Sherri,

When are you getting on and what band?  I know we've worked before but I haven't seen you for quite a while.

I'm usually on at 0000(ish) UTC.  I'll start on 20 meters and if it's dead I'll move to 40.  We're probably a bit close for 20 meters; I'll have to check my log to see where we worked before.

Occasionally, I'll jump on for a few minutes around 2000 UTC or somewhere in between, but that's spotty at best.

Don't feel bad.  There was a period not too long ago when it seem like all the propagation was one-way.  Seems to go in cycles and it must be your turn in the barrel!

It's possible that there's something subtle going on with CW and FT8.

Whether or not a QSO is possible is a function of the characteristics of the
stations at *both* ends of the ether.

*You* may be using 15W and even a wire antenna, but the *other* guy may be
using a kilowatt or more and stacked yagis on a 240' tower.

I usually run 100W on CW and FT8 and have passable transmit and receive
antennas at a semi-rural QTH. I am prolly about to start routinely running
about 400-500W on FT8, because my average signal report is about 6db down
from
how I can hear other stations with my station.

Part of the reason why we can't talk on PSK may be that we have a pretty
strong anti-QRO ethic, so I don't know how many big-gun stations even try to
play.

OTOH, given the technical characteristics of PSK, we may not be able to
tolerate a mixed QRP and QRO environment like CW and FT8 do ...

You can near work FT8 nearly anytime of the day on 30m. Lately PSK has been a struggle on any band and rather than sit and wait until maybe I can decode someone I fall back to FT8 where contacts, on most bands and near 24x7, are plentiful. I rarely see a limited amount of opportunities on FT8. This on a 44’ vertical.

PSK31 is good down to -10 dB S/N ratio. FT8 is good down to -23dB or so. Since the dB scale is logarithmic rather than linear, the difference is huge.

I love working PSK when the bands permit. When I turn on my radio, I check out all the PSK frequencies from 80m  up to 10m. However, if I do not see signals that I can work using  PSK, I will start up WSJT-X and try FT8. I have WSJT-X linked to HRD using JTAlert so I can still log my FT8 contacts in the same database as my other digital contacts.

I rarely see DX signals on PSK with current band conditions; but DX signals are fairly common on FT8 because of the huge difference in capability of that mode during difficult conditions. I have not picked up additional DXCC entities, but I have worked quite a few ones I have worked on PSK when times were good.

I am using a 40 meter OCF wire strung at only 21 ft height. It tunes 40m, 20m, 10m, and 6m fairly well. With a tuner, I have made contacts on 12m, 15m and 17m as well when propagation is good. However, since experimenting with FT8, I have made 40 contacts on 30m, even though my antenna is very inefficient on that band and propagation has been poor. The efficiency of FT8 overcomes the inefficincy of my antenna.

So if you can make contacts on PSK, by all means do so. I would love to see yuou on the waterfall. But when PSK is just not there, FT8 will keep you on the air.

FT8 is much more robust as a weak signal mode.

That being said, I'm happy to struggle along with PSK31 and have actual human-to-human interaction!  ;>)

Due to antenna restrictions at this time I will only be on 40/20/15/10 - based on conditions ---  however when I am going on the air I will post to "group.io" which band and of course if I change bands as well as when I go off air
like the rest - macros built, extra chair cushion in place, YL given the credit card to go shopping, and a sacrifice ready for the condition gods....
