Couple years ago I read somewhere that all sound cards are not created alike.  Guess that why so many use Tigertronics USB with its own soundcard.

What a contest !

Jerry N9AVY

Haven’t seen this much activity in a PODXS  contest in a while.  Haven’t counted Q’s yet, but did submit logs even thought contest still has a few minutes left. Looks like bands are pretty much milked dry.

The big excitement is that 11 new 070 #s were logged !!!    Getting closer to that big number even though I though I’d be stuck where I was a month ago… can’t always trust those feelings.    This should be encouragement to those trying to add to their LONP totals !!!

What a contest !   Definitely not a big score for me, but better than previous contests.

Thanks all for a great contest !!!

My apologies … did not work you on 20m.   Read wrong date /band in window.    I’ll be back on in a bit.   Darned weak signals are getting on my nerves.  Lost one contact when a KF7 in Idaho  didn’t give his call and had to erase his data.  Managed to recover, but I was all flustered when you called me.

Sure wish some folks would have a clue to contesting.  If I don’t go back with their full call, they ain’t in the log !  Many are giving out their ARRL Section when all we want is state.   Some are dumping full macros… well,  guess they’re trying ….

I’m interested in boosting PSK activity overall, for the selfish and simple reason that if there are more people active on PSK31, then there are more people for me to *talk to* on psk31.

If someone can convince me that making people get 50 psk contacts before they can be a member will boost PSK31 activity more than, say, asking people to have at least 1 psk31 contact in their log, then I would favor the 50 contact threshold.

But I suspect we would be more successful boosting activity with a threshold of 10, or even 1, than we currently are with 50.

Re: PSKfest – Heads Up ! One week away...

Jerry N9AVY

Lowering the membership requires, IMHO, may be counterproductive.  That is, there a many who are “joiners”  who are collecting club numbers to fill up space on their brag lists and probably have no further intentions of participating 070 Club activities/endorsements.

I see a lot of this when working people on PSK who boast 10-10 numbers , but they are giving out 10-10 numbers on bands other than 10 meters.   Giving out a 10-10 number is only valid on 10 meters and no where else. Apparently those people have never read the 10-10 rules for contacts (ten-ten.org).  Unless a 10-10 contact is on 10 meters , IT IS WORTHLESS !

If PODXS can survive a few more years when the sunspot cycle will go to max, there will be more operators using PSK.  I say this because I’ve heard many operators remark that the FT-8 and  JT modes are boring and that they prefer PSK because it’s easier to talk with real people.    BTW,  I don’t always call CQ, but I do “copy the mail “ on those who are actively working PSK.  There are even some OT’s out there in their 80’s and 90’s who still enjoy “real” contacts as well as many newer “kids on the block”.

Just my 2 cents worth…

Hi Jim K5SP,

I always look forward to seeing the PSK activity on the bands the 070 contests and events cause....it's great to see that and personally I know 070 Staff does lots of work with not so much thanks so thanks for all the 070 Staff and you folks do to promote PSK activity on the bands.

Since you brought up about a member needing 7 more contacts to become a member I'm wondering if the 070 staff has discussed these questions:

- Why is there requirements that a to become a 070 member you have to have 50 PSK contacts and 1 confirmed?

- Out of all the other digital mode clubs like EPC, DMC, 30MDG, FH, etc. only 070 requires QSOs prior to becoming a member to become an active 070 member...wouldn't it be better to just let anyone join then get more active with 070 and PSK?

-  Noticed that ALL 070 Contests are open to anyone now....so why not open 070 membership to anyone that just wants to join without having 50 PSK contacts and 1 confirmed?

-  Keep in mind that 50 PSK contacts years ago could be completed in a day or even a few hours but with FT8 taking the front seat for most used digital mode why would you want to limit members that just want to join and now that contests are open to anyone wouldn't that make more sense?

-  I have also noticed that most times I am on the 070 Website that over on the right side of the Home Page "Who's Online" most times there is between over 100 to over 200 guests online looking at 070 so why not open it up for membership to anyone with no hoops to jump....just request membership then hope for more members to increase 070 and PSK activity..?

Again just wondering and it would be nice to see 070 membership numbers and PSK activity on the bands increase so I'm all for 070/PSK.

10-10 Net Int’l  requires a minimum of 10 contacts for membership.  But that is in line with 10-10 and the number “10”.

PODXS could maybe require 70 contacts ???   😊  😊  😊

Don,

These are some great questions.  I would assume the requirement for

coming in with contacts was originally put in place to show a level of

commitment to PSK (probably to weed out "paper chasers" not interested

helping the club as a whole).  That's just a guess on my part, but it's

worth reviewing.  If there isn't a solid reason for it, it might be time

to change it.

The impetus behind opening the contests to everyone was for similar

reasons, so it's a reasonable thing to consider.  Maybe a

modification/combination of both would work instead?  For example,

instead of 50 + a confirmed QSO, maybe just the confirmed QSO.  I don't

think it would be unreasonable to show at least some minimal proof of an

interest in PSK31.  The single QSO would be enough to meet that with a

minimum of effort.

I'd be interested in hearing what more people think about this.

This is one of our most popular contests. In 2016 we had a record 155 logs submitted. Last year that slipped to 65 logs. Last year’s Top Dawg was Pete, NN9K, of Colona, IL, with 214 QSOs.

This was fun! I had a chance to get on 80m for an hour or two, but then the neighbor's lights generated a raspy sound that looks a lot like a PSK signal.

The online scorer called my log a check log, with zero points. Not sure what the error is, but it's all in red.

By my scoring though, it was 11 QSOs, 22 QSO points, 10 mults, so 220 points?
