Thanks.  Getting a few QSOs.

Using horizontal dipole as it seems to work better on 20M some days.

Really interesting stuff for antenna designs

Rick - N7WE

There is some really interesting stuff going with antenna designs - merging optics with conventional RF technology.

"Technically, the antenna transmission draws upon a first-of-its-kind beam-forming optical lens engineered to send precise beams to several differently placed satellites at the same time, without using the entire circuitry of the system. While phased array antennas continue to be highly effective and widely operational, Billman explained that the new multi-beam antenna is quite different in that it can sustain its power and signal fidelity across multiple bands at the same time. Phased array antennas, Billman said, not only rely upon a wider aperture which consumes more of the circuitry and electrical power, but decrease in power and effectiveness when broken into two beams simultaneously. Whereas the optical lenses, designed to empower the single antenna functionality, do not need to all operate at the same time. Several different beam transmissions can connect with several satellites at once; the patented beam-forming system can connect satellites of different sizes, operating at various altitudes within different orbits. Phased arrays also, by contrast, require a larger form factor which consumes more real estate, and electrical power, on a surface ship. Also, when it comes to warfare operational resiliency, several more narrowly configured, yet dispersed, electronic signals emit a lower and less detectable signature than larger, phased array emissions."

You can read the compete articles here. 1st LINK   And more info here 2nd LINK

The Navy is already testing some of these new antennas for combat ships that will allow simultaneous multiple links over multiple bands on mulitple satellites.  And these optical antennas are supposed to me much more stealthy than the current large multiple phased arrays currently used for onboard satellite communications.  Wonder if this tech can give a rebirth to AMSAT?  Radio keeps evolving!

Well , it looks like I jumped the gun, put the horse before the cart etc

From the replies I've had so far; it looks like it was just a good idea

but not going to work as planned. I'll put the idea on the back burner

and maybe, it'll work at a different time.

Thanks for the feed back

I believe this was the original intent of the contest group.
It kept all us fanatics looking for a contact away from the regular group
and that way we did not overload the members tat prefer email.

Re: 2020 e-skip season soon!

Hi Rick,

Will be looking for you on 6 when you get your antenna.  I have mixed feelings on the hexbeam.  Sometimes it does the trick on making the contact and sometimes my wire antennas are better.  My hex is only up about 28 feet so that is not the optimum height.  One of my friends in MD that has one up about 60 ft told me not to expect miracles with it, but it does null out some of the signals.  One of the criteria when we purchased the house was we could keep the RV on the property and there were no antenna restrictions.  The only county restriction is that towers are limited to 80ft and have to be in the back yard.

Dale and I were in high school back in the 60's in upstate New York.  The electric shop teacher got the school system to purchase a NC303 and Johnson Viking Invader 2000 for the radio club along with a novice station and 6 and 2mtr Clegg am transceivers.  It was really nice being a poor high school student and get to operate first class equipment.  Made my ARC5 receiver and home brew transmitter look kind of sad, hi hi.    A group of us purchased surplus transceivers from WWII tanks, but when we got them they must have been made for tanks going to Russia, since the controls were all in the Cyrillic alphabet.  We did finally figure out what each control did and had 20 watt am HF transceivers.  We enough musing, I guess I should turn on the radio and check the bands. Have not seen much psk activity when I have checked.

I'd like to ask a fundamental question: Have people tried the groups.io chat
room and found it deficient? Or is it just that no one (including me) seems
to remember that it's available? After the last interchange, I discovered
The main failing of the Groups.io chat is that it's buried in groups.io
and needs a web browser to function. Web apps, IMO, suck. Especially
when screen real estate is at a premium, having yet another tab or
window to manage makes this a non-starter for me. This is complicated
even further when you throw in everything else that's clamoring for your
attention; Teams, slack, discord, the litany of IM protocols, etc. I
tried the groups.io chat when we first started setting it up, and it
went by the wayside because the ONLY way to use it is by logging into
the webpage.

I don't use the groups.io web page; I read messages via email. I do
most things in console windows because I prefer a terminal window where
I can aggregate things and still see multiple topics at once (98% of my
chat communication is within an IRC client). Part of it is maximizing
my screen space, part of it is a general distaste for most web
applications' disregard for that same space. It would be nice if more
developers would realize not everyone has a 40" 4K screen for their
computer.

Chat room thoughts

Jerry N9AVY

Why should we set up a chat room when there are more important things to do like getting the club software back up and running. A chat room now is just a distraction like "Hey a shiny new toy !". It should be added after everything is back up and running.

Using a chat room to make more endorsements is a good idea, but with the current system of putting endorsements on a spread sheet, additional endorsements en masse is probably not something I would like to see at this time. The current list is over 200 endorsements and it takes time each day to glean through all them; plus with a list that large there is a possibility I could miss someone's endorsement. The automated list is easier to work with and nothing gets missed.

I'm all for the Chat Rom , BUT after we're back up and running 100% !

I would prefer the SKCC chatroom format since I am very familiar with the it and use it a lot, in fact it stays open 24/7 on my machine.
