Look up EA9CD's detailed information on QRZ ... you will find in his details the following:

And on his webpage at http://www.ea9cd.com/ ... "Confirmation of QSL in ways digital single direct road SATSE (2 $, 1 IRC or 2 Euro) "

So he is quite clear about the qsl method for digital...  I had a psk qso with him on Aug 8, 01 and received his card Oct 5, 01.

I periodically upload my log to eqsl ... did not think to exclude this qso and later noticed the rejection.

Hello to all,

And agree with all (Erika, Steve and Ludek)...

Btw I have an eQSL from Jose, true that on SSB mode not PSK31, but I
received it. I dont't know I had a gap in the rerejectin procedure, or he
changed his policy...

Thanks to alert us about VU2TRI. I had another PSK QSO with a VU station on
PSK, VU2KFR who asked also only for direct QSLing. I don't know for how many
IRC's, but let's not assume everybody want to become rich via envelopes...
But I have several very awaited QSLs via bureau (VU2BK, VU2EPR, VU3DJQ).

I had the same email from the 'Webmaster' that Ludek got re: EA9CD direct only via
qrz.com address... I can say the words you want on your behalf Ludek!
I also have an eqsl from Jose, EA9CD, for a 15M psk QSO, but my 20M one was rejected
like Ludek's.
I emailed Jose and expressed my surprise at the 'rejection' and explained that he
had a choice... My QSO with him on 20M is valid, and cannot be 'rejected' on the
grounds of 'direct only'... Jose's choice is to take my eqsl from my log or not...that
is entirely up to him, but I also explained that if wanted my direct qsl card...I
am direct only like him, via qrz.com and please include sufficient return postage
to cover my costs!
If Jose does not choose to reply to valid QSOs on these grounds, he should notify
the Webmaster of his eminent resignation from the eqsl.cc page...and then become
another statistic in the green stamp black hole...
Jose's card is a nice colour picture of himself too! Pity!
If Jose receives this general email to the 070 group, then I say to him on behalf
of all of us, accept eqsl.cc requests or resign! You are defeating the purpose of
this excellent system...

There are other guys in EA9 which will send or answer a qsl via the bureau.
If I hear someone from a country with a functioning bureau I'll never call
him when he says "direct only" - they are just $$$-collectors nothing more.
The worst case so far was VU2TRI, he asks for 4 (four)
IRC for one qsl and offers IRC for sale at a reduced price.
There are several ways to get rich....

Duncan (and Ludek) -

I agree completely. I can understand not wanting to hassle with
bureau QSLs. And I can understand not bothering to check or
respond to eQSLs. But to be a member of eQSL only for the
purpose of rejecting them (to request a direct QSL) is a tacit misuse
of the eQSL system.

Seems to me that this may be an issue that eQSL itself may be
interested in.

Re: psk or PSK

It takes a little bit longer for psk31 to send a CAPITAL LETTER,

To test my theory I typed the same macro in both upper and lower
cases...it is a
surprising difference in speed!

Duncan (and others) -

You are exactly correct. The actual speed of characters is dependent
on the distribution of letters in the text, but on average, capital
letters are 2-3 bits longer than lower-case in the Varicode used in
PSK31.

I think lower-case letters average about 5-6 bits each (averaged over
English text), and upper-case about 8-9. This has the two effects
Duncan mentioned:

1. At a rate of 31 bits per second, lower case will produce about 5
letters per second, versus 4 letters per second for upper case. This
means your message gets through faster.

2. You also only have to get 5 or 6 bits correct for the software to
decode a lower case letter, three less than for an upper case. For a
fixed bit error rate, this means the letter error rate will be lower
for lower case than for upper case.

Finally, there is the "email rule": capital letters are usually used
for emphasis (i.e., shouting), and are sometimes considered rude for
routine use.

Re: psk or PSK

Dave Kjellquist, WB5NHL

Duncan;
Thanks for the tips on psk operation. I learned just a little while back that lower case was faster and a little
less prone to errors. I never run over 5 watts with only indoor dipoles so I need all the help I can get. I have a
couple more tips:

1. Use a spectrum display rather than a waterfall. I can detect and communicate with much weaker signals.
Often, I get a comment that my signal can't be seen on the waterfall yet we will carry on a QSO. Perhaps not
armchair copy, but for errorless copy use IRC.

2. Kill the squelch. I use Hamscope on the "contest mode" only. Yes, I get random characters etc but this is the
same as listening to hiss as your tuning around in SSB or inband noise when your going after that weak one.
Squelch only causes the loss of the weak signals.

Just some thoughts from one of the little guys.

Dave, WB5NHL

psk or PSK

Duncan McMahon <zl3jt@...>

de Jungle Telegraph....Gidday!
I notice there is a penchant by some to type their psk text in the upper case(?)
I suppose I could call myself 'experienced' with this mode and I would like to tell
those that do this 'lazy' typing, that it is more prone to faults if this is psk
mode is done this way...
It takes a little bit longer for psk31 to send a CAPITAL LETTER, and if conditions
are marginal (QSB/QRN/QRM) then this method has a greater error rate. That is it
may be the difference between making it or not making it to the DX station.... Watch
carefully when you know a 'macro' is being sent to you....
To test my theory I typed the same macro in both upper and lower cases...it is a
surprising difference in speed!
You really don't need to try to keep ahead of the buffer...
;-)....Also when trying to 'break' into a QSO, just set a macro with only your callsign
once... then TX in the gap! If you send a long call you will probably be 'doubling'
with someone else and computers can't figure that out!
I do it from far, far away with a fair bit of success in the pile-ups! pssst! Don't
tell anyone!
happy pskin' in 2k2!
