TG Frerichs
Jerry,
FT8 is a weak signal mode, not necessarily a low power mode. It's easy to confuse, but one is on the receiving end and the other is on the transmitting end. Of course, we should only use as much power as necessary to maintain a contact. But that's true of all modes. Tom Frerichs AE0GQ

Re: IC-7300 with Fldigi - setup for PSK-31
Generally if you show Zero ALC your signal will be clean. You can ask the other station for your IMD and S/N and tell from that. The closer the IMD is to the negative value of the S/N, the cleaner the signal. Better yet if the other station is running Fldigi, have them bring up the Spectrum Scope and take a screenshot of it and have them email it to you. Here is a good website that explains how to set your audio drive.

Hey Bob, KK6KMU, thank you. I am NOT a contester or award seeker. I just have fun getting on the air when I can be based on conditions (the atmosphere and mine) HI HI HI. I'll look for you. I am going to be on as much as possible to also help others needing a log contact or just the chat. I started out just making contacts having fun, one day I submitted my log to the log checker and WOW, when did I do all those? HI HI HI Since I try to get on several times a week and daily if possible. You and I have had a few QSOs in the past, but none this year! We will resolve that. Thanks for the help and keep having fun, I am. 73 Geary KE5IRK

IC-7300 with Fldigi - setup for PSK-31
ve3xdb
Good evening,
I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere in this forum, but I just spent 30 minutes searching, and couldn't find anything. I apologize if I have missed something right under my nose. I picked up my new Icom IC-7300 yesterday, and it's a nice rig. Took awhile to figure things out, but I am getting close. I now have it set up for cw, PSK31 and FT8. Historically, I have used Kenwood rigs, so this is quite different. My question. Does anyone have a comprehensive source for optimizing PSK31 on the IC7300, using Fldigi and Flrig. Specifically, I am trying to assess the bandwidth of my transmitted signal, and determine how to clean it up if needed. Best regards, Doug VE3XDB

Thanks John, glad we made the contact. After we finished I could see two other station on the waterfall and within two minutes my waterfall on 20 and 40 were blank! That makes our's special, thanks again. 73 Geary, KE5IRKK

Re: PODXS made ARRL Contest letter !
Leland Sly
FT8 is a weak signal mode not a low power mode. If your audio settings on the computer are set properly you can run as much power as you want on FT8. Someone did an experiment a while ago using FT8. A number of hams all over the country sent the same messages. The wattage varied from 1 watt to 1000 watts. One station received all messages and could not tell what station was using any power setting based on the received signals. So it is not the power that matters...it is the received signal. The sending station may have to use 1000 watts to have the same signal level as another station using 1 watt depending on how the radio waves travel around the earth. 73 Lee N5SLY

FT8 is a weak signal mode. It is not a low power mode.
Because it is an AFSK mode like RTTY rather than a PSK mode, it is possible to run full legal power with an amp without signal distortion. I am sure some of the huge signals I have seen on the waterfall have been with 1500 watt amps.

That is why I stated that we need both old and new stations back on the air. I will try to make some PSK contacts on July 4th.
One thing I like about FT8 is that it provides accurate signal reports in dB for both signals sent and signals received. I have heard other stations with signals as strong as +18 dB S/N ratio. Because I have HOA restrictions on antennas at my QTH, my signals sent are typically 5-10 dB lower than signals received. Most PSK contacts send a generic 599 signal report, even when the signal is difficult to copy. That is not very helpful.
I can run higher power on FT8 than on PSK31 due to the nature of the signals. If I try to run too much power on PSK, the signal will distort. I run 80-100 watts on FT8 and 25-50 watts on PSK. Both FT8 and PSK 31 can decode signals below the noise floor.
Propagation should be good enough to make PSK contacts if people would get on the air. If the bands are open for FT8 contacts, they should also be open for PSK contacts, but it takes two to tango.
I hope to see some of you on the PSK frequencies.

A major problem is everybody thinks the bands are dead and don't bother with PSK. TDW proved that wrong! As I have long said, lack of propagation is due to lack of operation.
I have been on every day this week trying to work anybody, yet, only one 40m contact in the log.
I will be on this afternoon, so look for my PSK in the waterfall. Jim K5SP

Re: South Cook Island
Bob: You have a better path to South Cook because it's mostly water and radio waves tend to do better when they don't have mountains to cross and all sorts of ground clutter to deal with. In one sense youse guys on da left coast have better paths in Asia. Jerry n9avy

We have our first LONP achievers with member numbers greater to or equal to #2787. In addition to their diligent pursuit of this coveted award, their recognition is due especially to the efforts of Milt, N6MG and the member’s upload directly to him. See instruction for that process below.
We also have an excited pack of LONP Seekers in hot pursuit of this traditional first rights award. If you see them, give them a call and spot them on PSKReporter and our reflector:
IMPORTANT NOTICE!! Since the endorsement checker does not properly recognize and give any LONP credit for member numbers that are greater than 2786, this task must now be completed manually by a volunteer. This also means that regardless of your 070 # you will not receive credit for member QSOs with 070 # greater than 2786. You must get with Milt and ask for his assistance to get that credit. If your 070 # is above #2786, you may still apply for LONP by submitting your entire log of member contacts to Milt, N6MG per the Instructions !
