When replying to a thread, should I be clicking "Reply on Line" or "Reply to Group".  Guess that could be the reason for the show about "Frustration" thread.  No one is seeing the bakground postings???

Okay, let's squelch this thread before it turns into a war!

We all understand the frustration of the poor propagation causing operators to utilize modes that are designed for low signal strength.   We all don't agree/operate on all modes, just the ones we like, so let's stop picking on those that are willing to communicate by any means.  I do not operate in the voice portion of the 7MHZ band because of the "lids" that use SSB, and that is my freedom of choice, as operating FT modes is anyone elses.

So, please let's just let this thread die!

In my experience this works and is a good plan.  Sadly many hams, when the pickings are slim, get online and complain about how FT8 is ruining the entire universe.  Why they consider this more fun than FT8 I don’t know, as the process of complaining about FT8 appears to be about the same as letting your computer solve your crossword for you.

Now I'm confused.  I do my own crosswords, and I like to rag chew on PSK31.

Operating FT-8 is like the computer doing the crossword.

Hi Bill,

I just start off as if it was me that was calling CQ and the other op never knows.  I am not impatient with them.

I think you are right about the macros, though, because it does seem to be ops that don’t venture out beyond macros that do this.

In contests it’s a little more confounding because search and pounce macros and running macros should be predetermined.

You would think we were past that point and they would just get into the QSO without responding like I was the one calling CQ.

I see this in contests too - which is only slightly less annoying that stations that answer a "CQ Test" with the exchange before you acknowledge them.

OK, off the soapbox now…

When I got my general and set up a very modest station I was not able to make very many phone contacts and I found that quite frustrating.  After doing some looking around I found ft8 and it filled a void.  Making contacts in Peru, Japan, Australia, and Russia kept me in the hobbie.  It was the stuff I had heard about as a kid that had originally got my interest.

I eventually updated my station and really enjoy the ragchew of PSK but when the band is in bad shape or the pickens are slim I change modes and continue to radio.  That's the important part to me,  radioing.

Two more cents,

While we're al primarily PSK operators here, it seems that some of have differing opinions on FT/JT modes and they're entitled to them, just as we are to opposing opinions.

We can argue this point "until the cows come home", but we'll probably never change anyone's opinions.

Thanks Jerry-
I too have noticed strong opinions on both sides of the digi mode “debate” and I’ve yet to see someone change their mind because of anything I’ve said, so though I feel strongly about JT/FT modes (I’m a fan), I keep it to myself. Just get on the air!

I have microphones I haven't used in + 20 years, but I like my bencher paddles.  It still doen't make me a better or worse operator than the next guy.
