Bob & Stan,
Thanks for doing the APE and for the nice APE certificate! It will find a place of prominence on the shack wall.

Stan, W9SMR and I would like to thank everyone who worked us!  We had a great time and enjoyed every one of the 202 total QSOs.  In spite of the current poor propagation, a record 20 070 APE Hunters bagged us on three or more bands, and have nice certificates coming in the mail.  We also enjoyed QSOs with many POTA hunters, had a number of POTA Park-to-Park QSOs and several Park-to-Lighthouse QSOs (it was International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend).  As Stan likes to say, it's not the propagation, it's the participation - thanks so much for yours!  I've posted our "Tall Tales" report which includes pictures, log, and a listing of the certificate winners in the "APE Tall Tales" folder in the Files section.  Thanks again.

I know with my ICOM 7200 the audio input levels are different for the different bands.  I need more audio input at 40 meters than 20 meters.  I'm always checking my ALC meter.

Re: PSK Setup - Was PSK Assist

I had a conversation with an ARRL OO a few yrs ago and he told me the best way to adjust your drive was to run the rig wide open at full power and to adjust your audio drive to  be at your desired output  power.  I have since used this method and my  IMD meter reads between -32 and -34 dB most of the time, plus I get similar reports from other stations.  Doing it this way, you would probably have to apply enough drive to put out 80 or 90 watts before you started to show any ALC.

More good info Steve!  I didn't know about the FT817.  Absolutely no substitute for on-air confirmation of your setup.  I've asked people to do a screen capture of what my trace looks like and email it to me.  The other thing I do is run an "IMD Meter by kk7uq" anytime I'm operating  PSK 31 or 63.  Unfortunately they are out of production now, but some come up on QRZ or eHam classifieds from time to time.  Not only do they give you a numerical readout of your signal's IMD, but they also take it off the air; not off your coax.  And they have an audible alarm and flashing light if something goes wonky and the IMD goes more than -20!  I've had mine alarm a few times and otherwise I wouldn't have known something was amiss.

Rick -

Another exception is the Yaesu FT817. When I adjusted it to zero ALC, I had no power out. "One bar" of ALC resulted in full power output, almost five watts! Multiple bars of ALC caused distortion. I don't remember what the setting was for the 857.

I think the message is that the ALC indicators on different brands of radios mean different things, so there really isn't "one size that fits all." Unless you can find someone with exactly the same setup as yours, it's best to calibrate with on-the-air signal reports. These should be when you have a decent signal path (so S/N isn't degraded) and with a station that can tell the difference between overloading of his receiver and distortion in your transmitter.

There is an exception that I know of.  If you are running an Elecraft K3, K3S, KX2, or KX3 they use a different method of power/ALC control.  The proper setting for these rigs on digital modes is 4 bars of ALC showing, 5th bar flickering.  Don't know if this applies to the new K4 or not.  Details here. http://www.w3fpr.com/download_files/Digital%20modes.pdf

Parks on the air

I’m working Parks on the Air today from K-3051, Ray Roberts Lake State Park in Texas.   At about 17:30, I’m going to try some PSK on 10 meters.   I will move to 12, 15, 18 and then to 20 every 15 minutes, or so.

I know conditions are poor today, but I might as well give it a try!    I did get an SSB contact on 15 about an hour ago.

I'm curious if anyone uses Discord?  I belong to a couple of ham groups that use this to keep in touch.  It's actually nice to be able to jump into a ham group to ask questions or connect when not on the radio.

Here is another website that might help'

http://n4ser.org/2014/psk-assure-clean-signal/

For those rigs that don't have an ALC meter, zero ALC is just past the point where the rf out starts to drop as you decrease audio drive.

Yes, ALC should be at 0, or turned off.   Here is a link to some tips for PSK: http://www.arrl.org/news/10-tips-for-the-psk31-digital-mode

Not here, but this groups.io platform provides you with a spot to jump in and ask questions to the membership.  We do have chat capability, but it is rarely used due to chat being a real-time application.  If no one is in the chat room, there is no one to talk to.
