I've heard tell that anything lower than 2.1:1 is okay.  That was from all the old timers in the 70's.

That's what I did.  Started on 10, then 15, readjust 10 and 15 until have both. This did require moving the traps from the factory positioning on the tubes, not just changing the overall spacing.  Then adjusted 20 and readjusted 10, 15, and 20 until I had all three....and so on thru 80.  Then went back and did 12 (adjusts with HotRodz) with only minimal change on 10 (no adjustment needed) and the same with 17.  It took a while, lots of ups and downs, but wasn't too bad as I had installed the DXEngineering tilt-base when I put it up.  When we were traveling summers, I took the antenna down and stored it in three pieces.  Reinstalling in the fall only required minor tweaking.  What I have noticed is that with the change in temps here in Florida from winter to summer, there is sufficient expansion of the aluminum tubing to change the tuning.  Now that we are home summers, I re-tune when it heats up and then again when it cools off!  Probably a waste, but I like to have things as close as I can.  And it gives me something to do!

Nice! I guess I’m qualified… I’m always in the hole some way or another!

Well, I just broke ground. Had to find the exact site that was not visible from mama’s chair in the sunroom. I think I found the right spot – and if not I’ll have to ask for forgiveness (again). I might have to remove a tree branch at the far end so I can tilt the antenna over, but that won’t be a problem if necessary.

We had over an inch of rain Sunday, so I figured I’d better strike when the iron was soft. Got down about 2 feet and about a foot in diameter. Need to go a foot deeper and 6” bigger around, but at least I haven’t hit Kaolin yet. I'm going to set two 4 x 4's three feet in the ground (in concrete) with the mast between them tilting at about the 4' 6" mark. The antenna is supposed to be 25' high, so figuring just a bit of mast above the 4 x 4's, my 30' clear-zone should be okay. (I hope!) Mama is taking my truck to Florida this weekend, so I'd better go get some concrete mix or I'll be hauling it in the back of my son's Ford Focus.

Sorry guys...I won't be on.  The 160m adaptation is down and I'm back to 80-10.  I live in an HOA restricted community and am thankful just to be allowed the vertical.  I try to get the temporary wires I put up in "violation" of the rules down before anyone sees them and gets upset.  Good luck to you all and I hope to have a few more nights on 160 before the season ends.  But I got to space them out!

Lots of hoisting it up and letting it down. But last night made it worth the effort! Good luck if you have a go at it.

One other note: I did drop one of the 3/32 allen head setscrews in the grass when I was changing out the whip for the wire. Didn't even bother to look for it. Just made a hardware store run this morning for a replacement. Bought several hi hi!

Re: Another go at 160m tonight

Rick, Thanks for the info.  Have you gotten your 6BTV to resonate on 30 and 40 mtrs.  I have 42 radials down and I find that the antenna has lowest SWR on 30 at 9.995 mHz and 40 around 7.000 mHz.  I have adjusted the trap for 30, but could not get it down very much.  I am thinking about shorting the tubing for 40 to move up the band a little.  My IC7410 tuner can get the SWR down, but I would like to have both bands resonate a little higher in frequency.

Nice time on 160 last night.  I worked W4RTT, K4ARE, KX4WB, and WM4B which increased my state count to 5 states on 160.  I did not manage to work Rick, N7WE, although I think I saw him on the waterfall briefly.  I thought that since our QTH are fairly close I would get him on ground wave, but no luck.

Rick, what website suggested the mod to the 6BTV, as I have one also?

OK, a different approach to an antenna now operational.  I'll be on 1.807 near 0100 UTC calling CQ.  Prop from last night was reported as good from then until it started to fall off about 1200 UTC.  And no contest showing on WA7BNM's contest calendar. This antenna setup shows 3.1:1 SWR and tunes to 1.1:1 with my internal tuner.  It remains to be seen if it can hear and speak.  Any help greatly appreciated!

Well now that was just plain fun! Many thanks to all who came out. I did manage to complete my top band endorsement. Whew! It sure is a lot easier when the antenna can hear and speak. What I did was run a wire off the 80m resonator on the top of the Hustler 6BTV to add top load capacitance. Saw it on the internet. Ended up with the wire being about 19' 6" long and that got things to where the internal tuner on the K3 handled it with no problems...and no auto backing down the power. Not an effecient set up, and I loose 80m with this configuration, but it got the job done. Thanks for all the reports guys.

Jim, I never saw you. But I think I worked everyone I could hear. It was mostly N&S - NY, PA, NC, GA, KY, TN, and MS. Thanks again to you all!
