Date

Endorsement Daze #3 – LONP and TRI-WARC – Saturday, June 20

stan W9SMR

This is our 3rd Endorsement Daze Event. IT IS NOT A CONTEST. This activity is intended to promote more on-air time among members and provide targeted opportunities to achieve specific PODXS Endorsements.

This 3rd Endorsement Daze activity will target LONP and TRI-WARC

First Objective - LONP - If you are a new member, this is your Golden Opportunity!  You can start accumulating toward that 100 member contacts required for LONP Membership - Currently, only 431 of our 2,771 members have qualified.

We know that this Event helps. As reported a year ago, while participating in Daze #1, newcomer, Mike W4BZM (PODXS # 2653), managed to raise his LONP count from 11 to 20. A year later, prior to the Three Day Weekend Contest (TDW), he had 96 members logged. After the contest he had 104 members logged.  Mission successful.

Second objective – TRI-WARC
To stimulate PSK31 on the WARC bands, the 070 Club offers the "TRI-WARC" pennant. Work three different stations on each of the WARC bands (30M, 17M and 12M) for a total of 9 contacts.

Given the requirement for 9 QSOs and 3 different bands, this is probably one of the most difficult Endorsements. But recent experience during the TDW showed that making a call on 10M and 15M, even 6M can result in a QSO. You may not make it all the way, but hopefully you can start the path.

Suggested frequencies for the WARC bands:

30M: 10.140 MHz,

17M: 18.097 MHz,

12M: 24.920 MHz

Art, K7DWI (#2518) has seriously studied the summer propagation and believes that starting now you can expect Es conditions almost every day from 9 am to 2 pm, and again from 5 pm to 8 pm your local Daylight Saving Time.

You just need to get on and make the call! It’s time to test the propagation!

Our Endorsement Daze #3 event is planned for 18 hours in hopes of focusing our time. There is nothing critical about this timing. Get on when you can and the conditions are favorable and enjoy the event.

Starting: 10:00 UTC on Saturday, June 20 (Saturday, June 20 at 06:00 EDT)

Ending:  03:59 UTC on Sunday, June 21 (Saturday, June 27 at 23:59 EDT)

Join the fun and enjoy…Call: CQ CQ 070 Daze de (Ur Call)

Upload your complete log promptly to the Online Endorsement Checker

Your LONP total will be displayed under the 070-LONP tab. Your TRI-WARC progress will be shown in the “Completed” or “In Progress” or “Not Started” column on your “070 Award Progress” page. Click on the “Target” column to see what you need to finish the award.

As you see activity on the waterfall, be sure to “SPOT” those calls and your own to PSKReporter and on the Reflector. Pick your operating times and Bands to optimize short, medium and long distance contacts.

It’s OK to QSO with non-members, too. Just show them how much fun the

070 PODXS Club can be and welcome them to join us.

After you enjoy the Daze #3, please send me your comments and suggestions to improve this Event.

The ADIF standard actually requires upward compatibility and allows for _import_ of
.adif files based on older specs with deprecated fields.

http://adif.org/310/ADIF_310.htm#Upward_Compatibility

    II.A. Upward Compatibility
From one version of ADIF to the next, Data Types, Enumerations, Fields, and
Formats shall be upwardly compatible, meaning that an ADIF file compliant with
ADIF version N will comply with any future ADIF version M where M>N.

    II.B. Deprecation
Deprecated fields and enumeration values shall be accepted when importing an
ADIF file, but shall not be emitted when exporting an ADIF file.

So old, crusty adif files should always be able to be read and parsed.  In
practice, I have rarely seen drastically out-of-date file formats and I code
for finding PSK31 in mode and submode fields.

I know how to delete one of the dupes - it’s pretty easy. I was wondering if
I *should* delete it before submission. On the off chance that any contest
official might cross-check logs, which one would the other party submit?

If it’s no great hardship on the checker (Thanks David), I think I’m inclined
to take Bob’s (AC2FA) advice and just leave it.
The current round of coding does not do any check logging. Whatever is in the
log is what will get scored. I do have plans to extend the checking to find
the log matches, but that's later on down the roadmap. The first order of
business is being able to score it at all. ;-)

An interesting article written by Tomas, NW7US, who has been around a while. It's good to know that the IARU (international) has been involved because they may carry more weight than ARRL. This bears watching for future developments, if any. The FT-8 guys might get sent to the woodshed....

Congratulations Mike!

It seems like the first 100 are the hardest to get these days, because band conditions are not conducive to operators being on the air.  Reaching the next plateau will come sooner than you realize, because TDW proved that when people are on the air, contacts CAN be made.

Looking forward to you receiving another sticker for LONP contacts.

Re: Sending logs ???

Stephen Melachrinos

Not all scoring systems are set up the same way.

Back when PSK31 was invented, it was (for a while) the only PSK mode. So the ADIF standard called it a MODE and defined the MODE as PSK31. This results in an ADIF entry that includes the following:

<MODE:5>PSK31

After a while, PSK submodes proliferated. For a while, they were added as additional modes, like

<MODE:5>PSK63
<MODE:6>PSK125

Eventually there became so many that the ADIF standard was changed to define all the variants as part of a PSK "MODE" family, with defined (and required) submodes. That results in the above three becoming

<MODE:3>PSK<SUBMODE:5>PSK31
<MODE:3>PSK<SUBMODE:5>PSK63
<MODE:3>PSK<SUBMODE:6>PSK125

Many systems still accept the now-deprecated MODE of PSK31, in order to retain compatibility with older logging software. And the KJ4IZW software (upon which our current but soon-to-be-nonfunctional) award scorer does. Eventually, I would expect the backward-compatibility t end, so every ADIF file with have to use both MODE and SUBMODE to define PSK31.

I should have been clearer.  When you export from HRD Logbook, export it to just an ADI file.  In the Fields to Export, use the  ADIF Only button.  Choose a file name and save somewhere on your computer - not to ADIF master.  There is no need to strip anything out before you upload your saved file to the contest checker.

Sherri -

If you use another logging program, just put the 070 number in a "Notes" of an "Exchange" field. This contest is being scored manually, and David says he'll find the number pretty much anywhere you put them.
