Chat Room Availability

N9JCA Chris Matthews <chris.n9jca@...>

To ALL 070 Members

Steve W3HF and I N9JCA,have been ironing a few this out.

Would the Membership like to have the added use of a Chat Room from a Zoom Meeting Place, or just use the 070 Chat Room from the .io Group Website?

If you want to check out the SKCC Chat site first, just to see what I'm talking about, that's great, https://sked.skccgroup.com/ the setup here would be about the same.

If you've never used a Zoom Meeting Place:

You can Chat with Audio and Video

See who is Checked In etc

You'd then be able to setup Skeds to collect your needed 070 Certificates etc

If you'd like for this to Happen, You would have to Download Zoom ,from their Website, and Install it on your Computer. There is a Version for Linux, Apple and Windows. Use a Login I.D Number and a Password Window

This Zoom Meeting Place will be setup on a Linux Box, a Dell Optiplex 3820, 500GB HDD,16GB Memory.  If that Computer isn't "fast" enough, I do have a Tower with 1TB HDD and 32GB Memory, another Linux Box, at my Home; and there will be availability for 100 People at a time. If I can, I'll try and run it 24/7; there are other Options as well, and we'll cross those in due course.

I'll let everyone think about it, and I'll get back to you next w/end, Please send me your feed back as to a Yes or a No; to know whether or not, you would like it to be an added addition for the 070 Club

I think when you look at the SKCC sked page you will see that all that are logged in are on the right and there is a place where they can put any info like QRP, or need this or that state or country or whatever they want to put and then to the left on the main part is where everyone talks with each other.  It is constantly used 24/7.

The other day, someone asked, was there a Chat Room available, to setup skeds etc?. Yes there is, it's on the .io Group website, but from what I see, it's rarely used. Someone replied that a different Group has a dedicated Chat Room setup, just for this purpose, and it would be nice to have one setup for 070 Group.

This got me thinking.I have a spare Computer, and I have a Zoom Account.I would be willing to setup this Computer, and dedicate it for an 070 Chat Room. If the Membership, would like this to happen, send some feedback, and I'll see what I can arrange.

Not to take anything away Steve, But that is exactly what you do if I had Zoom setup as a Chat Room

Install Zoom, ( there is a version for all OS ), click on join a Meeting, Enter room I D, enter Password, Done

Just trying to help out

It worked good enough for out Club Meetings, ( during COVID-19 ) so I thought of offering the same setup for an 070 Chat Room

I'd like to ask a fundamental question: Have people tried the groups.io chat room and found it deficient? Or is it just that no one (including me) seems to remember that it's available? After the last interchange, I discovered that I had bookmarked it in my browser the last time it came up, but never think of using it.

Yes, I've heard of Slack, and I've even used Zoom. And nothing against either of those platforms, but everyone on this reflector already is on groups.io. I'll bet that no other platform already has a 100% penetration among our group, so there will be effort in getting people to sign up, and some never will. Before we start suggesting that people create new accounts and/or download new software, let's evaluate what we have. And if it doesn't meet the needs of the group, then we can look elsewhere.

Anyone else familiar with Slack?  We use it for our local club.  Also used by the Indiana Elmers Group.

Can have separate channels for various topics.  Free to use.  Easier to back track and follow topics, i.e. 6M skip.

Not good for file storage, calendar, and some other limitations.

Roger that Dick.  I used Dale's PAR Endfeds back before he sold it to LNR.  Great product, particularly when camping and traveling!  If the SM-50 works as well, I'll be happy.  I'll post here when I'm up and operational on 6m.  We'll sure give it a try.  Hopefully, it won't be too long, but Dale did tell me in an email that they are backlogged despite working 80 hour weeks.  Good to have that much business, but kind of hard on the body long term!

And Oh Yeah! I'm real jealous of that hexbeam.  If it weren't for the HOA......

Hi Rick,

i have been monitoring 6 also, but have not seen any activity other FT8.  I went to high school with Dale Parfitt back in the good old days, hi hi.  We were in the high school radio club and he be came an engineer for Avanti Antennas when he finished college and then started his own company.  We may want to try 6 some time, but I don't know if ground wave will get that far.  I have a hexbeam up at about 28 ft.

Re: 2020 e-skip season soon!

Frustrated with propagation, I've been looking for some new area of ham radio that I don't have much experience in, and I'm starting to get excited about learning more and doing more on 6m this season.  Yes Art, you are right!  Es is supposed to be much better when the Sun is quiet.  So it should be a great season for doing more.

I've been using an M2 6M HO Loop in the past and while it works, I thought I'd treat myself to something better.  I'm in an HOA so no beam or tower is permitted.  But our lot does back onto wetlands (we transplants call it "swamp") to the west and north so as long as I can hide something below the roof line I should be OK.  After much searching (including eHam reviews) I ordered up a SM-50 Stressed Moxon from Dale Parfitt of PAR Electronics.  It's small in comparison to a 2 element beam, but supposedly does almost as good.  For a rotator I already have an Arm-strong and a rope - hi hi.  I'll let you know how it works out.  Should be fun!

I tried FT-8 and quickly became bored.  I'll try to avoid it if I can.  In the past on 6m its been JT-65 and MFK144 with only a few PSK31.  Sure would like to work a bunch of 070ers on 6m PSK31 this season!

6 Meters is open tonight here in Southern Oregon.
Best opening of the season. All I am seeing now (FT8 of course) is Southern California.
10 Meters is still going strong.

I plan to play in the 3-Day Weekend and concentrate on 10 and 6 Meters and listen on 15, 20 & 40 as time permits.
I was very disappointed when 070 ended their June VHF(Hi-Band??) Contest. Of course FT-Crazy-8s started its takeover the next year.
The following week is the 10-10 Open Season PSK Event and am really keeping my fingers crossed someone shows up.

Not optimistic, but I am a glutton for punishment.  Hope someone is there.

Anyone with operating Hi-HF, VHF Weak-Signal should know that Es love a quiet Sun. We should have a great year on Es.

Hope we connect. Hate getting on FT8/4 because no one is home.

Today is the 99th anniversary of a tremendous solar storm that caused major electrical related problems on May 15, 1921.  See link:

Been frustrated with trying to figure out why fldigi on my RPi 4B keeps freezing when running psk31.  Happens with latest v4.1.12 and with v4.1.09.

Hopefully will solve soon and be back on the bands.

Now the FT8 and FT4 signals have strayed up the band.   Thought I had a contact with N9JCA, but it was in the middle of one of those FT8 sigs.
I've moved up to 10.142510   Will play for a little longer.
