Re: Solar panels and radio

Bob,

We had a 9.6 KW  stand-alone (not rooftop) tilting solar array installed in 2017 and advised the installer/contractor about RFI.  Consequently he chose micro-inverters made by Blue Frog.

I saw no difference in my bands before and after turning on the array, which easily powers my house and sells power back to the utility, reducing my monthly bills.

Re: Estate of Silent Key

Mike,

My condolences to the family of the SK. To be honest, the sale of estate gear can really turn in to a big headache. Our club has had three of these SK estates in the last year or two. We have tried to do this differently each time and I am not sure if any option is better than the other. Here are the three ways we have dot this:

1. Appoint a club member / estate manager (honest and compassionate) and have him arrange to meet with the widow or family. View all the equipment and decide what has real value and what doesn't. Honestly, we all know hams collect so much stuff. I have 4 or 5 totes in the garage right now of stuff that is useless after I am gone. Decide on whether the family wants a percentage of the items that are sold and agree to some percentage for the club. We used 15-20%  to family and 5-10% for club. The manager can either post items among club members, or sell online, or swap meets / hamfest.  We had a special swap meet with a nearby club and sold some of the items that way.

2. Point them to a club member or someone that is a "hamfest vendor." Let them negotiate with the family for items. Only problem with this method, is sometimes, not all, of these hamfest dealers can be a bit scrupulous. We have all seen them. Do not let them take advantage of the family.

3. Donate the estate to a school club, school station or even the club for a club station. This turned out to be the easiest and the best way to take care of the equipment. When I am gone I would hope my stuff finds a good home. I would be proud of knowing my station went to a school club or STEM.

For the rest of us, make your wishes known to your family ahead of time. Please, do not leave your poor wife or husband to wonder what to do with all that stuff in the shack. I have known of equipment being stored for years because the survivors have no idea what to do with it. None of these options are easy and you just have to decide which route to take based on the situation. Heck you might even just want to stay out of the whole mess if you have a bunch of greedy children looking to make a buck off of dad or grandpas passing.

We found that number three was the best way to handle the estate. No one is taken advantage of, no one gets ripped off, no one complains about not getting to bid on a radio. This particular SK 's equipment went to a high school station in the new technology center being built. The widow made the right decision.

Hope that helps,

Steve

John,

I took your suggestion and this is the answer I got.  Thought I'd share it with the group.

Question:  Are there any products that mitigate the RFI noise caused by solar panels? Specifically panels with micro inverters. I have found some products but nothing to document the effectiveness is referenced.

Answer:
Hello,

Great question - unfortunately there are so many variations on solar controllers out there, there is no one-size fits all solution.

Your best bet is to contact the company that installed the system and complain about the RF interference - they may have a specific kit that can be installed.

The ARRL is actively working on complaints and with solar manufacturers about this RFI problem.

A good resource of info is the RFI Reflector http://lists.contesting.com/archives//html/RFI/

Good luck & 73,

One of the members of our local radio club has been asked to help dispose of the ham radio equipment of a recent Silent Key.  He is wondering if there are any Standard Practices or recommendations available, so he does not have to reinvent the wheel.  Right now he is researching Google and YouTube.

Does anyone in the group have experience with a similar situation?  Have any suggestions I could pass on to him, based on experience?

My suggestion is to start a GoFund and ask all the members to contribute. For a reasonable price you can get a SQL Database, all the SQL scripts and even tied into the Website. If the Club has an 503C, many Database Companies may even give you a database for FREE or a very reduced fee. I am on the board of directors for an non-profit here in Dallas, TX. We needed a Database and all three of the Companies we contacted quoted us a very reduced rate because of being a non-profit and having 503C status and handled all the scripting for us. My computer skills are on par for an retired DEA CSI but not at the level of a Database Expert. I am sure that if you put out a message that a lot of Database Experts would come to your aid and advise you.

I don't know what kind of Database the 070 Club uses but almost every database I have used, you can upload one record or thousands and it will not affect any of the records already stored. As for doing corrections, it is a simple SQL script that will cause the record in question to be over written with the new record. Also uploading already existing records can either cause all the existing records to be over written or duplicate records to be installed. To display a persons awards, again it is a simple script that will go thru the database, find that persons entries and display them to the screen. Also by using a person's callsign as the key field, the database can hold everyone that uploads to it. With the key field being the persons callsign allows the Sql script to see only those records that relate to the user. So there is no reason to upload ones entire log. Seems to me that the 070 really needs to be brought into the 21th Century.

That is a problem that needs to be fixed. Also it said I could apply for 4 awards. I clicked on all 4 and it then said I had another Award I could apply for. So I clicked on it and it displayed the 4 awards I had already said I could apply for. it just keeps on switching between the 4 then the 1 and back to the 4. Also I can not download the Membership Award because my callsign is NOT in the list.

Oh no !!!  Never ask me to correct errors in the checker, that would be a huge mistake  because when it comes to computers I have the RMT  (Reverse Midas Touch)  Emoji !

Speaking of Grids,  I was unhappy that after working 200 stations on FD not one measly new grid was found.  Ugh ! Although K0GNE the Nebraska group which is headquartered in South Dakota announced that their FD was held in SD, but I never asked for a grid  Emoji !  Ya win some and ya lose some !

Guess I'll have to stick to working grids the usual ways.  So many grids and so few stations there on PSK !

But FD was like the good ol' days with lotsa stations on PSK !

I use a general logging program for all contacts. If you only use Fldigi you may have an issue. But if you use one of the many free general logging programs you can export and import from any program into your  general logger. From there as I did this morning. I export a partial log, only psk31 contacts. I had it done and sent in less then 5 minutes. If you don't use a general logging program I highly encourage you to do so. It makes it much easier to do many things.

Re: 070 Award Checker log errors

JoAnn and all:

I use N3FJP's AC Log for my main log and pretty much do what he does. (Except for the twice a year thing)   I can filter only PSK31 data from day 1; so all that goes to checker is PSK31 contacts only.

It necessary to send in ENTIRE PSK31 LOG every time you send to checker; otherwise, all your previous awards will be zeroed out. Reloading entire log again will correct that.

Don't blame me because it's been that way since the checker was created.

Hope this clarifies things.

Yes you upload only you PSK31 contacts,  and yes you upload all you PSK31 contacts, (the ones that were uploaded before.)

I have all my contacts in one log that I can filter for PSK31 contacts only.  Then I export those filtered contact to a file.

Actually you only need to upload before the endorsements are mailed out.  Right now that is twice a year.
