Congrats to Alan - KA5VZG

Rick - N7WE

I've been following the adventures (and chats) of the group that have been pursuing the 24/7 Endorsement at all hours of the night.  This morning I see by the Progress Checker that Alan - KA4VZG is the first of the bunch to complete that crazy endorsement!  Congrats Alan!  Well done.  It is a major accomplishment and takes dedication and coffee...lots of coffee!  There are several more who are pushing to complete it.  Who will be next?

Thanks for the Great Pumpkin Contest. I haven't worked any contests in a while and was happy for the 3rd place considering I only worked it for 2 hours!

Re: Band Plan

Mike W4BZM

I think this weekend was an excellent demonstration that the IARU Regions need to do better coordination on band plans for digital operation in the HF bands.

I was very frustrated in trying to maintain a QSO with WB2MLY on 7.072 MHz, because we were getting QRM from voice stations in Europe working the CW SSB contest.  Out of curiosity, I looked up the IARU Region 1 band plan for 40 meters (see https://www.iaru-r1.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/hf_r1_bandplan.pdf)  .  It reads:

7.040 - 7.047  Preferred mode:  Narrow band modes , Usage:  Digimodes
7.047 - 7.050  Preferred mode:  Narrow band modes, Usage:  Digimodes, automatically controlled data stations (unattended)
7.060 - 7.100  Preferred mode:  All modes,  Usage :  SSB contest preferred  (7.070 "Digital voice Centre of Activity")
7.130 - 7.175  Preferred mode:  All modes,  Usage:  SSB contest preferred  (7.165 "Image Centre of Activity")
7.175 - 7.200  Preferred mode:  All modes,  Usage:  SSB contest preferred, Priority for intercontinental activity.

So while those of us in IARU Region 2 observe 7.000 to 7.125 as an RTTY/data band, and 7.072 as a PSK-31 domain, that is not the case for our European/African neighbors.  Fortunately, I haven't experienced a lot of SSB QRM on 7.072 except on international contest weekends, but it's a discrepancy I was not aware of until tonight.  I mention it because others may be as unaware as I was.

Great Pumpkin 160 M Sprint Results

stan W9SMR

This year we hoped that 160M conditions would improve and participation would increase, and our hopes were rewarded!

This year there were 24 logs submitted with 8 High Power, 9 Medium Power, 4 Low Power and 3 QRP. 16 States and 1 Province were worked. This is up significantly from last year’s 11 logs.

Top Dawg and 1st in Medium Power 50W was Stan, W9SMR/9 of Fremont, IN, with 21 QSOs, 13 states and 315 points. This is a rare win for Stan. He credits his Jury-rigged Inv-L for his success. That, and a successful push to grab the rare Top Band 20 Endorsement.

Second Place in Medium Power 50W was John, KC2RXS, of Riner, VA with 18 QSOs, 12 states and 252 points. Third Place was Randy, W4RTT of Covington, KY  with 17 QSOs, 11 states and 221 points.

First Place in the High Power 100W category was Bob, KF3AA, of Huntington, MD with 19 QSOs, 12 states and 266 points. Bob was Top Dawg and first Place in the Jay Hudak 80M Sprint this year. With this he will continue his climb to the RC3 Championship.

Second Place in the High Power 100W category was Tom, W8TOM of Atlanta, MI with 15 QSOs, 11 states and 195 points.  Third Place was Charles, VA3TTB of Holland Landing, ON with 12 QSOs, 9 states and 120 points. Special mention for Barry, VA7GEM who did his best to break thru the noise from BC. Don’t give up, Barry, better days are ahead. Thanks for being in there.

Repeating his 2019 First Place win in the Low Power 25 W category was Steve, W3HF of Collegeville, PA with 10 QSOs, 8 states and 100 points. Steve is also hotly chasing the RC3 Championship.

Second Place in Low Power 25W was recent new member Rick, WA8UMT of Novi, MI with 6 QSOs, 5 states and 36 points. Third Place was recent new member, David, WA3LXD of Ft. McCoy, FL with 4 QSOs, 4 states and 20 points.

Hard to believe, but we had 3 successful entries in QRP Power. In First Place QRP Power, was Don, KM4UDX of Vienna, VA with 10 QSOs, 8 states and 100 points.

Second Place QRP was non-member Joseph, W1TW of Attleboro, MA with 4 QSOs, 3 states and 16 points. In Third Place was Peter, NN9K of Colona, IL with 3 QSOs, 3 states and 12 points. He was the first place QRP winner in this year’s Jay Hudak 80M Sprint. He is also on the short list of RC2 Championship.

The PODXS “All Amateurs Welcome” policy continues to enhance our overall experience. Special thanks are due to Steve, AA8SW of Cincinnati, OH; Homer, N5JDT of Alamogordo, NM; and Joseph, W1TW of Attleboro, MA. Thank you all for participating and we look forward to greeting you soon as a new members.

Note that the Top Dawg Certificate and Rollo Dog Tag will be reserved exclusively for members.

Thanks to all who submitted logs.  Stickers will be in the next mailing.

We again are deeply indebted to David, K9DWR, who established the upload link and parsed the contest results. Thank You, David!

It is not too early to start thinking about your participation in the next PODXS 070 Event, the Triple Play Low Band Sprint. This is another great opportunity to put some 160M  Q’s in the log for the Top Band 20 Endorsement.

I have been remiss and missed a bunch of these slots.  I'll be trying to get some 05,06 and 0700 contacts over the weekend and next week.
I'll set an alarm and be up most of the night tonight starting at 0500.  And back on for the 08,09, maybe the 1000 slots.

Thanks for helping out with getting the squares filled in.

24/7 Endorsement - thanks and encouragement

GA - Bob - K4VBM

Hi All,

Many thanks to Bob KK6KMU and Alan KA5VZG for putting together the schedule and being there to enable
those of us missing the many late night and early morning slots for the 24/7 endorsement to get them.  I will admit that for
some of those QSOs so far, my eyes were foggy and my brain was still asleep, but the fun and accomplishment was
always there, and I was missing all of them before this.

I know that I have filled many holes so far, and also had a number a QSOs with other members
of the 070 club which is also helping me in my LONP quest.  So nice to meet more of the club members.   Thanks to everyone that has participated so far, especially all my QSO partners!

I have a special announcement/request:

I missed last week's Friday schedule for the 0600 and 0700 UTC hour slots.

Because of that, I am going to make the effort to be on from 0630z to 0730z in an attempt to fill them and hand
them out for others that may have missed those slots.

I will be on both 40m and 80m during those times for each of those parts of the hour slot, looking for a club member.
I will also be monitoring the 070 club 24/7 groups.io chat that can be accessed by this URL:

https://070club.groups.io/g/main/chat/7056

(You do have to have a login to groups.io to access the chat,
It really helps to be in the chat to let people know you are there and what band you are currently on.)

Looking forward to seeing you during the rest of this undertaking, and thanks again to KK6KMU and KA5VZG!

73 and stay safe,

Bob Hensey

text me at 571-225-6180 with a head's up if you want to try. I've had great success doing most all the digital modes with my qrp uBITX radio to other QRP's.  Of course, a good antenna really helps us lower power wieners.
