John -  You are most welcome!  Not sure what was going on, but until you switched to the beam I was getting two overlapping traces on this end.  Not a double wide trace of an overdriven signal, but two clean traces overlapping.  I was on a PAR Stressed Moxon that is horiz. polarized, and I assume your vert was vert. polarity.  Don't know if that impacts anything but sig strength.  My other thought is that given how close we are and it being vhf we had two sigs... a ground wave and a reflected ground wave.  I've seen that on 2m FM.  But when you went to the beam, its directivity nulled out the reflected ground wave on receive and the beam width of your TX was narrowed enough to miss whatever was reflecting and thus my receive became a single signal.  Maybe someone who knows more than us will jump in here and give us the answers.  It was fun and there is always something new to learn in radio!  Keeps me keeping on!  TNX & 73

Re: 6M anyone?

Rick,

When I tried to copy you on my R-8 vertical it looked like your signal was going up and down in freq about 4 or 5 Hz and I couldn't lock onto it however when I switched to the beam it was a nice steady signal and almost 100% cpy.  Anyway thanks for my first 6 mtr PSK contact

Made contact with John KC3FL and got things sorted.  Many thanks John.  Now I hope for good 6m prop on the 20th - 22nd so I can catch the KC9UR and W9SMR/9 Ape on 6m this year.

I think I may be waving off for today. The FT-857 won't stay in transmit mode--it clicks in and then immediately clicks out. I've checked the SWR and it's good.

Unless I can figure it out quickly, today is likely to be a bust. Sorry.

I'm currently on a business trip to Diego Garcia, the seventh time I've been here in the past 9 years. Unfortunately, this trip is much more intensive than the previous ones--working six days a week, 10+ hours per day, up at 0500 every day--so finding time to play radio (when I should really be sleeping) is difficult. But I'm going to try and get on the air tomorrow.

I'll plan on trying between 0800z and 1800z. I will focus mostly on 20m, though I could try others if propagation is better. I probably won't be on for all ten hours straight, but I'll try to call CQ every 15 minutes or so (starting at the top of the hour). I'll also try and post when I'm on the air, and when I take a break for meals.

Station is an FT-857 with the ground-mounted center-loaded vertical that I've used on all my previous APEs and other portable operations. (This is the original AD5X antenna from July 2002 QST.) I'll be operating from my quarters, as I had done on previous trips. In fact, the pictures on the groups.io site under "VQ9HF Trip" are pretty much accurate for this trip also.

I used to belong to the Roanoke Ham Club. I was on the committee for a couple of the Ham Fest. Did you have to run into Ray AB4YZ. he and I did a HF contact when I got AB8YZ after I moved to West Virginia.

Steve-
I will definitely be looking for you!  Diego Garcia would be an ATNO for me.  There maybe some hope as I saw Reunion Is. strong this morning - about 1400 UTC.  But he couldn't hear me.  If I see your trace, I will put more "fire in the wire!"  Hope to work you!

Hi Steve !

Worked you on Diego Garcia back in 2017.  TU !

Will watch for you while you're there , but don't hold much hopewith propagation being what it is and your schedule As well.  Probably best chance for me is between 1100 and 1800 UTC on 20m.  Wish 15m was workable, but not until Cycle 25 improves.  15m was always a "money band" for Africa & Indian Ocean contacts.

Have fun while you're on Diego Garcia !!!

Had trouble decoding but got him in the books.  Actually looks like he's coming thru a little better to my QTH now as I see him working other ops.

1545 UTC and Milt is still loud on 20m.

Just had my QSO with Milt.  Really weak signal here but that is expected, too close for 20 meters.  Only 50 miles away form me.  Almost never hear Milt from my QTH on 20 meters.
Good luck Milt
