2021 Ham Radio Resolutions

Everybody...
Any Amateur Radio/070 Club resolutions for 2021?
Me? Yip:
1) Work on my LONP count.
2) Better discipline for our operating events participation.
3) Get on 160m in a proper fashion.
4)  Add 070 Club info to my macro's.
Yours?

BTW Barry, you are the first ever recipient (to my knowledge) of the "I Tried" award.

Congratulations (I think), or maybe Condolences!

Now Barry...We'll arm wrestle for the "Low Man/Woman on the Totem Pole" award.
Of late, it seems that as excited as I get before one of our operating events, come the event, I just don't spend enough time with the "Butt-in-the-Chair" macro as I should!

Anybody else?

Contest Certificates

Jim K5SP

Earlier this year a poll was conducted, and the vast majority of the membership said that email receipt of certificates for contests was okay.

As a result the advisory board decided that all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place certificates for each contest would be sent via email.  Top Dawg certificates would be mailed to include the Rollo Keychain award for that prestigious placing.

Today, emails were sent to those members receiving certificates for the Firecracker Sprint. The certificates were sent to the email address on file in our database. If you expected, and did not receive a certificate it is most likely because your email address changed, and you did not notify the club as to the change.

I apologize for the short message with the email, but for each contest I have to create 13 certificates, and that means 13 emails.  In the next few days certificates for the contests after the Firecracker sprint will be created an mailed.

Congratulations to those who excelled in the contests.

This morning I finally work my old friend Mike , KA9DFI, on PSK31 (and RTTY) on 40m.  He hasn't been on for years due to computer and/or rig problems. He vey difficult to work because there is about 25 miles between us as well as the Marengo Ridge which is somewhat difficult for RF to get over at times. Plus he's  on a vertical and I'm horizontal.

Anyhow, had a great time working #0437 !  Thanks Mike !

BTW, Mike & I have been friends for over 30 years.  He got his Extra when I was still messing around as a Tech. Smart fellow who holds 2 Doctorates and is working on a 3rd...

In some of the past years, we've offered the Christmas Run endorsement/sticker for making 25 QSOs on Christmas Day (UTC). This Endorsement has not been offered for several years. So this year because of COVID-19 and possibly fewer family gatherings, it seemed appropriate to Steve, W3HF to again offer this challenge to Members only.

- Make 25 PSK31 QSOs on 25 December 2020 (0000z to 2359z) on any HF band (160m through 6m) to claim the "2020 Christmas Run" version.

- Make one QSO per station per band. That means the same station on another band is a second QSO, but a second QSO on the same band is a dupe.

- No required exchange, though perhaps Christmas greetings would be appropriate.

Since we are having so many issues with our Endorsement Checker software, Steve has offered to manually check your submitted log and issue the award.

- To enable manual review, please
     - Extract only PSK31 QSOs from 25 December 2020
     - Extract only the date/time/callsign/frequency/mode fields
     - Export to a text file (.txt or .prn) or a .csv. (Definitely not an ADIF)
     - Submissions that don't follow these instructions may be rejected

Save your log file to a convenient folder and include your CALL in the file name.

Then - Send your log extract to w3hf@... by 1 January 2021.

DO NOT submit your log to the Endorsement Checker

- To help others, we encourage members to share (on the email reflector) the steps for how to accomplish a log extract like this for various logging programs.

Hello all!  Yours truly will be operating as W4F celebrating the first voice transmission in 1900 this weekend.

If you want to lock in a PSK qso with W4F, feel free to text me at 571-225-6180 or email @ dontay155@....  Otherwise, I'll be on/off the normal psk watering holes over the weekend.

Summary info below. Full details at qrz.com

This ground breaking transmission was made in December,1900 by Reginald Aubrey Fessenden on Cobb Island, MD, between two masts 50 feet high and over a mile apart.  The first successful transmission of intelligible speech by electromagnetic waves was a critical milestone in the development of radio.  Further developments using a carbon microphone resulted in Fessenden becoming known as the “Father of Amplitude Modulation”.  More on Fessenden can be found at: Reginald Fessenden - Wikipedia

Hi, folks!

There is a wonderful book about Fessenden by his Wife (I think). It tells how he told telegraphers on ships to listen for a Christmas message at a particular time.  Instead of the usual dots and dashes, the Sparks heard actual music and then Fessendon singing a Carol (He couldn't find anyone else to do it!).  It must have been amazing!
