohio.  Maybe it was just Friday night and our west coast friends were busy with other things or maybe it was just bad prop.  Do hope the prop cooperates tonight and I can work some more stations west of the Mississippi.  CU on the waterfall this evening, 73

Re: Club Crisis

K7DWI Art

I am so sorry to hear of these difficulties. I wish I could help, but I am trying to do what I can to keep the club I have participated in and worked for (over 35 years) survive as well.
http://www.swotrc.net/TheSWOTRCHP.aspx
https://groups.io/g/SWOTRadioClub
The Sidewinders On Two Radio Club (SWOT a 2 Meter SSB Interest Group), also has had its ups and downs over the years. We have been blessed with a nice endowment to stay afloat, but time, Silent Keys, changed interests and few big egos have taken a toll.

I have been a NCS, Chairman, Bulletin Editor, Yahoo and Groups.io Moderator and Group Owner and Website Caretaker (hate term Webmaster) on more than one occasion over the years.
Many times I want to walk away from them, but my love of that part of the hobby keeps me suffering and going back to help. This was all done during 2 XYL's, 5 jobs, 2 career changes and 3 home moves.

I knew I was in trouble when I talked to a well-known weak signal operator at a Hamfest and in discussion he said, "What can SWOT do for me?".
When not working 2 Meter Es, Tropo and Meteor Scatter QSO's, I was a longtime participant in a group called PropNet. For 7 years (2005-2011) on 10 Meters alone, I copied 90,000 PropNet PSK31 packets, heard all states, over 30 countries and my transmitted packets were copied in the 10's of 1000's. I wrote 2 papers, multiple overviews. recorded interviews, Blog posts and presentations on my findings. My efforts are just dust in the wind :)  No one, including PropNet would do anything or share with others my efforts.

I suggest the powers that be here get together and make a long term plan and keep it simple. I think SKCC (Straight Key Century Club) has done a fine job keeping interest up.

Another suggestion is to strongly support other groups of like interest (if they still exist).  Together you stand, divided you fall.... and add Fail.
Be inclusive, not exclusive and get others groups to do the same. Tough road in this climate, but hopefully we can salvage a good group in this hobby.
Good luck.

Re: Grids

Jerry and all-
I was just using
Amateur Radio Ham Radio Maidenhead Grid Square Locator Map - http://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php - and came across a feature that seems new...well, new to me anyway.   If you use lookup by callsign, and there is a conflict between what is reported on QRZ.com and the grid Levinecentral computes, it shows both, but the QRZ is shown in red!  Try it by looking up N7JYX.  Very very helpful for those of us chasing grids!

I intend to put the work that I started in python for adif parsing and endorsement checking into a GitHub repo, so anyone can access/contribute to it. What I have right now is just a rough pass at a couple smaller awards as a POC. I’m still trying to decide exactly what format to use for the data, etc.

THANK YOU! to everybody who stepped up. I would love to contribute some time, but between having a job, and being on the board of our local club (and being very active in supporting the club activities), I just don't have any time left to contribute. I will however continue to advertise the 070 club and it's activities whenever I get a chance (e.g. tomorrow for a presentation mainly about WSPR and FT8, where I will shoehorn in a plug for PSK31 :) )

Thanks again,

Karl Heinz - K5KHK

070 Club Revival

Jim K5SP

We can, as a team, make the 070 club better than ever, over the next several months.  A request for volunteers was made, and several responded.  Below is a list that I compiled, and a first cut at team assignments for the resurrection of the club.

Contest Scoring (manual) - W6QE / KK6KMU / KC3EF

Endorsements - N9AVY / WA3WZR

Mailings - N4GBK / KK6KMU

Software/IT - K9DWR / K4RJD / KG5OIB / KG5RMJ

Website - W5DP / K5SP / WA3WZR

Others - W3HF / W9SMR / N7WE

If I left your name out, or you have a skill you would like to volunteer, let me know asap.  Also, if I have placed you on a team by mistake.

One thing we need to start on, besides getting the manual scoring setup, is that everyone that has a current task such as membership, awards, etc., needs to document what they do, and how they do it.  There are many jobs being done that should a member no longer be able to perform, that are not documented to make it easy for a replacement to take on the task, call it an SOP if you wish, but it needs to be done.

With lousy sunspot activity and lack of stations on PSK31 it seems I’m seeing fewer and fewer traces on waterfall.  FT8 and other modes have also contributed to this, IMHO.  Also, seems there has been a decline in endorsements lately.

Will be a sad day  if 070 goes down for the count because I’ve had a lot of fun with it over the 11 or so years as have so many others.  But it takes people to keep it running and the facts are engraved in stone that only about 1 (one) percent of the membership is around to help out; everyone else seems to have the “let someone else do it” attitude. Sad , but true with many different hobbies. With around 2700 members we should have more participation, but I fear that many were just “joiners” who liked to add another club to their macros.

Guess we should hold a wake for PODXS 070 Club in March by all of us putting an idle signal on 14070-14072 for a solid minute, huh ?

I too Jim would hate to see this club fold.  It is actually one of a very few I enjoy.  I have quite a computer background, but all my known skills are very old now and I had NO clue what others were talking about when they addressed what to do.  HI HI  I would be of no help and with declining health I surely would not as I don't even know from day to day if I will be able to get on a radio/computer or not.  I hope out there somewhere in 070 land there are people who have the skills who will help, even if only some until they can retire then help a lot more.

In an earlier posting, Matt indicated that the intentions were to fold the club at the end of this year.   It would be a sad day for all of us if this were to occur.

We can keep the club alive, but we need somethings to happen.  If Matt steps down as he indicated, we need to find a replacement to coordinate all the activities that must occur over a short period of time.  I have had a discussion with a couple of other members, and their desire is to also keep 070 going, one even suggested creating a new club.

If you have anything you can offer to assist in the task of maintaining the club, this includes helping with tasks such as doing the mailings, creating new programs to perform the tasks that are currently being done via the scripts on a server, helping with website, anything you can offer at all, let me know as soon as possible.  If you would like to step up and assume the Executive Director position that would be great.  Until we get the software in place, such things as scoring contests may be done by hand (as it was originally doe).  Even if you think the club is not worth saving, let me know.  I will gladly accept emails at my jinnis @ swbell dot net address with your comments/suggestions/skills, anything at all. We must start now to  get the ball rolling.

I will compile a list of all volunteers, their skills, and hopefully put teams in place to ensure everything is done to keep 070 Club active.

Thanks for your time.
