Re: Debian 10 linux + Fldigi + Signalink USB + Kenwood TS-570D/G

Hi Doug !

Welcome to the grup !!!

Have a TS-570S as a back up but have never got it running on PSK.

The main rig here is a Yaesu FT-1000MP with MixW 3.2 and WIN7. Have had a similar problem that you described. It sometimes won't key up and I just hit transmit again, maybe once or twice and all is okay. It's a minor annoyance, but I've learned to live with it.

BTW, I approve the awards you submitted on Saturday and they are on my list.

Before writing this message, I reviewed the group message history to see if there was an issue similar to mine, but couldn't find anything.  Maybe someone has some ideas?

The issue:

  • 9 times out of 10, the PSK-31 transmission works perfectly.  However, 1 out of 10 times, I hear the Signalink click, the red light comes on, but there is no power out on the power meter.  Sometimes, it's 30 seconds into the transmission before noticing that no RF is getting out.  When it happens, the transmission needs to be stopped, and restarted.

Here is my setup:

  • Kenwood TS-570 D/G
  • Signalink USB
  • Debian 10.4 (stable branch)
  • Flrig 1.3.42 (old, but it is the version that comes with the stable branch)
  • Fldigi 4.1.01 (old, but it is the version that comes with the stable branch)

More background:

  • I hadn't used PSK for a couple of years, and set everything up again, about a month ago.
  • Since going off the air, I have switched computers.  I was running Debian 8 or 9 stable, and the stable version of Fldigi and Flrig.  I don't recall ever having this issue before.
  • Spent quite a bit of time over the past couple of days, tweaking the settings, and the following seems to work best.  However, no combination of settings were found that would address the issue.
  • Current settings:
    • Kenwood TS-570D/G
      • menu 33 - Input level for digital set to 1
      • menu 34 - Output level for digital set to 3
    • Signalink USB
      • Jumper module SLMOD13K set to position 1
      • Internal jumpers JP2, JP3 and JP4 not connected
      • TX @ 10 o'clock
      • RX @ 3 o'clock
      • DLY @ 12 o'clock
    • Pulse Audio (pavucontrol)
      • Output devices PCM2904 Audio Codec Analog Stereo set at 50%
      • Input devices PCM2904 Audio Codec Analog Stereo set at 100%
    • These settings work well, produce about 20 watts out on my Kenwood, and I receive good reports.  Just doesn't work 10% of the time.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful.

Stay cool, and stay safe!

Best regards,

Doug VE3XDB

That's not ringing any bells for me, but...

I recommend asking in the mailing list for fldigi linux support:
https://groups.io/g/linuxham

I also recommend trying building from source. The instructions are pretty
detailed and there are often fixes that get addressed that stable won't see for
a long time.

https://sourceforge.net/p/fldigi/wiki/debian_howto/

It's also possible to run stable alongside your own build, so it's easy enough
to go back if you want/need to.

Bill:

Understand your feeling on the subject. However, some operators have a long history with that call and hate to give it up.

KH6RF/4 is operating from U.S. 4th District which is a legitimate identifier for that call sign. If anyone doesn't know what /4 stands for and claims it as Hawaii while chasing awards that is their problem... or the software they use. There are many others using KH, KL, and other off shore prefixes. A friend of mine locally is WL7CTA here in Illinois, he received the call while station with military in Alaska. It a very distinctive call ... Chicago Transit Authority (suffix phonetics on phone.

The days when one worked a station in 1st FCC district ME, NH, VT, CT, MA , DE , RI) are long gone thanks to FCC. The station one works with a W1 call sign may be in Florida or anywhere else in USA. This is because we live in a mobile society with people moving all over the place.

This is a sad fact we have to live with. Don't count on your software nor QRZ to be 100% accurate. Often when I work a station I get the feeling that he isn't paying attention. More interested in contact than accuracy or figuring his software will insert everything into log.

Had a submission this morning for Hawaii with call of AB0JM and QRZ says he's in Hawaii. Go figure !

APE Plans Due

DAVE KB3RAN 1692/381

It's good to see all the chat about grid locators for cell phones popping up.  They are a great way to find out exactly where you are when out grid chasing.  And also for when you do your August PSK31  Expedition to pinpoint exactly where it is you're operating from.  August is just around the corner and aren't you ready to get outside and do some remote operations?  I know I am.  I'm getting the camper and my portable shack geared up for some much needed woods time.  I hope you are, too.

Let me know soon of your planned operations that are 20 miles from home and I'll make sure they get posted to the PODSX 070  website so everyone can tune in and help you rack up the contacts. You only have to make 20 contacts on HF PSK31 to win an APE Award certificate.  Other club members assisting get an 'attaboy.'

Send your plans to ape@...

I know there's a park, scenic outlook, boat ramp or summit near you just waiting for you to set up or camp out and get on the air.

Many (perhaps all?) Garmin GPS receivers can display the Maidenhead Grid for your current location. I used mine to verify that I was, indeed, in CN98 for my recent Grid-pedition.
