Got coast to coast signals on 10M on FT8.
Calling CQ at around 1500 on PSK31.

Re: FD Bulletin copy failure on PSK31 mode - no modulation of signal

Indeed.  I have never had a problem copying the message in all three modes in past years, using the same equipment and software setup, so that is why the situation intrigued me.  I suspect the solution will present itself at some point.

Wow that is strange.  I was able to copy all of the messages on Friday evening.

Re: FD Bulletin copy failure on PSK31 mode - no modulation of signal

No, the radio was on Data mode USB (Icom 746Pro) and worked fine for PSK when I turned the Big Knob down from 14.095 to 14.070.   Once I landed on 14.070, there were the modulated signals that I could copy.

You didn't have your radio mode set to FM or something like that, did you?

FD Bulletin copy failure on PSK31 mode - no modulation of signal

K8TOM

Mystery. Perhaps someone here will have a suggestion.  I run HRD DM 5 on Win 7 Pro. I tuned in Saturday & Sunday to copy the ARRL Field Day bulletin at several different times.  I had no problem copying PSK31 or FT8 transmissions.  I tuned the radio to the prescribed 7.095 or 14.095 frequency.  Each time the FD signal started on time but what was received on the waterfall was only an unmodulated carrier (See pic following).  The lack of modulation was present for all three of the modes broadcast, Baudot, PSK31, and MFSK-16.

This was the case for transmissions from both W1AW and K6KPH.  After the transmissions ended, still using HRD/DM I switched back to PSK mode at 14.070 or 7.070 and that was decoding fine.  I then switched to WSJT-X and that was working fine as well.  The successful xmit/rcv functioning <seems> to rule out the equipment and settings as the cause of no modulation.  Changing antennas made no difference.  Checked the cabling, all good.

This same frustrating situation  was repeated several times as I attempted to copy that bulletin. Fortunately another club member made a good copy. But I'd really like to figure this out.

Does anyone have an idea as to why the modulation for this signal wasn't making it to HRD/DM when everything else seemed normal?  It must be something simple that my mind is blocking...

Not real big on FD these days.  Sorry.

Geary, didn't they have the storms in Lawton that we had here, or were they not north of the Red River??? Had very limited operating time in between cells, and only managed 2 feeble contacts.?? Lightning kept me off the air most of the weekend, and yesterday was really bad.

Looking forward to you getting set up in Oregon Art.??

Nothing wrong with a Texas call.?? I got my first ticket in California in 1974, as WB6EWH.?? Left California in 76, and held that call until 1999, when I obtained K5SP.?? Over those years, operated as WB6EWH/VQ9, WB6EWH/4, WB6EWH/MM1, WB6E/MM2, WB6EWH/0, and WB6EWH/5 (Navy career took me everywhere.).

To get a K3Y QSL, it is by SASE to the Event Coordinator and an attractive QSL card is issued. This year there were almost 33,000 K3Y QSOs.
I guess the smart thing would be to not list 1X1's on Online resources.

BTW. station has been shutdown for a month. I will return in a few weeks at a new QTH in Oregon.
I plan to also change the call since I have moved away from Texas long ago.

Field Day Participants Sticker-Reminder

stan W9SMR

As an acknowledgement of your participation in the ARRL Field Day on June 22 / 23, 2019, our PODXS 070 Club offers a
Field Day Participation Sticker.

Since our Awards Progress Checker has no means to check your log for Field Day participation, in order to receive your Endorsement Sticker it will be necessary for you to send an email directly to me (robinstan@...) by Sunday, June 30.  Please use 2019 Field Day in the subject line.  Send me the email even if you have already posted on the reflector that you participated!

The body of your email needs only your call.  Please DO NOT send or attach your log.  This is on the honor system.  If you say you participated, you participated! - even if you were in a support role (setup/tear-down, KP duty, etc. and never actual got on air.)  I will forward the complete list to those that take care of such things and your sticker will be included in our next mailing!

Send your email to: robinstan@...

What little I was on last night , it seemed that 20m was somewhat open at 0600 UTC.  Worked about 30 stations last night & this morning.  Never saw any activity on 80m nor 15/10m. (PSK31)   Just worked a few for fun.

Had Q with K8TAR  and I thought it funny that K8TAR & N9AVY were in QSO.

Worked about 40 stations on psk31.  Had to turn the preamp off in the rig because of overload sometimes.  Also got to use my really narrow filters.  It was nice to see lots of activity, but I found it strange in NFL the band seemed to go dead around 1800 GMT, with just a couple of non-FD stations on the waterfall.

ready to make a deal.

Jerry, buying a car is always a pain any more.  You see the advertisements that the dealers can't wait to give you a deal until you are at the dealership and they don't seem to be as ready to make a deal.

RRR on car buying.  Sent nasty email to one dealer and was asked for a response from Autotrader where I lowered both guns at dealer.  Hah !

It's crazy but it's been like that for 22 years now.

Because there are so few 1x1 callsigns available (750), and because they are only to be used for special events (which be definition must be short duration--otherwise they wouldn't be special), they are typically only valid for 15 days. And there's no requirement for the call to be vacant for two years between uses, like there is for permanently assigned calls.

There's a separate 1x1 database available at http://www.1x1callsigns.org/ This isn't an ARRL site--the site is actually hosted by the NCVEC. 1x1 calls are administered by five of the VECs who are also authorized by the FCC to issue 1x1 calls. Note that the FCC doesn't catalog these calls, so they don't show up in the ULS.

Unfortunately, QRZ allows listings for 1x1 callsigns, and some holders don't point out that their usage of the call is only temporary. So the only authoritative listing is the one at 1x1callsigns.org. And some of these callsigns have been used dozens of times, so it's not a simple listing. And you have to click through the listing to find out who the actual user is, so it's somewhat laborious.

But some folks want a special callsign, and this is the only way to get a really short callsign.

That is one stupid move by FCC/ARRL !    The station you work today can be different next week , but with same call.  Think there is an ARRL chart somewhere listing all the Special Event calls listed over the years. It was a PITA trying to sort out cards at the Bureau during my 16year tenure there and trying to find out who was the actual recipient for all those 1x1’s.

Why can’t they do what the Europeans do … oh, I forgot that would require actual work !  Special event program is one of the lamest things to come out of FCC/ARRL.

Just my 2 cents worth …

Many stations are using Special Event 1x1 call signs - which is fine.  BUT, be careful if you are using an automatic lookup function in your logging program!  There are only 750 Special Event call signs which are usually authorized for a 15 day period only, and can/are subsequently reissued to a different station for the next event.  What is listed for a 1x1 call in QRZ, other lookup programs, or shown on PSK Reporter may or may not be the info for the current user.   This can make for problems logging (particularly, if like me, you are grid hunting) during Field Day.
