Re: KC3EF Winter Road Trip

Dick,
Sandy and I are both lifelong birdwatchers. In fact, we met on St Paul Is., in the Pribillof Is. chain right smack-dab in the middle of the Bering Sea.
Here's some contact info for the Galveston Ornithological Society. They have a large friendly group there.
Contact info: galornsoc4@...
Have a safe trip.

The xyl and I are heading out around Feb 19th for a bird watching adventure in TX.  I am planning on operating from some of the grids I need for my goal of activating as many grids as I can.  We are going thru EM51, EM41, EM42, EM53, EM42, EM32, and EM31.  We will be taking the more Southern route thru LA so we will hit EL59 and EL39 both ways according to the current plan.  Most of our time will be spent around the Galveston area in EL29.  I don't think we will be hitting any grids further West on this trip.  Remind me of any grids 070 members need.  We also plan on activating St. Catherine Creek NWR (K-0392) and the Natchez Trace Parkway National Parkway (K-0642).  I will try to post when we will be in each area.

Valentine's Day

Jerry N9AVY

Just made a long trip through deep snow to tower out back to check 40/80m sloper.  Big old U-bolt is blocking access to coax connector on remote coax switch and it's too cold plus walking with cane is tough in deep, crusty snow.  So it would asppear that I'm outta luck for contest unless I give up WARC dipole.

This started when antennas were iced over and I tried to clean up remote coax switch, but dropped it off bench (ol' butterfingers !), but wrecked at least one relay - drat !  Would have ordered another one, but MFJ/Ameritron is out of parts to buid them and distributors are out of stock as well. If looking at Greedbay, the prices are crazy. Located another switch from a friend who has it sitting on shelf for years and it's mine but it's a long drive to get it; however, since hospital episode last month I'm not driving at present (self-enforced).

If by some miracle I get the dual running this weekend, I might be heard, but it a longshot.  Another trip to backyard with all this crunchy snow may do me in if I donn't freeze first (temp. 25F maybe, but feels much colder ! Was 17F earlier.) Brrrrrrr !!!!

Wished I could have done antenna maintenance in the Fall like I planned, but y'all know how plans work out. Emoji  "The best laid plans of mice & men oft times go astray."

Hope everyone has a good time on the 14th and makes lots of contacts.  Keep feeding the crazy checker because I need more work !

LONP Notice!

Jim K5SP

LONP Notice!

The endorsement checker for LONP is broken.  It will not recognize any contact with a member number greater than 2786.  The checker also is not updating the lonp data files with any new log submissions.

Manual intervention was required, and, we are proud to announce that all logs submitted after 1 July 2020 have been researcehed for LONP data, and the historical files have been updated to reflect the contacts LONP members made from 1 July 2020 to 9 Feb 2021.  If you submitted a log prior to 1 July and have NOT submitted a log since then, then please resubmit your log so that the data files can be brought up to date.  When the new software that is being developed is completed, tested, and deployed to the website, LONP operations will return to normal.

You will notice that the Members of LONP page has been updated to include all the new members, and, the new totals for everyone.  The LONP Honor Roll has also been updated accordingly.

Plans are in the works for processing contacts greater than 2786, and because it will be manually done, the steps being put in place MUST be followed to the letter!  These specific rules will be published soon.

 Hi Bo,
re...skimmers
Couple years back our club decided on 'one' FD logger N1MM+
Some of the ole-timers (I'll be 80 in Mar) found the learning curve steep
FD 2018 logging was a disaster
FD 2019 our 'linked' logger was a delight
Of course FD 2020 was virtual but our 'individual' loggers worked well
FD 2021 yet tbd ... but, a recent series of posts that helped me better understand skimmers

 https://groups.io/g/N1MMLoggerPlus/topic/cwskimmer_and_the_rbn/74874329?p

side note... JE3HHT's MMVARI engine works very well running under N1MM+

Just trying to delay "old timers' setting in.
I must admit I'm awfully disappointed because can't motivate any of the local folks into anything.
I got one old fart older than me into FT8 and he beat me to DXCC FT8.
I'm optomistic that I can do it,  once I fully understand the virtual audio cable setup.
I've pasted the W1AW schedule up so I'll have test signals nightly.

Oops !  Forgot to add that the W9CA skimmer was on Telenet so that all members could use it if they had password.  The antenna was my  Butternut HF-9V which allowed the skimmer to monitor all bands at once.  It was a neat set up and I really miss it.

The local group I'm a member of used a skimmer for a few years. They were quite sucessful on FD (3A) and won it 2-3 running.  We had a couple of ops who were very good at around 40 wpm and the skimmer at a members QTH fed the FD ops calls as fast as they could copy.

I would use skimmer frequently during the year to chase CW DX.  It was on the air for a ew years until K9WMN, it' creator, passed away. Afterwards it was disassembled and sent to W9CA for storage and reassembly. Unfortunately that never happened as W9CA moved to TN, but the skimmer may be resurrected someday.

It was a blast while it was working !

Bo, I commend your efforts on assembling another skimmer !!!

Interested in RTTY & PSK non-contest activity I found very few spotters/skimmers for them on PSKreporter.
Wanting to learn a bit, I decided to make one! I'm 80 and still trying to learn something new every day.
I've set up a RTL-SDR, HDSDR, OmniRig, & RCKskimmer and have actually captured one RTTY station!

Questions:
1. Is there a way to run it using V2.1 of OmniRig that is required for the latest HDSDR? RCK skimmer appears to work OK with the V1. 1 version with the matching HDSDR.
2. Does anyone have a useful frequency chart/setup for RCK skimmer??   And any of the useful settings for the program?
3. Or just a link to the ranges to scan for PSK & RTTY?
    Is this close enough:  1838-1843 kHz, 3580-3600 kHz, 7040-7100 kHz, 10120-10150 kHz, 14080-14099 kHz, 18100-18110 kHz, 21080-21100 kHz, 24910-24930 kHz, 28080-28100 kHz.
4. I'm unable to connect to their cluster dl4rck Anyone know about it?

Again, the main purpose is to find Active RTTY & PSK stations FOR QSOs mostly. And learn a bit. I may add a CW skimmer, mostly to find my needed DXCCs.
I run a local copy of VE7CC on my PC with my desired filters set.  So I wonder if I can only send the CW spots to it for filtering for use.?

Any info, links appreciated. Any groups?
If enough are interested I can share my collection of info on Google Drive.

PS. I've temporarily replaced the RTL-SDR with my RSP 2pro. to eliminate some stumbling parts.
