40 & 80m

Hey all,

Any reason why there is such little PSK activity on 40 & 80m?
I think 40m is a nice band. My screen is mostly empty when I listen
or put out CQ's. Maybe we could have some informal 070
gatherings there once in a while? Start stirring up some activity on
those bands? I like 10, 15 & 20m, but it would be nice to make
more contacts on the lower bands. Maybe my G5RV is broken?
But hey, it worked for the TDW contest.

Happy 4th! Karen - W4GTM

Karen & Jay

Same observation from here. 40M and 80M seem to be abandoned. How about a
"Dog Days Sprint" type of contest? It could be a 4 hr sprint from say 0001Z
to 0040Z. Dates and times may have to be adjusted - Do not try this at home
- Other local restrictions may apply.

Hi Erika, I'm afraid I'm a pretty rare catch on PSK at the moment as most of my air time is spent on CW but perhaps we can make a sked, perhaps on 30 or 40m? They seem to be the best for DL from here.

Being a new kid on the block when it comes to PSK. I have lots to learn
yet. I have yet found any PSK on 80 and about the only PSK on 40 was
during FD and like Jay, I worked more PSK stations on 40 than I did on
any other band.
Maybe some one can fill me in on where I might find PSK on 80, both
North America and Europe and where Europe hangs out on 40 PSK.
I have worked many stations on 30 already and even a few on 17.
Hopefully I will find a few in my log over the next few days on the
lower bands...

I've often wondered the same thing. Seems like everyone is hung up on the
"middle" bands. I only have 3 QSO's on 6 meters, and not many more than that

going on 160.

Hi Erika, let me clear up our prefixes as they can be confusing!
FOUNDATION LICENCE: 10W ALL BANDS EXCEPT 10m
Prefix: M3 (MM3 etc.)
INTERMEDIATE LICENCE (class A): 50W ALL BANDS
Prefix: 2E0 (2M0 etc)
INTERMEDIATE LICENCE (class B): 50W 50MHz and above

FULL LICENCE (class A) 400W ALL BANDS
Prefix: G0,2,3,4,5 (2 LTR), 6 (2LTR), 8 (2LTR); M0

FULL LICENCE (class B) 400W 50MHz and above
Prefix G1,6 (3ltr), 7, 8 (3 ltr); M1

It's a horrible system! So you won't get any 1's on HF (yet!) as it's a VHF licence. Hope that clears things up a bit. The exception to the rule are the single letter contest calls which could contain any number plus a single letter suffix.

How is that meant, we can't work MM1 or GM1, I'm not so sure about the
numbers 2 and 4 but I never saw any MM1 or GM1 on HF-bands.

Scottish endorsement clarification

N3DQU@...

Keeping in mind G4UCJ's explanation of the UK licensing structure, here is
a clarification of what you need for the Scottish endorsement:
Five QSO's required:
1. GM0KWW
2. GMx (any suffix)
3. MM0CBL
4. MMx (where x= 0, 1,2,4 or 5)
5. MM3
You do not have to work one each of MMx, just one of your choice.
According to George MM0CBL, they no longer issue GM prefixes, so now you
should be hearing a lot more MM's out there. The MM3 prefix is for the new
entry level classs called the "Foundation License" and they are only limited
to 10w out I think. According to Sean, an M1 license is good only for 50 MHz
and above, unless it is a specially issued contest call. Is that correct?

Just a reminder that we have a new award program called "August PSK
Expedition" or APE for short. The purpose of this award is to learn abt the
portable capabilities of PSK31 by getting those members who are
portably-inclined out in the field during the month of August. In the
process, expedition members earn a nice piece of wallpaper and 070 members
who show up in the log get an attaboy. Info on the APE program can be found

Re: Apologies

Hi Joe,
I must thank you very much for the explanation of this insidious virus.
The was you described it is indeed exactly the way it happened. Although
everybody involved has been very good there were one or two who felt I
probably did not download the latest defs or that I had disabled Norton
myself but I know I had not :)
It also shut down some of the windows utilities as well. For instance I
decided at one point to delete Norton since I could not get in to it, but
the Add/Delete Program Files would not open. I also got the feeling that
the original virus I got transmuted itself after disabling Norton etc as
there were three different "carriers" (the subject line was different in
each case) but each carried the same various.
Anyway, thanks also for your tip on Zone Alarm. I will certainly look
into that.

keep in touch Joe, 73 Ernie

Ernie,
Glad your getting this all working again and no need to apologize.
The virus that you caught is particularly nasty because it does disable,
not
only, Norton but also most other antivirus programs, that are on the
market,
before it goes to work and it makes it difficult to re-installed your AV
programs. I recently had a customer who had the same virus attack them and
we had to install another AV program and rename the AV executable just to
get the virus off the server and the servers are still not 100% but the
virus is gone, as far as we can tell. Now, I don't normally go out of my
way
to recommend too many things, unless asked, but I think this may help some
people and I need to do something to try to cut down on some of these
attacks that have been growing in number over that couple of months. The
one
thing that saved me from getting that virus is a program called Zone Alarm
Pro from Zone labs. WWW.zoneloabs.com. It has a feature that renames
potentially dangerous attachments so that they can't easily be run. In the
last week alone, it has saved my system at least 20-25 times. Just last
Wednesday I woke up to 7 attacks overnight between 11pm and 6 am. All
attachments were renamed by Zone Alarm before they ever made it to the
Norton AV level.
