Congrats - PODXS 070 Endorsements – March 2021

stan W9SMR

As propagation conditions slowly improve, we are showing some good gains in member Endorsements. Our regular contests have helped also.

Officially receiving the LONP #450 slot was David, KE5PYF #1081 for 100 member QSOs.  He also completed 150, and 200 levels.

Officially achieving the 500 Level Honor Roll was Mike, VE3LTN #1763 with 503 QSOs

Achieving the 150 Level was Jim, AJ3DI #2110.

Reaching the 700 Level Award was David, KR4U #262.

We also have an excited pack of LONP Seekers in hot pursuit of this traditional first rights award. If you see them, give them a call and spot them on PSKReporter and our reflector:

With the endorsement software not working properly, a lot of manual intervention has been required. Our Executive Director, Jim, K5SP, with assistance from David, K9DWR, and Milt, N6MG have been manually updating the LONP data.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!!

Since the endorsement checker does not properly recognize and give any LONP credit for member numbers that are greater than 2786, this task must now be completed manually by a volunteer. Follow these Instructions!

Congratulations to all for your diligent pursuit of these cherished Awards!!

73,
Stan

Even if you purchase a computer that bears the name of an American company, most of the components will be made in China. Thus, I have little concern about purchasing a computer from a Chinese brand. My most recent computer purchase was a high-end gaming PC from MSI (MicroStar International) based in China. It has performed flawlessly. When I am ready to purchase a new laptop computer, I will be considering MSI as one of my options.

Any computer that meets the minimum requirements for the operating system is likely to have sufficient capability for running most ham radio software. If you are still running Windows 7 or earlier, however, it is time to upgrade as those operating systems have reached EOL and are no longer supported by Microsoft. It poses potential security risks if connected to the Internet.

There are also ham software programs that will run under Linux and MacOS if that is your preference. There are even some that will work with Android and a few that will work with iPhone or iPad. Since Chromebooks run a version of Linux, they are an option as well.

If you are adventuresome, you can use a RaspberryPi, install Linux and use it for many of your ham radio needs.

Back in the late fall, Lenovo had a laptop on sale at Best Buy for $119. I didn't see it anywhere else.
"Lenovo IdeaPad Slim144AST-05"
"Model Name 81VS"
That's what's on the sticker affixed to the bottom. I bought 2.
One is going to be dedicated to A.P.E. w/MixW, & I'll use the .adi log in MixW and try not to keep a separate log.
Just a bit of background. Lenovo bought IBM's personal computer business back in 2005 or so. It was sometime just after that they started branding them with their own name. It's a real company and I wasn't too worried about quality, warranty, etc.
Back to BPSK31. I'm soon to announce my A.P.E. plans for the upcoming season.

I use an inexpensive Kindle Fire HD8+ tablet (battery lasts all day) running DroidPSK with a Bluetooth keyboard and Signalink interface to a battery powered IC-7300.  I tried using a laptop with a DC converter plugged into the car (to get around the laptop battery issues), but ran into RFI problems, so didn't pursue it further.

Working multiple modes exercises the frontal lobe cerebral cortex central sulcus area of your right brain.
Some of us really show a need to work multiple modes more than others of us, ya know?

Hmmmm ... didn't see anything in rules for this contest about dupes.  If we were allowed dupes than that makes this test too complicated...  I may have missed something when I read rules, but I doubt it.

This may be my last 31 flavors.  I was ill all day yesterday and the switching between modes was driving me nuts.  Spent more time off the air than on.

You can have dupes any time you want. But:

- only six hours worth of operating will be counted for your score
- dupes during that period will be worth 0 (zero) QSO points

The scorer will ignore any QSOs outside of the operating period you select. Since it doesn't care about those QSOs, it doesn't care if they are dupes during that period.

If I'm understanding this correctly, I can have "Dupes" during the entire time of the operating event. Just no dupes during my 6 hour log submittal time block?
Is this correct?

If you have a KX2 or KX3, PSK31 is built into the radio. All you need is paddles to use the internal keyer to generate the PSK signal. You read the received message on the LCD display. It’sa bit more involved than just pushing a macro key in FLDigi, but for a quick POTA or SOTA exchange, it is not too excessive.

I would be interested to see what others are using for PSK. Specifically the computer. I also like doing POTA and PSK, but my old laptop (i3 Lenovo) is heavy and will only last about 30 minutes before giving up. A new battery would help if I could find one, but this unit was only good for two hours with a new battery. Anyone try a Chromebook? iPad? The budget is somewhat limited so I need to keep the expense to a minimum.

Hi Milt,
I've done 4 POTAs this year, 3 PSK31 and one CW.  It's definitely an addicting, fun activity.  Even if you prefer to stay in the shack, you can access the POTA spotting site (pota.us) and participate as a hunter.  The POTA "home base" site (parksontheair.com) does a great job tracking all the statistics (eligible parks, activations, hunters, etc).  Who has more fun than a ham???

For the last 3 or 4 years, the only mode I activate for Field Days and Special Events is PSK31.  Also, since I started POTA, last December, the only mode is PSK31.  On Monday, April 12th, I’ll be activated with FMARC as W4LX for another POTA (the 5th POTA activation since December).  My rig involves a Yaesu FT-450D along with a Buddistick and other essential items.

Milt,

Trying to get my portable station gear together.  Still working some things out.  Should be ready for  a POTA activation in late May.  Going to try SSB first and then start using PSK.  My current laptop can't handle more than an hour of PSK before the battery gives our.  The old processor is pretty inefficient.  Going to get a modern laptop.  First activation is going to be Palomar Mt State Park.  Been there a number of times.  I can't wait.

My log is submitted!
It was another successful operating event because of our club management, and of course the participation of our membership.
Thanks everybody for helping with big doses of patience, spotting and qso's.
From help writing mode macro's, to encouragement to stick it out to the end, it's really a club-wide effort.

PS;

There is a strong push in Southern California to use 146.580 MHz, or the newly dubbed "National Adventure Frequency" because the National Calling Frequency is so tied up on the weekends from the mountain tops.  Actually, some weekends even 146.580 gets jammed and I've resorted to other TASMA approved simplex frequencies for 2m

Milt,

Yeah, I got the SOTA bug bad last year and have hiked up 56 mountains since August 2020.  I've yet to find a way to make an ultralightweight digital station.  My pack currently runs about 25 pounds for day trips.

The Los Angeles Basin is a great place to start doing SOTA because it is ringed with a lot of cool summits.  For my first 40 of so activations all I had was my old dual band Kenwood HT and I was working stations from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border.

Finally got an Elecraft KX2 and now I've worked Sweden, France, Spain, Canada and most of the states from mountain tops.

I need to get an Android phone and figure out the Rasberry Pi thing.  That's on my to-do list.

I see that a lot of the 070 members are also active in POTA, SOTA & BOTA.
When you activate a park, summit or beach, do you ever use psk31?
I've joined each group, as we've got an abundance of each group here in California and the Southwest.
It's kind of neat to listen to 146.520 FM on the weekends. There's "activations" from all 3 groups all day and into the evenings for the locals.
