Re: ALC Setup for ICOM 718

You need to drop the mic gain til you show Zero ALC.  Your mic gain is buried in a menu setting but if you're using Fldigi you can adjust the drive from the screen.  Down at the lower right of the screen there is a number between two sets of arrows, defaults at -3.0.  That is a TX attenuator.  Making that number more negative has the same affect as dropping the mic gain.  Using that method is handy because when you go from SSB to PSK Fldigi will adjust your drive.  Since HRD came from a copy of Fldigi it might have a similar feature like that.  When you hit Zero ALC your power out will drop abt 5 to 10%.

Also be aware that you audio in level setting may/will be different on different bands.  I watch my power out meter to make sure I'm actually getting out.  Also if you have a separate device between your rig and computer you may have an adjustment to control you audio in level.  This way you can leave your computer audio level at a set level.

I have an ICOM 718, not that it really matters all that much in this case.   I think you just need to turn down your Audio Drive.  If you are not running a separate sound card device like a Signalink, then things are narrowed down to just one windows audio level setting for your internal soundcard.

Just for fun, I bet if you increased your power out on the ICOM 718,  your ALC levels will also go down, but then you're transmitting at greater power.......

It's like a See Saw effect.

Re: ALC Setup for ICOM 718

Leland Sly

The amount of signal distortion and ALC deflection you get is determined by the speaker volume on your computer.  Turn the speaker volume down and watch the ALC deflection get less and less.  I adjust the speaker volume so I get no ALC deflection at all on the meter on the radio.  Once you are at that point your signal will be clean and have no distortion.

You are both right.

Generic awards (grids, countries, etc) are forever, but LONP is only after membership.

Milt and all ....

The awards for new members are retroactive if the worked required stations on PSK31.  Can't remember the effective date, but it goes back to around 2000 or so...  Jim will correct me.

From checking logs for LONP, 070-2786 and up, I know that LONP starts with your membership date, but just curious about other awards.

Ok, well I had the understanding that when PODXS opened our contests to everyone, then they were eligible for awards. Then my thinking was why would I want to join if I can get an award by being a non-member.  Well, that makes more sense now being open up to everyone but only eligible when they join.

Thanks

Parks on the Air today

John Hendry KG5OIB

I'm working Parks on the Air today from my hometown, San Angelo State Park.  (K-3053).   I'm going to spend the morning working PSK.   Starting with 20 meters, and I may try 17, 15, 10 and even give 12 a go.    I'll even give 6 meters a try when the VHF contest starts at 1800.

I will be spotting thru the pota web page.

It depends on if the software truly means +0 hours or if it means "time in
UK" - which changes during the summer to Brittish Summer Time (BST).
Because of this confusion, it tends to be less confusing to use "UTC" when
you want "zulu time" instead of "GMT" which is way too often mis-interpreted
as the time in UK.

If you want true UTC timezone and the software doesn't give you one - you
can use Iceland as your preferred timezone. Iceland is on UTC year-round.
