Jim,

Some Kenwoods  (my TS690S for example) have a mercury battery to keep memory alive. Mine is a CR2430, about the size of a US quarter, with solder tabs, located d-e--e---p  behind front panel.  Been several years since I did a lobotomy, but, full instruction on the www.

While it's an admirable thing to get your backup rig to a new ham, you should have found another backup rig. Have a TS-570S as a backup rig here, but trying to get it to run with HRD and a Signalink USB has been a nightmare. Not even sure if Signalink is a good one because I bought it from Ebay when the prices were cheaper (most are going for around $129 w/o shipping). If we lived closer (like local) I'd loan you my 570.

I did suggest AVVID, Clif is somewhere in TX, while he's exclusive to Kenwood, but I think he only does VHF/UHF rigs these days. Shipped him my TS-850SAT a few years ago and he did a great job on it.

Hope you can get back on air soon !!!

Well, I knew I would regret selling my backup rig to a new ham who had little, and could afford less.

I guess my TS-570D that I purchased in January 1999 has decided to give up the ghost.  I may have hurt the finals somehow, and can only get about 12 watts maximum out of the rig.  I have done a complete reset, and get the same result.  While testing today, I was talking to Jerry, N9AVY, and the waterfall went completely black in the middle of the qso.  The only way I could recover it was to power down the rig and bring it back up.

So, I don't think it is feasible to operate that thing now, and have no backup radio.   If anyone has seen a similar problem, and has some ideas for me to check, speak up, please.  Really want to find an answer prior to TDW next week, hate to miss out on that.

There seems to be a relatively decent 10 and 12 meter opening right now. Anyone game for a try I will be on 10 Meters 28.120  at 2120Z

Just snagged W5I, special event station at Perrin Air Field in Sherman, TX, on 20M.  Very strong signal in north central Indiana.  Now running at 14071.94 at 16:55 UTC.

Played golf in Sherman, never been to the airfield.  Check their webpage on QRZ for more info.
