Re: Christmas Run 2020 - "Operating Event"

Jim (and others) -

There are lots of uses of CQ with a qualifier that don't imply a contest. "CQ DX" doesn't mean it's a DX contest. "CQ Hawaii" typically means you want to work a KH6, not that it's the Hawaii QSO Party. Lots of nets call "CQ <fill in net name> net".

I think the "proof" is in the QSOs. There's nothing actually wrong with a contest-type QSO ("599 and thanks"). But the "suggested" exchange of Christmas greetings should indicate it's not a contest, especially if the content of the QSO included an explanation something like "the members of the 070 club are each trying to work 25 other stations to offer Christmas greetings."

In retrospect, and unfortunately thinking through this in public (on the reflector), I wish I had tweaked the dupe rule to state "25 different stations (same station on different bands is still a dupe)." That would have been a little more consistent with "sending Christmas greetings to 25 stations" instead of "make 25 QSOs." I still don't think it's a problem, but maybe it could have been a little better.

Steve, would calling "CQ Christmas" in any imply to others that it could be construed as a contest on the WARC bands?

Yes. The "rules" page explicitly says "any HF band (160m through 6m)".

Everything was working normal yesterday and then today all 3 antennas have SWR so high the autotuner on FT-1000MP shuts down .  Only weather change was a dusting of snow this morning and a temp. around 17 F.  Rotor turns sluggishly, but it does turn.  Went out and visually checked antennas, but didn't see anything. Hmmm ....   Hope it's just the cold weather.

Only one coax runs out to an Ameritron 5 position switch at base of tower and coax switch selects proper antennas.  Only thing I can remember happening was a few years ago one of the relay armatures became disconnected when a spring broke.  Usually get out there once a year to burnish relay contacts.

I'm perplexed ...

Merry Christmas to All !

Re: 2021 Ham Radio Resolutions

Instead of a resolution, I gave myself a challenge last year.  Even though I have my 366 endorsement, I challenged myself to do it again but in a single year.  359 down and 7 to go.  Travel restrictions from the pandemic helped.  So if you don't do well with resolutions, give yourself a challenge.  Participate in every sprint,  set a goal for a certain LONP level,  recruit one new member a week or at least try.  I'm up for any suggestions.

Looking forward to working lots of you then. It’s good to see condx improving. I’m living in SW Missouri now, so that QTH will be good for the contest, if my probes of 20M yesterday prove out.

Merry Christmas to all, see you OTA!

Christmas Run 2020 Reminder

stan W9SMR

In some of the past years, we've offered the Christmas Run endorsement/sticker for making 25 QSOs on Christmas Day (UTC). This Endorsement has not been offered for several years. So this year because of COVID-19 and possibly fewer family gatherings, it seemed appropriate to Steve, W3HF to again offer this challenge to Members only.

Non-Members: While this is a 070 members only award, if you have 50 or more total PSK-31 QSO’s in your log, and 25 on Christmas day, simply apply for membership by 2359 December 25,  Submit your December Run log and the award can be yours, too!

- Make 25 PSK31 QSOs on 25 December 2020 (0000z to 2359z) on any HF band (160m through 6m) to claim the "2020 Christmas Run" version.

- Make one QSO per station per band. That means the same station on another band is a second QSO, but a second QSO on the same band is a dupe.

- No required exchange, though perhaps Christmas greetings would be appropriate.

Since we are having so many issues with our Endorsement Checker software, Steve has offered to manually check your submitted log and issue the award.

- To enable manual review, please

     - Extract only PSK31 QSOs from 25 December 2020

     - Extract only the date/time/callsign/frequency/mode fields

     - Export to a text file (.txt or .prn) or a .csv. (Definitely not an ADIF)

     - Submissions that don't follow these instructions may be rejected

Save your log file to a convenient folder and include your CALL in the file name.

Then - Send your log extract to w3hf@... by 1 January 2021.

DO NOT submit your log to the Endorsement Checker

- To help others, we encourage members to share (on the email reflector) the steps for how to accomplish a log extract like this for various logging programs. The steps I followed for this in fldigi are below.

Wishing you good luck and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

73,

 Stan

Now Barry...We'll arm wrestle for the "Low Man/Woman on the Totem Pole" award.
Of late, it seems that as excited as I get before one of our operating events, come the event, I just don't spend enough time with the "Butt-in-the-Chair" macro as I should!

Contest Certificates

Jim K5SP

Earlier this year a poll was conducted, and the vast majority of the membership said that email receipt of certificates for contests was okay.

As a result the advisory board decided that all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place certificates for each contest would be sent via email.  Top Dawg certificates would be mailed to include the Rollo Keychain award for that prestigious placing.

Today, emails were sent to those members receiving certificates for the Firecracker Sprint. The certificates were sent to the email address on file in our database. If you expected, and did not receive a certificate it is most likely because your email address changed, and you did not notify the club as to the change.

I apologize for the short message with the email, but for each contest I have to create 13 certificates, and that means 13 emails.  In the next few days certificates for the contests after the Firecracker sprint will be created an mailed.

Congratulations to those who excelled in the contests.
