Looks like a good day for a contest here.  Forecast for -19 tomorrow morning with 4-6" of snow.  Other than spending some time with my Valentine, should be able to get on for the sprint.  Unless my antenna freezes.

Things are a lot whiter up this way. More fresh powder dropped last night.
This is when I'm glad the antenna is in the attic instead of outside. The
performance isn't as good, but the operation is more consistent. :-)

T-Storms - Valentine Sprint

stan W9SMR

We must be doing very good job advertising the schedule for the Valentine Sprint!

Weather Channel predicts T-Storms for SW FL, Sarasota, starting at 0100 UTC tonite and running all the way thru 2359 UTC. Then cloudy only. Perfectly aligned!

There are a few hours this afternoon that should be without rain/storms so I guess I will put up the jury-rig Inv-L and string the 160m leg across two neighbors' back yards and into a Palm tree there.

Maybe I will find a few safe moments to use my OM Exchange.

Hope to see you on the air!!

Time keeping , QSLs and logging

Jerry N9AVY

If anyone is keeping time in local time rather than Zulu/GMT/UTC , they are doing themselves a disservice !

If you work DX or anything else, logs should be kept in Zulu/GMT/UTC which should all be pretty much the same.  If you use LoTW, Eqsl or any other QSL service, you may not get all you confirmations/QSLs because of time discrepincies .

As a QSL manager many, many years ago, I handled around 25,000 QSL requests each year. This was in the days before online logs and everything was done by checking paper cards against the DX station's logbooks.  I bent over backwards trying to confirm each QSO, but times were so screwed up that many hundreds of cards went in the garbage unconfirmed. This was not the DX stations fault, but rather that of uninformed operators.

Things are so much easier today with online logs like LoTW, Eqsl, etc. that only excuses are 1) you never worked him, 2) your call was copied incorrectly (a.k.a. BUSTED) or 3) poor record keeping by requestor.

This is mostly for newer operators who may not be aware of proper procedures.  You "old timers" should already know all this.  Yes, I made a few mistakes when I started out many long years ago.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

I'm pretty mercenary about spending 4 months living on an Aleut Indian owned island, population about 450 folks with their tight knit island society. Believe me, I wasn't there pro bono by any means. Maybe in another 50 years or so I can tell you what I was doing there.
The birds? There are several species of birds that can only be viewed on St. Paul Is. Those species' summer on St Paul Is. and winter on the Kommander Is. of Russia, owned by the Russian military. Nobody goes to the Kommander's for anything, especially seismic boats surveying the ocean floor.
Check out the "Red Faced Cormorant".
One note, I had my brand new Kenwood TS-430 and a small MFJ wire tuner with me, and could run JA & HL stations on 30m cw, 24/7. It was fun, and on my return home to So. Louisiana, there was a shoebox of bureau cards to answer.
And all this time everybody thought I was just a pretty face :-) .
See you in the Valentine Sprint!

The web page says "CQ Valentines Sprint". Stan's recommendation and Jerry's example say "CQ 070 Valentine Sprint".
