Welcome aboard guys! Hope to see you in the 31 Flavors contest. For me, 070 “contests” are casual, laid back events and a chance to give the rig work out.

I had a QSO from a China station the other day and I was sure it was a local
pirate fooling around. It happened during a period when eQSL was down, so it
hadn't been logged there. A few days later I had an eQSL from a Chinese
station and it matched what I had logged. Boy, that was a pleasant surprise!
My first ever contact in China.

Re: 31 Flavors Sprint – FLDIGI

B. Smith, N3XL

Thanks for the tip on RSID. This is my first attempt to use RSID. I’ll be using FLDIGI macros. Below is what I have, so far. If any of you FLDIGI pros see problems, let me know.  I’m hoping that <RXRSID:on|off|t> will toggle the RSID off during the QSO. There isn’t anything I have seen in the documentation describing this. I plan to move the dial up in freq when shifting to wider modes, as suggested.

Search and Pounce

Answering a CQ:               <TX><RXRSID:on|off|t><CALL> de <MYCALL> <MYCALL> <MYCALL> K<RX>

Logging:                               <LOG><CNTR><INCR><RXRSID:on>

Run

Calling CQ:                          <TX><GOHOME><!MODEM:XXXXXX><NRSID:5><IDLE:5>CQ 31 Flavors de <MYCALL> <MYCALL> <MYCALL> pse k<RX>

Logging:                               <TX><CALL> RRR TU de N3XL<LOG><INCR> QRZ?

Using the RSID is a great  idea.  Just make sure if you make a contact to turn the RXID off during the contact because if another RSID is received while you're in the contact your rig might switch to a different mode and you'll loose the contact..

Probably going to sit this one out as my software only has BPSK31 & QPSK31.   I may hunt around for some new 070 numbers, but no real effort.

Had tried to get HRD running, but seems to be something wrong with spare Tigertronics USB. Been playing with it for a few days with no success. Took Tigertronics apart and and it has odor of burning carbon. Think it was one I bought used from Ebay.

Re: 31 Flavors Sprint – Heads Up !

For 31 Flavors, there are lots of good suggestions embedded in the contest rules.

One statement that " It may be useful to call CQ in BPSK 31, indicating which mode variant will follow..." might be amplified with the following additional statement:

"If your software supports RSID (Reed Soloman Identifier), you might want to ensure that is enabled for this sprint.  To identify the mode being transmitted the RSID can be transmitted before (and after) the data. Using this identifier the receiving software can automatically switch to the proper mode for decoding. The assigning of these identifiers to new modes is coordinated to ensure inter-operation between programs.  At least seven sound card-digital-modem programs support this standard.

  • PocketDigi
  • FDMDV
  • DM780
  • Multipsk
  • Fldigi
  • AndFlmsg
  • TIVAR

RSID operates by sending a short burst of a specific modulation before the data signal, which can be used to automatically identify over 272 digital modes. This burst consists of a 10.766 baud 16-tone MFSK modulation where 15 tones/symbols are sent. The burst occupies 172 Hz of bandwidth and lasts for 1.4 seconds.

Enabling RSID might save you manually cycling through various modes guessing which one is in use!  Some programs, like Fldigi, allow you to select which modes you would like to transmit RSID for.  This allow you to inhibit RSID on BPSK-31 (which is pretty obvious on the waterfall) but enable it on other modes (such as BPSK-63) if desired."

Just a suggestion to make life easier.

Jim - I have checked via some 10-10 folks that live out that way but none close enough or know anyone in that area.  I also checked several funeral homes in that area but as you said it may be too soon as most of the obituaries show only up to Mar 30 and some not even that far. So maybe tomorrow.  I actually sent a reply back to the sender of that message to see if I get a reply.  Hope it wasn’t phising stuff!!

I have no proof, but I'm guessing that someone in Larry's family is replying to incoming emails on his email account with the bad news.

I've done some searching, but there's nothing that new in the local newspaper obituaries, and the only funeral home I found with an online presence doesn't list him. It's probably too soon for all that.
