It happened again !

Jerry N9AVY

Saw LONP endorsements for K9DEB & W8VYM yesterday so I approved them.  BUT nothing showed up on approval list.  This has happened a couple times in last few months.   Probably should have read endorsements more carefully as they may not have been at actual needed numbers.    Or it could be a bug in system.  Just don’t have a clue on this one.

If anyone had an LONP upgrade which they didn’t receive in last few months, please let me know and I’ll do what I can to remedy it.

Thanks  es 73,

Jerry  N9AVY

I had a lot of fun with this one.  I finally figured out the rules and didn't make any dupes. There should be an endorsement for figuring out the rules. hi hi    I got 4 needed contacts on 160 and got my Top Band endorsement and three new LONP.  Looking forward to the next contest.

I list my PODXS number in one of my macros and had a station K1KL ask me today about PODXS  because he was just returning to psk after a few years and saw all of the stations last night calling CQ PODXS sprint.  He seemed really interested and  said he was going to look at the website  Think I got him hooked and hope to see him on the roster soon.

This was fun! I had a chance to get on 80m for an hour or two, but then the neighbor's lights generated a raspy sound that looks a lot like a PSK signal.

The online scorer called my log a check log, with zero points. Not sure what the error is, but it's all in red.

By my scoring though, it was 11 QSOs, 22 QSO points, 10 mults, so 220 points?

Nice to meet you guys!  73,

Been hearing voice on 20/40m for days. Probably some DX stations who are allowed voice in their countries.

Conditions must have been better in FL because I heard lots of FL stations on many occasions during contest. Missed Stan wherever he was, but tripped over John , KC3FL, who is ever present here on my waterfall…always a great signal into Illinois.

One station , not an 070 member, from East Coast was totally wide

Didn’t get any new grids and only managed 2 new LONPs, but that was better than expected.  The higher one goes up the LONP ladder, the tougher they get to work.

My head wasn’t in this contest what with antenna problems on 80m and no 160m antenna as well as Ebay items being sold which I had to stay on top of or the pile of packages gets overwhelming; cleaning out all the business items since retiring. Retirement leaves more time for radio !

Hope everyone had fun in the contest !

Well the last 070 Contest of the decade is in the log and for me it was a good one.  More action than I had in last months Triple Play.  Managed 6 new LONPs and one new grid (outside the contest window - but still an new grid!).  Special thanks to all our newer members who got on and played.  Contests are one of the best ways to build LONP totals.

Day One was mostly 40m at this QTH as we had lots of static on 80.  The T-storm move through overnight (tornado one county over) and then things cleared weather wise.  Day Two was a mix of both 40 and 80 with a surprising number of calls that I had not seen on Day One.  Then last night was kind of cleanup - mostly on 80 for calls I had not worked there.  Did discover that a neighbor had put up some Christmas lights that made some low level QRM on 80, but not enought to block me out.  Hope you all enjoyed as much as I did.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all and may the propagation improve in 2020!

Congrats on DN60 !   Always pays to answer CQ’s from out West either to pick up new grid or just make a new friend.

40m last night was a disappointment for me, but 80m was pay dirt which produced a new 070# for LONP.  That’s 2 so far in this weekend.    Thanks for 80m contact, Rick.

Last night while I was waiting for the second day window to open for the Triple Play Double Header, I opened PSK Reporter to have a look at what was going on on 40m.  To my surprise, it showed a N1 operating from DN60, which is a grid I've been looking for for quite some time.  Always leery of calls that show up wildly outside their ARRL call zone without a /M or /P, I plugged the call into QRZ and sure enough...Vermont location.  Oh well, not unusual.  But on an off chance, I went ahead and answered his CQ.  Turns out he was in Steamboat Springs, Colorado which IS in DN60 and he gave me a report with both QTH and Locator!    Now in the log and in the bank!  It won't count towards Double Header points as it was outside my window, but I almost blew it off and didn't answer his CQ.

Last night's Double Header was kind of slow for me.  80m was much better with lots less static, but on 40m I couldn't see many new ones.  And although others reported luck on 160m, I didn't put up a 160 antenna for this go-round.  Just too old and too tired, even though I wouldn't have had to trudge through snow to do it!  Hi hi. Hopefully tonight a whole bunch who haven't been able to get on yet will get some free time in all the Christmas rush and be able to join in!  Lots of fun for all.  Hope to see you on the waterfall tonight!  REMEMBER - this is the last PSK31 contest of the decade!

40/80m antenna

Jerry N9AVY

Looks like this one may not make it through the Winter.  The “temporary” alligator clips put on back in April have rusted and one of the stainless steel nuts fell off.  A couple of coils  (Butternut HFV-6) were also loose.  Should have done maintenance before it got cold.  My bad.    Biggest problem seems to be that winds this Fall have stretched out aluminum tubling at base and it’s a bit egg shaped.   Also, the formerly white insulators have turned black.

If antenna fails this Winter , I may pull it in garage and rent/borrow a ready-heater so I don’t freeze while making repairs. Crossing my fingers today’s repair job will hold up.  The symptoms a ½ hour ago were the antenna seemed to drop out and lose all signals, but it’s working again now.

If worse comes to worse I have another vertical in garage , but it needs 2” mast to mount it and the silly 1 ½ “ current antenna is mounted on won’t work well  plus  ground here in yard is full of rocks and clay soil is like concrete especially when frozen !  South is starting to look better …

40m wasn’t too good last night here. Made 9 contacts, but my head wasn’t into the contest.  Too much going on here the past few days what with putting almost 100 non-ham items on Eekbay.

Did work one new 070 member (yippee !) which now puts me within 45 contacts of the 1000 LONP mark . At this rate I may reach that goal sometime in 2022, hi, hi !!

Will try to be around tonight after 0100 UTC.

The wider, 15 second signal you are observing is FT4.
It was meant to be a contesting version of FT8.
It is a faster exchange, wider and efficient, but IMHO totally useless for contesting. Not good in a crowded band...... just like FT8.
Nice mode when too many are on FT8 and I want easy pickings.
They are suppose to operate on 18.104 (FT4).
As of this minute (02:40 UTC) on 20 Meters, each 30 second scroll produces about 5 Chinese, 4 JA's, a couple of Asiatic Russians, a KH6 and a ZL or VK.
Depressing. So goes life.

John-
Looking at 18.100 at 19:43 UTC I'm seeing several FT8 traces.  While 18.100 used to be a PSK frequency, it was taken over when FT8 was introduced.  I also see some wider signals that are in the 15 second T/R cycle, and while I'm not sure what they are, they could be some variant of the WSJT-x modes.

If you are looking for PSK, some are now using 18.097.  But mostly, PSKers have just been chased off 17m.

18.100 has been infested by FT8 stations for about the past 2 years, driving off PSK31 stations .
