Antenna tuner suggestions / help

Martin Tuip

I'm looking to tap into the knowledge of all of you here a bit.  My main shack is in my house but I have a secondary shack in my garage with a simple Alinco radio and a VHF setup as well.  I'm not specifically planning to do any digital from there but I do most of my antenna design and builds there.

I'm experimenting with different wire and verticals and am thinking a manual tuner is going to give me more flexibility than an automatic tuner as I also get a little bit more insight (plus I wonder if a manual tuner will allow me to sometimes to a better job than auto tuners).  At the moment I'm sticking to max 100W although I have a dedicated 240V circuit for an amp already installed.  What would you suggest without spending a ton of money.  MFJ (yeah I know their reputation) has like 3 million models and I'm just lost.

If anyone has a used one laying around that they don't need and am willing to part with as well for some $ I'm open too.

I uploaded my St. Pats log to David's checker last night, Sunday, and out of 14 QAO's got 14 LONP'a and 1
Maple leaf. So VA3FLF seems to be good there.

BLW, my Yaesu FT-450D went dead in mid-contest too.

Oh Lord Jerry, I didn’t take offense at all. You didn’t say anything wrong. I am just looking out for the better of the group. My Canadian call was issued on May 23, 2017.

I expect to stay up here except for short visiting trips for another couple of years. The xyl has two more years to retire and then we see what happens. Most of my operating will be done up here. So I don’t know if that answers your question about the database Jim. Maybe at this point enter as VA3FLF.

When I win the lottery how will you guys enter my Jamaican call?  Hi!

Thanks everyone.

I just looked at the membership listing under 2301 and it shows a date pattern for his VA3 call that I can't recognize. (The same VA3 call seems to be listed twice with two start dates.) Even though there aren't end dates listed for either, I wonder if the contest checker is confused. I think there should only be one start date (the 5/18/17 date) and no end date.

I think this is a database change that the membership manager can make, not a logic change that would have to wait for David. And if it's done quickly, it should be able to be in effect for the contest.

Regardless, it should count for LONP as it's clearly Steve.

I checked the member list, and VA3FLF is tied to KM3FLF and a start date of 04/09/2016 is shown for both, with no end date because to my knowledge he still holds both tickets.   His VA3FLF according to QRZ starts 11-14-17.  Not sure what the date pattern is that Steve doesn't recognize, and not sure where the 5/18/17 date he is referring to comes from.

Sorry to hear about the FT-1000MP.  I'm unable to make that error.  Not because I'm good....but because I have only one measly vertical!  Hope you have a backup rig on the shelf.  Would sure miss you if you were off air while it goes to the Yaesu Doctor.

Doesn't look like it... of the 9 bands on radio only the 40m position seems bad.  The sensitivity is down on receive (almost like there's zero noise level), but transmit is okay.  Lots like Yaesu Doctor time.

This rig has been acting goofy lately.  Have to watch the output power because running up & down the band there tends to be less power on low end and too much on the other end of band.  Feel like an old broadcast engineer having to constantly "ride the gain".

The weirdest one happened this morning on 20m  ... was siting down at 14070 and had the bandwidth set to usual 2.4K when a signal up at 14073 completely swamped out the receiver.  Thought it was just that one station which may have been over driving audio or running too much power.  About an hour later there was a different station in the same frequency on the other coast doing exactly the same thing.

Don't thing I'll get rid of FT-1000MP, just for a couple of freak things, but I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else has had a similar problems with an FT-1000.

BTW, when his happens I can usually narrow bandwidth down to 500 or 250 Hz. , but then I can't watch the entire band.

Jim .... got a chance to dig up the 993 manual and did a total factory reset .... seems to be fine now .... I enjoyed the non technical description for problems in the Manual " behaving weirdly or erratic try resetting to factory defaults" ..... simple descriptions of problems work best for me .... thanks again for the heads up Jim

Jerry ... sorry to hear about the FT-1000 ..... hopefully a quick and economical repair

Re: Oops !

Sorry to hear that, Jerry. I almost had something similar.

I finally got my 80m "low inverted-vee sloper" put back together on Friday afternoon. It had been displaced when we had some siding work done on the house early in January. (That's why I wasn't on bands lower than 40m in PSKfest.) So I got it put back together just in time on Friday, and proceeded to testing. And it wouldn't load up on 80 or 30 (3rd harmonic). I got it to work on 12m (7th harmonic), but that was about it. Then I noticed that I couldn't get the 20m dipole to load up either, and I hadn't touched it. (Of course, I hadn't touched anything since PSKfest.)

It took me about ten minutes of frustration and troubleshooting to realize that I had forgotten the labeling--the 20m antenna is "antenna 1" and the 80m is "antenna 2". So I did prove they weren't interchangeable. At least I did that with low power and didn't damage the TS2000.

Sometimes there are "Oops in contests" .   This St Pat's Day contest was my turn.   While switching from 20m to 40m I forgot to switch antennas and proceeded to load up 40m into a tribander...  resulting in a dead 40m band on the FT-1000... guess it's going out for repair .   That's what happens when one loses  concentration.

Had a fun time.  Was in and out several times as other priorities had to be handled.  And sometimes when I was in the bands weren't!  Probably when I was out the bands were in...but I'll never know.  That's life these days.  I was particularly pleased to see and be able to work several of our newer members.  Thank you and welcome to the good times for all!

Next year with "all comers" format it should be a lot easier to pick up "Erin Go Bragh."  I ended up short an N and a B.  Didn't pick up any new grids, but managed to push the LONP total to 550!  That's a good contest in my book.

I'll check on that.  I was on DXSHELL not sure if that's the official one.  I finally got my log right, only 5 bad ones, not shabby.  I got GO BRAGH,  WOOT.  now for a pint of Guinness
, it only takes 3.5minutes to draw it into a mug. Oh and yes, my family originally was from Cork proper.

I'd love to use that program but Windows Defender says in has a Trojan:Win32/Fuery.A!cl virus.

Thanks to those who assisted. I used  ADIF MASTER to make sure all my fields were correct. only one error, but sadly it was for the special event station, k4p so it didn't count. probably wrote down the wrong band, I do that all the time.

Thank again!

You'll et the hang of contests in time.  Getting logs right has always been a problem for me and I usually end up with a few numbers that don't match or got omitted because I was falling asleep, hi !  Chalk it all up to experience.  The idea of contests is to make you a better operator, able to copy what you hear/see quickly and accurately.

Mat & Paula gave you some starting points and you should be able to take it from there. If you have quesions please ask the list, they're only too glad to help.  It's not like there was money riding on the contest ... or was there ?

Thanks, Paula! I will look tomorrow with fresh eyes. I suspect the primary problem lies with me not knowing how the fields in the fldigi log map to an adif file. I really just don't know / can't decide what to use for a logging app so I'm using native logging for now. 🤷

Thanks!

Sherri, if there are errors, they should show up in red further down the page when you look at your results. If you upload again, and check the checkbox to allow all to see your score, we could take a look at the errors and offer some suggestions on how to fix it. If you look at the scorer page, you will see that some callsigns are hyperlinks. If you click them, you can see their results. Take a look at mine – and you will see two errors. Hope this helps!

This was a lot of fun. I got 18 QSOs which is more than any other contest so far. Now, I gotta figure out what on Earth happened with my adif file. The scorer awarded me no points. Hmm
